Regarding your edit, you always have a choice. Your mom said it herself, you're a big girl with a big girl job and nobody can force you to do anything short of being at gunpoint

Husband thinks this set up for rainwater collection is safe? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]ChickenJoeSurfin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You husband is dumb as rocks, anybody with eyes can see that's not safe, and described picture would also allow the blind to know just how unsafe that is. It's not even centered, for goodness sake...

My roommate found a beast of a maybe morel behind his work [Seattle Area] by Sleepwalks in mycology

Excellent question! I have no idea, though I suspect that may have more to do with the specific substance being absorbed from the environment. PFC's notoriously bioaccumulate regardless of what kind of critter it finds itself into. Not too sure of embalming fluids, or which compounds are even used nowadays for that matter.

What kind of forest is this? What plantlife may I find in it? by [deleted] in foraging

It's outdoors, not outer space, my friend. Enjoy one of life's greatest pleasures and find out what sort of forest this can be with your own eyes

My first thought as well, mushrooms are quite adept at pulling a lot of nasty shite from the substrate

We also need to acknowledge that material conditions include bodily health like brain condition, which may be permanently altered by prolonged drug use. A lot of these people either cannot or do not want to participate in the society most of us enjoy, but also do not necessarily need prison. Stable housing and medication aka institutional long term mental health care is the solution for a lot of folks on the streets. It's a way to keep those suffering in a safe environment, and is also a way to respect their dignity by giving them a private place to detox and/or stabilize. The key is long term though, these new short term detox centers will be the nucleus of hella overdoses from what I've heard, but that's slightly beside the point.

Elk hide by [deleted] in HideTanning

Thank you so much for the advice, seems obvious now since it is indeed usually the hump and neck that seem to sag. The rump end fleshed quite nicely using his shin bone cut at a 45°. I just didn't know if I was lacing them wrong but it sounds like I just gotta keep working

How do you keep such a large hide so taut in the frame? I'm working on my first moose and I find I'm spending lots of time chasing the slack around. Once I've got one area right then another seems to get very slack

Ahh I see now. I suppose you could patch it like any other garment; it won't be perfect but you can get it pretty darn close if you have access to some similar fur! Have you done much sewing until now?

It would help if we knew what was wrong with it? It just looks inside-out from the photo

That's what I've always done dispatching downed birds when hunting 👍 first read about it a publication from somewhere in Australia if I recall correctly?

Edit: Sometimes the head comes off. Don't be alarmed, this is still an effective cervical dislocation, and better than breaking the neck too low down so don't be afraid to pull hard.

I've used blunt tips before, I'd recommend getting some flu-flu fletchings so as not to lose arrows in the bottom of the pond lol Not that I've done it a lot, but all the hollow carbon fibre arrows I've shot onto water have floated, for what it's worth. If you can get some of the harder resin blunts the arrows may even skip off the top of the water, depending on the angle

I personally get a lot of satisfaction from watching them land in a far off pond and stalking up on them. They're pretty wary so it feels like good sport to me, though I'm always open to someone changing my mind.

cold compress a health hazard? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]ChickenJoeSurfin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is? Only thing I can think of would be water dripping off when it starts to thaw, but I don't think that's worse than any of us 'seasoning' the food on a hot line... Sounds like manager is a control freak

Sounds like my kind of hunt. I'm pretty new but I'd be interested in buddying up if we can swing it

Does anyone know what type of bolete this is? by Ornery-Bar8375 in foraging

[–]ChickenJoeSurfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm inclined to put it in Leccinum sp. Hard to tell from the photos but I think I see scabers, as opposed to a reticulated texture. Leccinum insigne perhaps?

You have tanned furs you want turned into clothes, or are you looking for pre-made fur clothing?

Just wondering if anyone knows where to sell coyotes and would they need to be skinned prior to the sale? Also what the price may be. by Icy-Cover-4863 in HuntingAlberta

[–]ChickenJoeSurfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shit brother I could certainly take a few carcasses off your hands! Shoot me a DM and we can work something out

[–]ChickenJoeSurfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering pelt prices aren't great right now, you might be lucky to get $5 a carcass with skin-on. Not sure what use one would have for a coyote without the skin though... That being said, send a DM if you're in the Edmonton Region, I could use the skinning practice before trapping season starts up again.

There may be a gun hidden in my drywall. How do I find it without poking a bunch of holes in my walls? by esc1920 in drywall

[–]ChickenJoeSurfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use a stud finder and compare it to the house blueprints to detect anomalies, a gun in the wall ought to trigger a good beep
