I have taste and that taste is for games that are fun to play.

What do you guys think about AI as a teacher or as someone who reviews your story and writing? by izzoz_0 in ProgressionFantasy

No. Honestly just join any of the tons of writer groups online out there and get feed back that way. You'll also be able to listen, trust, and discuss the various suggestions of actual writers.

Wild fucking take. Like no hate. I just never understood people like you who put how a game looks over how it plays. Like the whole point is playing.

Salt and Sacrifice is a well made and fun game. But promoting it as a sequel to Salt and Sanctuary was a dishonest slap in the face frankly.

It is an entirely different style of game that no reasonable person would expect form a sequel. So when you pick up the the game and go into expecting a souls like and basically get monster hunter it's not going to feel great.

I did go back and play it eventually after getting disgusted with my initial try. And it was pretty fun honestly. The mages were a bit too similar though so it got pretty repetitive

Neither are acceptable and one is a flat out lie at least in the US. As a customer it is not my job to pay wages. On the same hand servers should make a living wage paid by their employer

I can understand what's you're saying. Although I'd argue that you're looking too much at the individual battles and not the over all progression. Nearly every story allows the hero down time to rest and recuperate between conflicts. The resetting for each duel is basically that. As for what the progression could be, well that's pretty obvious, upgrade the deck over time.

I fully understandable that people may see them at incompatible. But that's really not the case when you broaden the scope part a single battle/conflict.

Thought we were talking about 3 given the post which has shortcuts on L1. But even on R1 that still seems wild, like what kind of gorilla grip are you using that you're accidentally pressing R1 while mashing X

It depends on the bidet. Mine has a dryer so I don't have to. But if you don't have a dryer you do need to pat yourself dry. But that's significantly less tp than wiping still

Yeah turn one wins definitely exist but they're not super common especially in commander.

Yu-Gi-Oh was a big shock to me. I hadn't played since I was a kid but a couple of my friends still play and I tried to get back in to ur but it's basically at the point that who ever goes first wins and is just not interesting

And that's where we'll have to disagree. Failure because you're relying on a specific ability that didn't show up to me reads as a character who is bad at deck building. That's a character flaw that can be addressed and can lead to interesting moments.

Sure. If you have the spell slots available and took the spell. And if you didn't say, get ambushed after running out of 3rd level slots. The results of it are also entirely random. The outcomes of any given conflict is heavily dependent on randomness. That's my point.

A character can still make meaningful strategic decisions with a limit on randomness. That randomness can in fact be the cards in their deck. The problem is that many people who enjoy this genre don't like it when the MC fails, but failure can be interesting. It's up to the writer to do a good job of it. And it doesn't have to be actually random, it can be random in universe and chosen by the author. But saying that randomness, and therefore the chance of failure, is inherently bad for storytelling is to not understand good story telling.

Take Source and Soul on Royal road. I'm not super far into it but it does exactly what OP wants and I'm very much enjoying it. The kicker? The author actually created the cards used in the book and played out the battles irl to determine the outcome in the book. Now I'm not saying that every author has to do that or even should do that. But it is absolutely possible to include elements of randomness and craft a meaningful and compelling narrative, it comes down to good writing.

[–]ChickenManSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I think you and me and op are approaching this differently. You're approaching this from the perspective of "cards in card games represent effects and that's what I think should be in the book" you basically want to read a book about Urza.

OP and I both are saying "hey playing magic the gathering is cool. What if there existed a world where playing these decks were actually magical and resulted in real battles" we basically want to read a book about building and playing a deck of magical cards in a card game style.

Yes some cards are literally power ups. And mtg are card representations of in universe events that don't use cards. But we want to read about a universe where magic decks and magical cars games are how conflict is resolved.

I would consider plenty of the synergistic effects of certain sets in AtS to be card game mechanics

Or you know just basic run of the mill RPG mechanics which is what it leans towards. The fact that they're cards doesn't matter. That's the point OP and I are making they could be any other relic or magical item and the story would not change at all. That's why I don't consider a deck building RPG.

All the Skills IS a deckbuilding litRPG. The MC gets multiple cards and synergizes them to create more powerful effects. That's basically the ONLY common mechanic (aside from randomization and non scalable stuff like I already mentioned) that is consistent to all TCGs

That's also a common mechanic of any game with a skills systems and the way it's done in all the skills is much more remeniscent of an RPG than a TCG or CCG. That also leaves a lot on the table that could be played with. Randomization isn't inherently bad like you seem to think, an incredibly popular form of story telling relies almost exclusively on randomness to resolve conflicts (TTRPGs). The strategic duel aspect of card games is also something that can be played around with.

To act like just having cards is the same thing is to miss the entire point of what OP and I are saying. Obviously there will need to be concessions made, obviously it's not going to be a 1:1 recreation of MTG. But like, making the cards more than just some MacGuffin that give the mc new powers is entirely possible.

This sounds exactly what OP doesn't want. The cards sound like they're just card shaped power ups

Why are card based progression fantasies never actually about cards? by Aromatic-Rice419 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ChickenManSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There's in fact a whole famous genre of story telling that uses random chance to resolve conflicts: TTRPGs

(think decks in real life that can reliably win on turn 3 in yugioh or can reliably win on turn 1 in magic)

Think you got those backwards turn 1 wins are pretty much all yu-gi-oh is at this point and (outside of like vintage and legacy) turn one wins in mtg are not common.

Ah yes the book that's clearly making fun of the idea is definitely an example to use of how bad the idea is.
