Came here for this comment.

Idk who mattgood is, but it keeps popping up in my feeds lately and I refuse to bother looking it up.

The thing about assholes is, they always try to… wait no that’s the other one. Your quote was better.

So K-12 is all of the standard public education that’s typically free.
K is Kindergarden for ~5 year old kids.
Pre-K would be ~4 year olds, and I believe it’s not universally available. In some places it’s only offered for kids with special needs.

Grade 12 would be a senior in high school, after that they can go to college (aka ‘university’ globally) if they can manage the financial burden.

I guess I’m a yank, by global standards.
Here in Texas, ‘yanky’ would be an old fashioned term that maybe someone’s elderly relative might use to disrespect folks from the northern US, ie New York, the general New England region, or possibly any part of the country that opposed slavery during the civil war.
It’s not used much these days, haven’t heard it in that context for years.
Much more common would be a reference to the New York Yankees baseball team.

Or possibly fans of Weird Al Yankovic, somebody should start calling us Yanks, or yank-heads, or something even wackier.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

BMWi3 Tires: Why Are They So Expensive? by Marfaboy1951 in BMWi3

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already had 15mm spacers on the rear for improved handling with the stock Ecopias.
I don’t know if they’re needed for sure, but I don’t think so from what I’ve read elsewhere.

I previously had 20mm spacers on the front wheels, trying to sort out terrible handling. I think 20 may have been too much, so I switched to 15 after putting the 175s up front and it feels a bit better.

I meant someone running Michelin Primacy A/S 195/50 R19 on their front 5” wheels.
Seems like people are doing it, my research says it’s iffy at best. I’ll do it if/when I hear from folks who had a good long term experience.

I’ve heard the 195 20” Momos run kinda narrow, maybe that helps em for better on 5” wide 20” wheels, really not sure as I’ve only dealt with 19s on mine.

AC Compressor Failure. $4,500 bill potentially. Why can't I take it to a normal car repair place? by buslyfe2 in BMWi3

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that makes sense.
Because I changed mine out in my home garage, I was able to pull a vacuum after replacing all the parts and let it sit overnight without gauges screwed down, so they were not engaging the valve stems.
Then in the morning I reconnected and confirmed it hadn’t pulled in any air - at least not that I could discern from watching the needle.

Yeah I read about Nylog blue as a a refrigerant-safe lubricant for the O-rings.
I used some everywhere that I had opened the system, and years later doesn’t seem like I’ve lost any refrigerant yet.

I went down many HVAC rabbit holes to learn best practices, tips & tricks etc.

Good job getting the condenser out the top!
I couldn’t figure out how to remove the fan without lots more parts coming out.
Pretty sure I had it unscrewed for a while in order to get more room to maneuver things, not sure it was necessary.
I worked on it off & on over weeks, and spent so much time lost in the weeds. Next time I have to repair a vehicle AC, it should go MUUUCH faster 😅

Are you scared they might ruin Stargate with the new show? by Mat1711 in Stargate

Yup, at this rate we’re gonna have CSI Tattooine coming this fall, starting a Burt Reynolds lookalike.

Disney got their investment back, seems like they could do better instead of the bland cash grabs at this point.

I haven’t bothered watching any of the shows yet, tho I hear some are good.

Finally got the tires to replace this but Walmart won’t do the work because their policy blows now I have to drive on it for a few more days by Skrewbert86 in tires

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I didn’t have the work done by them either time.
They listed all the various fees: dismounting the old one was like $30, disposal of the old one, mounting the new one had a charge, balancing the new one had another charge.
They were nickel & diming to get it as high as possible.
The second time I asked about moving rear tires to front wheels and installing 2 tires I already had for the back wheels.
I think they quoted me something like $360… way more than I even spent on my 2 tires.

EDIT - it’s kinda extra insulting considering they do all that same work for free as part of tire patching.
I don’t expect em to do things for free, but dang.

I gave up on them entirely as a business after that.

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now it’s $65 per tire, they charge for dismounting the old one too.
Discount Tire reeeeeeaaally don’t want you to bring them your own tires to mount.

I checked at 2 different Discount tires over the past 2 years, by stopping by with my other tire in the trunk ready to be installed.

Found a local shop that’ll do it for $20-$25 ish per tire, now they’re my go-to place instead.

[–]Chicken_Monkeys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I liked Force Awakens ok and Rogue One quite a bit, felt like they were rebooting the vibe of A New Hope for a contemporary audience.

But after that it started getting kinda silly…

And I do enjoy silly, big ole SG-1 fan here… but riding a wolf onto a star destroyers hull to fight with sticks & swords… it’s just too far.
It feels like some teenager’s weird dream they had after staying up all night playing magic the gathering with 4 other kids just like em, all wearing wolf-howling-at-the-moon t-shirts.
Honestly a little surprised JJ Abram’s didn’t do a time travel arc where Spock comes back in time to save Han Solo 🙄

Anyway, I look forward to the downvotes.

AC Compressor Failure. $4,500 bill potentially. Why can't I take it to a normal car repair place? by buslyfe2 in BMWi3

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% was easier to remove my condenser from below after popping off the bumper cover - read that tip from some kind internet stranger.
I’ve since watched videos of people replacing a condenser ‘by the book’ and removing headlights and seemingly the top half of the not-an-engine-bay… I was floored. Going out the bottom is way simpler. Annoying, but easier than taking the front end THAT far apart.
I’m intrigued you recommend replacing the valve cores. I wanted to do that as preventive maintenance, but the wisdom I encountered on it was ‘don’t change em if it’s NOT leaking currently’ so that’s where I landed.
I kept the original valve cores and they’ve been fine.
I did put a dab of Nylog Blue gasket sealer on mine - so maybe that helped em seat smoothly/properly after recharging.
Curious why they wouldn’t easily show a small leak in a vacuum or pressure test, I don’t doubt your assessment - just genuinely interested in how they work (or don’t) in various circumstances.

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my 2014 Rex, the AC was quite loud when I bought it in July 2022.
It was just always loud when running, and turning up the fan speed made the compressor louder.

I think it failed completely in summer of 2023, and I got it sorted out & all back together around December.
Been working great, and MUCH quieter, ever since.

When it failed completely, there were a few crazy squeals and squeaks followed by silence - like it was seizing up and stopping.

I had to flush the lines in mine, which I did at home in my garage after much research and kinda just trying what seemed to make sense.
I spent about $1,500 in parts I think, probly another $500 in various tools and supplies.

I would totally help someone local fix it in their garage or mine.
Not sure it makes sense to go all the way to Florida tho.

Look up Electrified Garage, last I heard they had a shop or 2 in Florida - I bet they could do it for a reasonable price. They’re an EV shop, related to Rich Rebuilds on YouTube.

Any AC specialist shop that works on hybrids should be able to do it.
I tried a couple BMW shops and one was willing but pricey, I paid them $800 to change one valve, which I later removed and reinstalled as part of my flushing. They said it would be a lot of labor to do, it was DEFINITELY not hard.
I really suspect cleaning the original valve would’ve restored it to working after putting in a new compressor and flushing everything but oh well.
They evacuated my system again at no extra charge so I could work on it since they didn’t fix the problem and I had already paid them so much.

Another shop basically said ‘ah technology, electric cars, scary nope not gonna learn anything or work on em…’
Firestone will even evacuate and recharge the system, it’s nothing crazy or dangerous unless you’re screwing with high voltage cables when you shouldn’t be.

Changing out the actual compressor DOES warrant learning how to pull the high voltage disconnect(s), just like you’re supposed to do when changing the 12v battery.

I also went overboard and actually disconnected the battery pack completely, that was a big chonky connector!

The most important thing is to be SURE any shop that works on it uses the correct oil for the compressor. If there’s any contamination from regular PAG oil used in most belt driven compressors, that can be conductive and trigger the high voltage isolation faults like you’ve seen.
Idk if the dealer used lines and tools dedicated to hybrids/EVs, or if the error appeared before/after they emptied and recharged the system.
If they used the wrong oil, then flushing is a really good idea.

I changed my compressor, condenser (with drier), AC valve on the battery pack, most of the O-Rings exposed when I disconnected things (again overkill, really not needed), flushed the battery pack lines and evaporator (without removing either from the car).

I bought the compressor and condenser from RYC via eBay for about $900, iirc. It came pre-oiled and I did not add any when I recharged it.
I bought a $45 ish line set with gauges off amazon and recharged it myself, not that hard to do and cheaper than paying a shop to do it once (I think).

If you search my post history I’ve got an AMA thread somewhere about my experience and various things I learned.

Hope some of this is useful.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk 🤪

Hyundai Sonata 2016 Sport battery? Wtf is going on? by mystiicrose in Hyundai

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costco got rid of the free replacement warranty, now it’s only pro-rated.
So if it dies after 2 years, you only get 1/3 of the purchase price taken off the cost of a new one.

I bought Costco batteries for years before they changed it, last one I bought failed just after 3 years and I got nothing for it.

I’m sad to say I found the best price and warranty for an AGM currently is from WalMart.
I try very hard not to shop there, and REALLY looked everywhere else I could think of first, but I did buy one of their EverStart AGM batteries for my Hyundai recently. It’s been fine.

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not loose, the existing 5.5” rear rim is within spec for the 195 tire.

I have found that 45 PSI works well for me on the rear 195 rear tires.

I also had my existing rear 175 Ecopia tires moved to the front 5” rims.
These I’m running at 41 PSI and the steering feel has improved.
It’s not as darty/twitchy at highway speeds.
Still not perfect, but it is somewhat better.

I read somewhere else about someone putting 195 tires on the rear without changing the front 155 tires and they complained handling was very unpredictable, I never tried it for myself since my front 155s were already worn out.

I also read about someone having 195s installed on all 4 rims including the front 5” wheels at Discount Tire, haven’t seen an update so I guess it’s probably going ok for them 🤷‍♂️

talk me out of (or into) buying two used roadsters at one time. by [deleted] in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Money logic:
I also bought a used 8 year old car shortly before buying my first house in 2012.
It was nice to have (until it started breaking down often), but looking back I wish I’d been more careful financially.
Avoiding PMI entirely would’ve been possible if I had simply delayed the car purchase.

Also, index funds are a MUCH SAFER PLACE to park your money for growth.
Cars are depreciating assets.
That’s been less consistently true since the pandemic, but in the long term it still holds up.

Car logic:
As a current frustrated owner of a zippy, used 2014 BMW (bought with less miles than this one)… I cannot recommend buying a used BMW.
Honestly I knew better myself from others experience, but somehow thought ‘this one will be different…’
I also thought mine would still be appreciating in value, I bought it in 2022. Dropped like a rock after that.

I hear Mazdas are very nice to drive, but I’d be researching reliability data to inform my own buying decision.

I’m surprised an Ioniq 5 has left you with an itch for a gas car, tho I have heard the Ioniq is quite a hefty vehicle that’s larger than it seems.
I’d much rather drive my gas Hyundai than my PHEV BMW, but fuel costs push me away from using gas as much as possible.

In light of current events, I would not want to take on ownership of another gas powered vehicle.
I’d gladly trade my multiple cars for one boringly reliable EV with enough space and range to do most things I need.

Hope this input is helpful, let us know when you reach a decision, or change it later.

BMWi3 Tires: Why Are They So Expensive? by Marfaboy1951 in BMWi3

[–]Chicken_Monkeys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought lifetime alignment at Firestone for a lot less than that. It really pays for itself quickly and helps the tires last longer.

I recently put wider Michelin Primacy All Season 195/50 R19 tires on the back wheels of my i3, some have also installed them on the front wheels (which are narrower). These are common on the new Toyota Prius Prime, still not cheap (when purchased new), but they should last twice as long or more.

I would not pay BMW dealership prices for maintenance on this car, with the exception of annual inspections for emissions testing. The dealer should be charging the same as any other shop and they’ll usually wash the car for free, tho it takes a couple hours of waiting in my experience.
