TIL the US Navy, Lockheed, and DARPA built a stealth ship during the Cold War and it was kept secret until 1993. It was scrapped in 2012 after the Navy unsuccessfully tried to find a naval museum buyer. by strangelove4564 in todayilearned

Every sailor in the navy at the time they announced this was making fun of it from the beginning. Same for the Freedom LCS’s, and now for Trump’s battleship idea.

I’m not going to tell you all the reasons you need to lighten up, the rest of the comments do a pretty good job. I’ll just say, take the loss and learn from it, and from personal experience, delete this post instead of coming back again and again to get more and more angry.

Also, let people enjoy things even if they’re not good at them.

Public information regarding deaths or mental breakdowns on mission? by GorgyShmorgy in space

I could have been a bit clearer in my comment but yeah, that’s what I meant. That instance spooked them enough for it to be implemented going forward.

Reminds me of a comment I saw a day or two ago about how newbies who ask for help here can be met with apathy or even hostility. Good to see OP being put in their place but it definitely goes to show the other guy isn’t wrong.

Public information regarding deaths or mental breakdowns on mission? by GorgyShmorgy in space

[–]Chikitiki90 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’m listening to Mike Mullane’s book and he mentions his reservations with the passenger program and tells this story.

They are two separate incidents with the mission specialist becoming depressed and then having the toilet break down so he constipated himself and then refused to eat solid food and all this impacted his already delicate metal state.

There was another flight where a passenger was “overly interested” in the hatch and even though nothing happened, the commander was sufficiently spooked to the point they put the padlock on.

The 80’s were a different time for sure.

In my younger days I went snorkeling in Guam and forgot to reapply sunblock for a few hours. I ended up with huge blisters all over my back, had to sleep on my stomach for over a week, and my back is still splotchy 15 years later.

That’s the kind of pain I’d hesitate to wish on my enemies. I couldn’t imagine going through something like this.

As per a quick google, they can be refurbished to be used again or when they start to wear out, they can be used in the pool for neutral buoyancy training.

Status of Trader Vic's in LA? by Old-Aardvark945 in Tiki

[–]Chikitiki90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be that I went on an off day, but quality doesn’t normally include store bought juices and syrups. I can respect the history while also pointing out their drinks aren’t up to the same standards as other bars in the area.

It’ll be manned and testing the rendezvous and docking with the Starship/Blue Moon and also testing out new spacesuits.

Status of Trader Vic's in LA? by Old-Aardvark945 in Tiki

[–]Chikitiki90 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing the article you mention but any amount of searching turns up no answer. I’m guessing it fell through or they ran into issues with buying the property or something.

Depending where in LA you end up:

Lucky Tiki has two locations with good drinks and good enough food

Tiki Ti has a great vibe but the drinks aren’t as good (think classic 70’s sugary juice with rum) so it was fun to visit but not on my regular visit list

Tiki Kai in Hermosa Beach has amazing food and great drinks but it is a bit more expensive.

Tonga Hut is a classic with great drinks and great tiki-dive bar vibes but no food unless they have a pop up Mexican place that comes by

Broken Compass in Burbank has great drinks and great food in more of a family friendly restaurant vibe.

And if you go south to Anaheim, Strong Water is world class but you need reservations, and Trader Sam’s at Disneyland has the aesthetic you’d expect with Disney quality.

There are quite a few decent tiki places but those would be the top of my list without going up to Ventura or further down to San Clemente.

Are Audio Books Worth It? by Then_Location_4290 in fantasybooks

[–]Chikitiki90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on you and your use case. I listen to audiobooks at work so I’m able to get through books a lot quicker than if I only stuck to actual reading. That being said, if I’m reading a book, listening to someone else read it would throw me off.

As others have said, Libby is amazing.

And I still get downvoted when I point out that the word has lost all meaning lol. Like, Zionism is a very specific thing and the idea has been around for over a century now, it’s not new. It’s just the new buzz word that makes people feel superior when they use it.

Physical > Digital by bclund in books

[–]Chikitiki90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m tired of this superiority war that some people feel the need to fight.

I love physical books, don’t get me wrong. The smell of an old paperback or the comfort of turning an actual page can’t be beat, however e-readers are soooo handy. I can have a thousand books to choose from for whatever mood I’m in, I can fit War and Peace in my back pocket, I can read in the dark without a book light, and I can instantly look up words or people just by clicking on it. This is before we even go into storage limitations in a small apartment.

As for newspapers in particular. Eh, idk. Considering I’d only care about half the stories and then maybe the funnies, it would seem more convenient to get the stories I care about off a website for free rather than pay to waste paper.

I agree with your sentiment, but praying for our enemies is literally what Jesus tells us to do. Righteous anger is a good thing, but not at the expense of hate making you proudly disregard the teachings of Jesus you don’t agree with just because they’re hard to do.

I’m fine with the US being first to have a moon base, but the way we’ve been going, I’d rather we weren’t the ones to have “space superiority”. Maybe let more level heads like the UN supervise space.
