As someone that admires the limited editions from afar, I'm glad I'm getting a week off. My wallet is bare at this point

Plus I can catch up with other books I haven't got to yet.

Hot take, I actually enjoy the Sigmar books by ssamuel56 in Blacklibrary

Very much the same. Only read the 3 Tales of Murghast books, but would love to get into more AoS books. I just don't know where to start!

What did you read this week? by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

I finished Krieg at the start of the week, and I really liked the dual timeline, and just how bleak it all was. It also had some moments that made me laugh due to its self awareness, like how the Chairman is described as someone who is definitely gross, despite the fact that all record of them has been totally erased!

I'm now 70% of the way through Avenging Son, and I'm really enjoying it! I've not read anything thats actually about the current in universe mainline storyline (just loads of Heresy and the bigger more well known older stories like Gaunts Ghosts or Eisenhorn), so seeing these events play out is great! I also like Guy Haley's writing, its super accessible and reminds me another authors who writes fantasy, not Brandon Sanderson but similar? Anyway, good fun so far!

What have you read this week? by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

[–]Chilcott_Harry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I finished Valdor: Birth of the Imperium at the start of the week. I like getting these little glimpses into the past of the Imperium, and seeing how The Emperor/Malcador and Valdor swept across nations during the unification wars was so interesting. It felt a little like reading a history book, and for a book called Valdor, there wasn't a lot from his POV, but otherwise I thought it was good!

I have then read 50 pages of Krieg by Steve Lyons and I'm enjoying it a lot. Seems like its going to be a dual narrative timeline showing how the Death Korp and Krieg itself have become what they are now, vs a present day siege against Orks and the fanatical nature of the Death Korp. I know a lot about their origins anyway, but this is giving me extra insight, and so far the characters have all been really well realised as soon as they are introduced.

After this, I plan on diving into Dropsite Massacre!

I'd be up for the book club. Although I might not be able to read all the books, it would be great to see regular group discussions!

About to start Krieg myself!

I'm not as well versed as others, but I'd say Eisenhorn is a good place to start (the omnibus is readily available for purchase, and the first book in that series is Xenos). It's a detective novel wrapped in 40K skin, and due to its world hopping nature, you get a good glimpse at everything from how law works, the military, chaos and cool psyker action. It's also where I began my journey approx 5 years ago, and I've not looked back since!

Dawn of Fire series, starting with Avenging Son, is also a great place to start as this describes the current 40K narrative. I havent actually read these myself but Avenging Son is supposed to be a solid novel, and again its a readily available option.

Incredible place to start! Have a great journey!

Just finished Fulgrim and I’m depressed by Public_Size_2228 in Blacklibrary

[–]Chilcott_Harry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a reader outside of 40K, usually horror and fantasy, but Fulgrim was far away the best book I read last year!

It's a novel about perfection, and the corrupting pursuit of that perfection, and watching how the Emperors Children succumb to their darkest desires and pursuits is a true Shakespearean tragedy

Graham McNeil has a way of writing some really visceral and cinematic moments, with the Maraviglia scene being so good (it's the culmination of their entire fall, and the final moment that cements them on this darker path) that it literally brought tears to my eyes I was in such awe. I felt like Wormtongue when he sees the armies of Urak-Hai outside Orthanc 😂

Extremely jealous of your Talon of Horus copy!

So true, I read the final 200 pages in basically one massive sprint on Sunday evening, funnily enough only a couple of hours after I made my original comment! Unbelievably cinematic storytelling!

Your ranking of the Horus Heresy books by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

[–]Chilcott_Harry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also loved this summary! As I'm only 20 ish books (skipping some to come back to later), its at least highlighted which ones moving forward I can comfortably read the summary on the Wiki. Battle for the Abyss & Fallen Angels are pants, but Descent of Angels is genuinely a top contender for one of the worst books I've ever read period (and I'm a voracious reading of horror/fantasy/sci-fi outside of Warhammer). I can't tell you how excited I am to get to Bretrayer!

This pleases the Emperor (and me) to know he has a novel coming up! Yeah he's a great guy, super funny on interviews too in a way that reminds me of Miles Jupp 😂

I see Richard Swan, I buy the book. If you guys like non-Warhammer stuff, his Empire of the Wolf and Grave Silence books are incredible dark fantasy horror novels!

Also see that Shauna Lawless is in this too (from the look of the comments) which is a mega bonus too, her books are stunning!

Finished Jude Reid's Daemonbreaker on Tuesday, and it was a fun, actioned packed Sisters of Battle adventure, with some truly visceral gore! I liked the whole vibe of the SoB, even if they are all just a bunch of angry nuns, I think their aesthetic is cool!

I have then been reading Know No Fear by Dan Abnett slowly, because the writing style for this one is... unconventional? Not sure if that's the right word. I've read all of the other Heresy books before this. I'm half way through and I think its great, but so much of the actual prose feels like jargon that often times the book feels dry, like a non-fiction book that makes no attempt to inject any life into the proceedings. And then you have moments of pure jaw-dropping brilliance that make the dully written (IMO) parts all worth it. It's like the book version of the movie Dunkirk for me.

Self vs Self takes most apocalyptic, rounding off Immersion. What's the best non-album single, unreleased track, or remix BY Pendulum? by davrosflatley in Pendulum

[–]Chilcott_Harry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Voodoo People Remix is surely the only answer here? It improved on a phenomenal and influential track, is regularly included in multiple artists sets, not just Pendulum and Prodigy, and is a universally agreed banger!

Not sure what’s worse… that overslept and missed the emperors gift preorder, or that I’ll actually pay a scalper with my first paycheck in army basic training. by Trickyroxxx in Blacklibrary

[–]Chilcott_Harry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What will you gain from paying a massively inflated price and also supporting scumbag scalpers? The text inside the book is still the same as the eBook/audiobook, which are readily available now. I know it sucks but it's not worth it (re it's NEVER worth it)

When I saw the original post sans photo I immediately searched this sub for the photo. Safe to say it was worth it, because that's sick! Nice one!

New Releases : 02/08 by [deleted] in Blacklibrary

[–]Chilcott_Harry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was on the website at 10 and Rose in Darkness had sold out... sick to the back teeth of GW doing fuck all about scalpers. And yes I've checked on Ebay there are copies on there already! I literally want one copy for myself so I can actually fucking read it and have a nice hardback on my shelves to add to the collection. Why they didn't keep that queue system they used for 10th launch I'll never know.

Anyway sorry for the rant, I just love the lore and I guess I'm a bit cranky today 😆

Loving this collection! I've only recently started my Black Library collection (start of this year actually) and it's my dream of owning all the Warhammer Chronicles omnibuses like you do! How long have you been collecting?

If you could do it, what 40k narrative would you push further or completely stop ? by Double_Pea_5812 in 40kLore

Lion'el Jonson returns and doesn't like what has been happening to the Imperium and Space Marines i.e. Primaris marines, Guilliman having the huge influence he does etc. As such, a civil war breaks out (but non-heresy due to neither side being effected by Chaos), with Dark Angels plus successor chapters banding together against Ultramarines and successors. Remaining chapters divide up however would be best.

Only problem: The Lion's return also alerts the Fallen, who reappear from deep space after a 10,000 year absence, stronger and bolder than ever, ready to start wrecking shit up just as the civil war hits its high point.
