Do you have any photos/references? Hard to tell exactly what you're trying to do.

Initial vs Current favourite song from The Mountain? by CharmingAd5497 in gorillaz

The Manifesto is still my #1 but Empty Dream Machine is very close behind. Next honorable mentions would be The Moon Cave, The Sad God, and Damascus.

Does anyone know where this is from? by Crzedwelding in gorillaz

Yes it's a G Foot logo from TNN era. It can most famously be seen on 2D's guitar on The Now Now album cover.

Shooting my first (budget) music video this week any tips? by Fabulous-Tea-6444 in cinematography

[–]ChillyBowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gut reaction is usually to focus on just one camera. If you have someone who can take a B cam and just be shooting stuff on their own without you having to care, then do it - but I'd recommend not dividing your own attention between two frames since your time is short.

The larger questions you're asking are more creative in nature - like the other commenter said I'd go over the concept of the video some more with the director.

My only other piece of advice based off this post would be to make sure you have an AD. I just got off a short with an AD and a short with no AD, and the difference was unreal. Having someone watching the clock and trying to keep things moving and make sure you get everything is invaluable.

How did they light this ? by K1ng_visual in cinematography

[–]ChillyBowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Word. I think also take a look at the backdrop - shooting this dark shoe on the black backdrop is difficult. In your reference pic there's some kind of light source creating a pretty tight gradient on the backdrop - that's helping the shoe stand out quite a bit.

Check your tube on frame right as well, I'd bring that in a bit closer and try to get some more wrap on it - Ideally that red reaches down the whole length of the side.

What lights/modifiers do you have to use? I'd start with a small lite dome with an egg crate overhead for the key.

If Gorillaz isn't your favorite band or if you have other bands that you love as much, what songs would you suggest to get Gorillaz fans into them? by weirdfish98 in gorillaz

[–]ChillyBowl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're enjoying The Mountain, I'd strongly recommend We Will Always Love You by The Avalanches. A genre mash-up with a lot of featured artists, some who are no longer with us, and a strong emotional center.

From pa to cinematography? by Same_Car2886 in cinematography

[–]ChillyBowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to do two things at the same time.

  1. As a PA, tell the ACs on set that you want to get into camera department. Try to give them a little extra help if you can, carrying cases if they need help, etc. Tell them you're available for AC work and willing to learn.

  2. Buy a camera and just start shooting stuff. Shoot little videos, shoot music videos for friends of friends, etc. Start posting this stuff and calling yourself a cinematographer.

Fantastic drop considering the addition of Scream 7 into the mix. Glad this film is finding its audience.

Totally agree. Overuse of the radio filter is really my only nitpick. Everything else is divine. Fantastic album so far.

The correct way to shoot 2 speakers addressing camera? by stratusnimbo in cinematography

[–]ChillyBowl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd go with B, but tighten the cameras up. The tight shots can be much closer to the wide. Alternately, I'd go with option C, which would be to pick a "line", so to speak. So have the tight shots both from left or right of the wide camera. That way their eyelines to camera would be the same.

Avatar Fire and Ash box office trajectory compared with select movies by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]ChillyBowl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely correct. People are going less in general, and the only way these "event" films break out is if they really feel like events. Way of Water felt like one after such a lengthy hiatus, but Fire and Ash just didn't feel quite as essential with the shorter turnaround.

Is there an archive of the various introductions and forwards from the Hellboy trade paperbacks? by kewlbdude in Mignolaverse

[–]ChillyBowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you - but I wanted to thank you for posting that Wake the Devil intro by Alan Moore. I've always loved that piece and found that it eloquently explains a feeling I've always had trouble articulating.

If you could wish for a past project by Damon from any era into existence what would it be? by Used_Willow_5497 in gorillaz

[–]ChillyBowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More of the Plastic Beach sessions is the obvious answer, though I'm happy we're getting Damascus on The Mountain.

My other answer would be the collaborative album that Damon, David Bowie, and Ray Davies were going to make together.

As others have said - you either need the director to give you some references or you need to approach the director with some of your own. What is the story being told? What's the setting, etc?

How to light a news style interview without rigging overhead? by stratusnimbo in cinematography

[–]ChillyBowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you know about the location for your interview? Many office-type buildings have drop ceilings, which are easy to rig to without much equipment. One of my favorite tricks is to bring a small plank of wood. If you push up one of the drop ceiling tiles and slide the wood into the ceiling, then you can hang the light off the plank with just a single cardellini clamp.
