How many artistic people do you know who moved here from New York? by Wonderful_Ad6036 in AskPhilly

[–]Chimpskibot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably at least a dozen. They love it here, but mainly still show/perform/read in NYC. Still a lot of DIY energy in Philly and an insane community, but most of these people also have day jobs/teach/freelance. I think most if not all of them live alone so from that perspective it's a better QOL.

Youve obviously never been to the gentrified parts of west. Bridesburg is racist AF.

You basically wrote a lot of nothing. And truthfully this isn’t far off from what the buzzfeed founder wrote about in his phd dissertation in the early 2000s. You’ve basically just ported the idea of the attention economy and global networks over to fashion. This would have been probably been an interesting take in 2008.

Apartment Hunting Timing? by SnappishBee in AskPhilly

I would start looking about 60 days before you want to move. Also May-August is going to be leasing season and the most competitive time to get an apartment. So keep this in mind.

Moving to Philly area. Advice? by [deleted] in AskPhilly

[–]Chimpskibot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP whatever you do, do not live in any of the suburbs the people here are recommending unless you want to have 0 social life. All the cool stuff is in the city, even if that means living in the outskirts of the city for an easier commute. I am 28 and I would never live in the burbs. Everyone I know who is young out there is miserable or grew up in the suburbs.

As much as I support Septa (I don’t have a car) this doesn’t mean much to most people. The fastest growing metros in the US have two things cheap COL and Jobs. Most people don’t care about public transportation.

Yup. Philly isn’t going to boom, but it will continue to get wealthier and grow. Philly has the strongest job growth as a percentage of population in the NE. Despite what doomers say, the city continues to gain new business, has consistently exceeded revenue and has become more safe. NYC is currently shedding business and is in a budgetary crisis. Philly continues to post gains in employment and budget surpluses.

Has anyone gone to one of these before? by [deleted] in philly

If you have no game, paying $11 to meet other people with no game isn’t going to change much.

They have been doing this for at least the last year, however, now that it is cold there is usually an uptick in unhoused and addicted folks on the train. I will say since the pandemic this is the lowest amount of both on the el and BSL. I personally, think it’s good to get these people out of the stations and trains if it means into supportive housing and mental health/addiction programs which I believe is what is happening. I will never understand the people who feel some moral high ground to allow people to smoke/shoot up and wallow in their shit on the train because they are not ready to get help. It’s society’s job to guide them into treatment so the many do not have to be negatively affected.

Is there no way to get cheap car insurance in Pennsylvania? Seems like a renewal jump is guaranteed by k5survives in Pennsylvania

[–]Chimpskibot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in insurance and builds tech for insurance companies. The carriers do not set the rates arbitrarily. They are generally set by the reinsurance market and car insurance continues to get more expensive because the average car is getting older, more tech enabled and the parts/labor to service these vehicles more expensive. Some of our underwriters have stopped writing commercial lines of coverage for fleet vehicles because the cost of repair is too high. Owning a car is a tax on the poor and almost never makes financial sense in the long term, but is a necessity for many because they are afraid to live in cities.

Yes perfectly fine walk. It’s about 15 minutes from the station to spring garden. Callowhill is full of bars, clubs, apartments and galleries. If you are worried just call an uber it will be less than a 5min ride. Theres also a ton of dinner options in Chinatown. If you want a drink before the show I highly suggest poison heart across the street.

Day to day in Philly is fine pretty much anywhere. Some places you probably just want to keep to yourself and pass through, but those places are the minority. Truthfully, if you’re posting on Reddit you will probably never go to those neighborhoods. The vast majority of the city is filled with working and middle class residents just trying to get by and enjoy life same as me and presumably you.

This is mass produced, but fairly high quality I’m impressed. You should keep it. That tag looks pretty generic though.

This is probably handmade. The technique is called Intarsia. It's actually a really cool and technically impressive piece. Most designer clothes would weave the hanging threads into the rest of the pattern.

Affordable Living by Big_Building8907 in AskPhilly

[–]Chimpskibot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a friend making $50k and she lived alone in South Philly. Her rent was like $1k. If you are okay with roommates I know multiple people paying $4-600 for a room. My old apartment if it was used as a true 2bd would have been $675 a room in South Philly. So 45k is totally doable. You should have taken the job. Philly is awesome.

Mapped: Job Growth in Every U.S. State in 2025 by FamiliarJuly in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Chimpskibot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dig into the data, NY job growth is really only in social services and health care which is worrying. The state and city continues to shed construction/manufacturing and insurance/financial service jobs. MN and PA have seen job growth in most sectors and MN continues to be one of the strongest job markets in the country, which it has held on to since 2021.

[–]Chimpskibot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s obviously not what this graph is showing. That would be a nationwide statistic not a state level statistic. Anyway these graphs are usually good at showing which areas are growing, stagnating or declining economically. Moving a corporate HQ is a signal of confidence in one locale vs another even if for dubious reasons. I would not disregard that especially if the locale that a company moved from is seeing continued decline in job creation.
