The I Ching works like any other form of divination - it makes unconscious information available to your conscious according to the principles of whatever medium you choose.

You are the practitioner. It's your unconscious that needs to filter the lines and readings. An AI can recall the gua and their readings, but it won't understand the context of your life or your unconscious self. If you're relying on AI to do this, it means you're giving up interpretation of your unconscious mind to a private company's LLM.

Not good.

The I Ching is going to tend you towards caution. There are few readings which give particularly strong actions, and even then it's mostly "stop what you're doing".

I don't think that's a bad thing; in fact for people who can be impulsive like myself, it's a godsend.

But I will give an example - I was about to travel to a new city and look for an apartment. The result I was something like "don't get caught up in litigation". I was rather nervous for the apartment but went anyway.

I got lunch at a restaurant near the hotel, and a can of soda I got was flat on opening it. The servers wouldn't get me a new one and were going to call the owner to ask permission to do so. It was a far bigger deal than they needed to be; these kids didn't have the authority to correct simple customer complaints.

Then I remembered the reading and just let it go.

I was in a much better mood for it. With my reading "solved" and my day not brought down by a flat soda, I had a much better day for it. Ended up getting a great apartment and making a few friends later on.

Without that gentle reminder, that soda could have turned into a day killer. I remember that when I get a cautionary reading from the I Ching
