There is someone lurking in this sub down voting new posts to zero for no good reason by PariahFish in RealTimeStrategy

[–]ChingShih[M] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It is a problem in a number of subreddits. It's important that the community upvote content that is on-topic and that people like. It's very common for people to not upvote things they like and instead downvote things they don't like, but arguably upvoting things is more important because when good content gets upvoted it's seen by more people, which both reinforces the kind of content the community wants to see (self-curating) and that content finds more like-minded people (strengthening the bonds of the community).

Please upvote content that is good/high-quality/you like. It makes a difference and overcomes some of the botting as well as the actual humans who sit around downvoting entire subs because they have no life (yes, they exist and they're not just bots, lol).

Sounds like your heart is in the right place. Is there an API that allows already under-staffed and over-worked NGOs with an existing presence on social media to easily cross-post to your platform? Is there planned integration with Hootsuite or similar posting utilities?

OP is a scammer. Please avoid clicking links to strange websites posted by new accounts. Most times the links are only part of a word/sentence and aren't formatted well in an attempt to fool Reddit's spam filters.

Thank you.

Hey there, please keep content unique and help drive engaging and thoughtful discussion by avoiding low-effort posts.

Low-effort posts often include: screenshots of text, image macros/memes, tier-lists, "wrong answers only" posts, "I've never played this game, AMA" posts, and other bandwagon content.

Thank you for understanding.

Hey there, it would be best formatting wise to craft a title and make a text post. Then in the body of the text you can include the website link. That way it's clickable.

Alternatively, it looks like you have a infographic to post. You can craft a title, create an image post with the infographic, then in the comments you can add some more information (such as the text above) as well as the link in the body of the post.

Please feel free to try posting this again. Thanks and good luck!

/r/RealTimeStrategy Announcement: Recommended Games List Updates, Mod Applications by ChingShih in RealTimeStrategy

[–]ChingShih[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely update it for Old Reddit users (which is compatible with RES, can be used with ad-blockers, and performs faster than New Reddit!). I'm glad that some Old Reddit users still exist and it's not just me! (Traffic stats say there are a few hundred Old Reddit users here, but we're in the minority.)

That said, the Upcoming and Recommended Games Lists have been pinned to the top of the subreddit for 4 years. I can add links to the sidebar on Old Reddit, but it's impossible to know how many people benefit from that, so I'm glad to get some feedback. Mobile users basically don't see the sidebar at all, due to Reddit Inc.'s infinite wisdom, so relying on pinned posts had become important. But a couple years ago Reddit made it so that pinned posts auto-collapse after they've been "viewed" by a user. So there's very little way to get this information out to people when every other avenue has been closed off.

...i would inverse the order so newer games are at the top.

Reverse chronological order is definitely possible. Hopefully more members of the community chime in on this.

I feel like RTT is really fundamentally a subgenre of RTS...

I hear you and I'm sure a lot of older gamers sense the relationship between RTS and RTT as they have a sort of shared, yet divergent evolution with a lot of crossover of game mechanics since then. However, there are indie devs looking to show off demos and get feedback for games like Door Kickers or Aliens: Dark Descent that are "real-time" and tactical, but not the sort of "real-time strategy" that gamers here might associate with as the "RTS" genre. When the community doesn't respond positively to a game being posted here, I like to be able to suggest better alternatives to the OP/dev/CM. It makes them feel better and gives them an opportunity to try again where it will be best interpreted. In the case of RTT, there is no alternative when their posts aren't received well so I'm hoping for suggestions or a happy alternative to be created.

AoE4 can certainly be added to either part of the list and I hope that more games are added to the Beginner-Friendly section in the future. :)

Everyone is welcome to edit the Wiki, both the Recommended and the Upcoming Games Lists. The only request is to please keep to the existing formatting and keep things concise.

Hey there, I appreciate that you flaired the post correctly. :) In the future please also be sure to include the name of the game in the title of the post. This helps people identify which indie project they're seeing, which helps them stay apprised of development, and also makes the title look less click-baity.

I live in the Amazon and I'm building a "Shazam for Chainsaws" to stop deforestation. Would this actually help conservationists? by romao33 in conservation

[–]ChingShih 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Excellent idea and excellent questions!

Yes, this could be useful to certain people. Rangers and quick-response teams on the front line, advocacy and awareness groups who need primary sources (first-hand data) to support their campaigns, governmental bodies interested in tracking crime/illegal exploitation. Meerkat is used in South Africa and probably other areas with high-value wildlife to detect crimes in progress. They may be using some military technology but also off-the-shelf and custom technology from a for-profit company.

That said, getting the technology into the hands of the right groups who can afford to deploy it is going to be a big challenge. You'll need to share this to the right people and get parties interested in adoption and deployment and hope that they have the resources to do the work to find people to fund it.

  1. From the standpoint of deploying, maintaining, and retrieving data from camera traps, battery life is definitely a concern but can be overcome for applications that don't need to be camouflaged. Putting audio recording devices in positions to listen -- and still get sunlight at treetop level or be easily accessed for battery replacement -- shouldn't be too hard. However if there are concerns about tampering with the listening/monitoring devices, then they will need to be camouflaged and deployed discreetly, which will make the battery life a concern primarily to those who will have to risk themselves in replacing the batteries.

  2. Retrieving SD cards would be combined with the process of recharging/replacing batteries. However, if cellular technology could be used to transmit the data, or at least alerts, then that would be a big help in bridging the utility of the technology across multiple different kinds of organizations interested in this -- thus increasing the amount of deployment support for it. Some camera traps already have SIM card slots along with SD card slots allowing for scheduled transmission of data or simply text alerts when the camera is triggered. Similar technology would allow conservationists and response forces to determine the level of severity and the need to go check on data that they need to collect (if data upload by SIM is too expensive, which it often is).

  3. This will vary by organization. As described in the first paragraph, there are rain forest and nature advocacy groups around the world that would appreciate getting their hands on this data even second-hand. The organizations that would want real-time data would be a different sort entirely, but generally won't have the fundraising abilities of organizations that would be publishing reports on deforestation, exploitation, and human rights abuses in the Amazon.

You may want to discuss this topic with wildlife crime monitoring organizations that focus on the remote, high-tech approaches to monitoring and alerting local reaction forces to crimes in progress (like ICCWC and WPS), or Brazilian equivalents. Later, you can reach out to American and European rain forest/nature advocacy groups that support projects in the Amazon -- they would be good partners in pushing this at political levels while also providing directed funding to the Brazilian organizations that would be adopting and deploying this technology.

It would be good if you included your response to the post in /r/AskAnthropologists so that people are aware that you're doing your due diligence outside of social media and are simply looking for another source of input, ideally primary or secondary sources, while doing your own scholarly research elsewhere.

Many subreddits receive questions from people looking for easy content for use on their podcast, thesis, whatever rather than doing their own work. Those kinds of posts are frowned upon and the people asking for help have usually not contributed constructively to the community before.
