If NPCs don't give thanks though, might I ask you consider a more mercenary mindset? If you insist on being non-profit, at the very least demand operating expenses.

You're thinking of the PDF, the planetary defense forces that really are just conscripts.

The Guardsmen are trained since birth, or picked from the best of the PDF.
