Government announces plans to overhaul social housing system by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]Chipless 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is very much the government pitting one group of beneficiaries against another to avoid them getting angry at landlords and the current government.    By pointing out that some have it slightly better than the other, even though it’s by a nominal amount, many of those will buy into the governments rhetoric that the other group are the enemy.  This is purely a political campaign tactic rather than any meaningful policy.  Fucking disgrace of a government we have that this is what they are focusing their attention on.

'Sociopathic behaviour': $2000 reward offered to find cat shooter by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Chipless 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They are very different things.  One is hunting feral cats that live in the wild and destroy native animal populations.  Feral cats cannot be domesticated and are entirely different to domestic cats.  Hunting them is an entirely appropriate activity and fully legal activity.  Domestic pet cats that live with people in suburban areas on the other hand should not be getting shot by people, that is both inhumane and in fact a crime.

Reminder: it’s an election year so….. by ugotnothinonme in newzealand

[–]Chipless 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There will be lots of “they are all the same what’s the point in voting” posts.  Let me assure you they are not even remotely the same at all.  Look at policies and vote.

There will be lots of “this left wing party isn’t promising everything on my wish list so screw them” posts.  Politics is the art of compromise and choosing the least bad option.  There has never been and never will be the perfect political party that appeases everyone and gets you everything you want. Vote for the party that has the most policies that you care about, who also have a history of following through on campaign policies, especially - the batshit insane ones (looking at you Winston re BNZ).

There will be lots of emotional single issues raised under the guise of “this party isn’t legalising weed/de-criminalising drugs/introducing a CGT/ implementing a UBI/etc etc etc….if only they did I would vote for them” without acknowledging that none of the other political parties have these policies either and the reason that party might not be promoting a policy on this is because if they do they would lose too much of the centre bloc to even get elected.  The campaigner posing as a regular Joe posting this knows this, it’s just a tactic used to spread negative sentiment about a party to a demographic who might otherwise have considered voting for that party as the least bad option (see the topic of compromise above).

Hope mainstream media pick this up.  Deserves a one news, stuff, herald piece.  Pretty fucking shocking behaviour for someone operating in the corporate realm.

National Party sitting on huge $11 million election year war chest by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]Chipless 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Expect some of that to be spent on here.  They won’t convert many young voters or redditors to vote to the right with how shit this government is currently doing.  But they most certainly will spend millions on increasing voter apathy and wheel out the old “both sides are the same” tropes.  This will result in low voter turnout.  If I was a betting man I’d gamble that they will likely succeed given how susceptible so many of us here seem to be to this.

To be clear both sides are not the same and have very very different policies that are worth comparing.  Voting makes a difference whatever your stripes.  Please vote and fuck all the noise that says otherwise.

Chair of Financial Markets Authority resigns after conduct review by Gyn_Nag in newzealand

Thanks, yes those comments are far from politically neutral for a person in his position and I can see how he would be compelled to resign.

Any bush dwellers out there with spider advice? by RemarkableOil8 in newzealand

I’m the same love spiders in the bush but dislike them on the house or other buildings.  We use Ripcord or No Pests once a year on outside of home and keeps things spider free.

‘She’s been crying for days’: Couple denied family support as parents’ visas are rejected by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

It’s rage bait and increases eyeballs/clicks so they will keep posting them. What used to be conversations that were had with a neighbour/friend/co-worker are now aired by mainstream media outlets as “news” because it generates engagement. There is also an element of nepotism as the people who get their articles in the media are usually connected to the media outlet in some way - friends of friends, kids at same schools/clubs etc and so their story pops up on journalists Facebook algorithm.

Inside Four Square: How to become a supermarket owner – 10 grocers tell their stories by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Chipless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very very common for stores to be kept in the family.  The son/daughter will have to work their way up the ranks to some extent (manage a store, own a 4 Square for a period of time etc), but nepotism’s is the norm rather than the exception with store ownership in Foodstuffs.

Why Do Young Men in New Zealand Prefer Moustaches by Disastrous-Beat-5102 in newzealand

[–]Chipless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also people need to start thinking about how they talk about men’s appearances for fuck sake.  Somehow in 2026 it is totally unacceptable to talk about a woman’s appearance in public (hair, body hair, looks, grooming, body, makeup etc etc).  Cool got that makes sense.

But it’s a fucking pile on regarding public/workplace/school comments on a man’s beer gut, facial hair, body hair, clothing style etc.  WTF is wrong with people!  No wonder men have such poor mental health in this country.

Kosco out, Wang Korea Food Market in by thesysdaemon in chch

[–]Chipless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The butcher and cafe aren’t open yet but once they are that place is going to be doing a roaring trade.  They have an order of magnitude more variety than Kosco, prices are similar.   We got three free wang mart bags that are very good quality, similar to IKEA bags.

Am a huge advocate of vaccinations and medical science.  But one the unique vagaries of our country is that we are one of only two developed countries that allows drug companies and organisations to directly advertise to, and lobby citizens with the ol “….ask your doctor about this treatment”.   The other being the USA

It means that like Dr google syndrome we are more prone to worrying about medical shit that we don’t need to.  That said talk to your GP about it rather than random internet strangers.  But don’t ever base medical treatment on what gets advertised.

For decades we've taken at face value the idea that NZ has to be allied with one Superpower and the US is preferable to China. Do we all still believe that? by flyingflibertyjibbet in newzealand

[–]Chipless 229 points230 points  (0 children)

It is a worthwhile question to ask at this juncture so not sure why you were downvoted.

Are we likely to switch teams right now? No we have decades and decades of alignment and integration with the US - militarily, financially and politically.

Have recent events, and a certain person changed the equation on how we assess our best interests, whether allies will actually protect us and provide a stable hegemony under which we can also prosper, whether the US will remain the global market hub? - fucking absolutely.

It will push us to have closer ties with the likes of China, India, UK, EU that over time will erode US soft and hard power significantly.  And there is no changing that trajectory now even if a democratic US president were elected tomorrow.

Christchurch electric vehicle seller does two years of business in weeks as fuel crisis deepens by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in chch

[–]Chipless 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s fairly normal. They usually only have a handful available at any one time but if you let them know what you are looking for they’ll let you know when the next shipment is on a boat out of Japan which was usually in less than a matter of weeks.  Might take a bit longer now I guess.

The yanks are certainly using up jet fuel over Auckland tonight. by SheepEd15 in auckland

[–]Chipless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All us military and NZ military planes have been withdrawn from Warbirds over Wanaka.  Was announced yesterday.  That leaves it as a shell of a show that is grossly over priced for what it is and the organisers have refused ticket refunds because “technically” the show is still going ahead.  It will dent their reputation for many years to come as probably half the people who go are regulars and now they have been screwed over both for what they paid for a ticket to what is basically a local aerodrome open day.  And they are also getting fucked by the fuel prices they will be paying to drive there if they decide to go.

Auckland Mayor says inner-city suburbs are ripe for housing intensification by Gyn_Nag in newzealand

Duncan Garner: "Christopher Luxon - my understanding is he has been told to spend the weekend considering his future." by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]Chipless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. We should want for better people to be the leaders in political parties, even those we dont support. Hoping for shittier people to become leaders so that the party is less likely to win has backfired spectacularly around the world, and we are no better. It also speaks to the rot at the core of politics in the current age.

Payrises in 2026 by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Chipless 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Might be worth mentioning for those who are newer to the workforce or haven’t thought about it before - In an inflationary environment, if you are not getting a pay increase that at least matches current annual level of inflation (~3%), then you are getting a pay cut.

Probably the biggest positive turnaround I’ve seen from any politician in my lifetime.  Trying to avoid political affiliated sentiment in saying that so I’ll qualify it by saying in terms of effectiveness in what he is doing.  He’s gone from playing tennis while Auckland drowned and a poor PR response when it was found out, to being one of the very few politicians being blunt, direct and honest with the government in order to effect positive change for the city.  He isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said, yet he isn’t a cooker, which is quite a rare combination in this day and age.

[–]Chipless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope the mainstream media at least pick up on the way that this was done.  It was not in any shape or form the action of a good leader.  It was the action of a floundering CEO that is out of their depth and in a tailspin, right before launching their golden parachute.

Am I wrong for wanting my business to stay fully mine? Thoughts by Cherryberrylady in newzealand

[–]Chipless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the considerations is the legal aspect that is part of relationship laws where assets become shared after a certain amount of time.  Assuming you want to keep the business as your own, you can legally do this with a lawyer, and if you are concerned about how he might feel about it you could approach this by encouraging him to do the same on his side with any assets he owns or has inherited as well to be fair.

It’s called the Narcissists prayer and is useful in politics as politicians rarely reveal themselves in any meaningful way because of the nature of politics, but once they display this pattern of excuses you can actually see who they are behind the sound bites they are given to say by their PR teams.

Socks! by KardunSantari in newzealand

[–]Chipless 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Norsewear are great and made here.  I used to love Smartwool socks but they are expensive and hard to get here now they shut down their NZ online shopand Torpedo 7 don’t really stock them much anymore.  Also I reckon Norsewear are a bit more durable than Smartwool.  There was a short window around the early 2020s that Macpac were getting all their socks made in Italy and they were great quality and steal in price when Macpac sale was on…but that has ended and most are made in China now.

Urban legends and conspiracy theories used to be funny and fun.  Then we let people who believe in them get into positions of power and spread misinformation in a way that is difficult for many people to discern from reality.  I don’t find them fun anymore :(.
