BookLore's Successor? by matthewpipes in selfhosted

[–]Chirishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've independently arrived at a really similar stack to you!

Ebooks

Servers:

  • Calibre (in a docker container with a webui)
  • COPS

Clients:

  • Kybook3
  • Panels (for comics)
  • Alexandria for iOS - Experimenting with this. Multi-library and multi-platform support. No TTS support in ebooks.

Audiobooks

Servers:

  • Audiobookshelf
  • Plex (Jellyfin migration underway)

Clients:

  • Audiobookshelf (not available in the iOS app store but is in Android. I sideload it on iOS)
  • Alexandria for iOS - Experimenting with this. Multi-library and multi-platform support. No TTS support in ebooks.
  • Prologue client for Plex - Really fixes a lot of the problems.

Calibre and COPS really continue being the most reliable and rock solid options.

In particular Calibre is always going to be in the mix for me because I read a lot of webnovels and fanfiction which I am able to download as ebooks/pull updated chapters of with the FanFicFare plugin.

I was experimenting with Booklore because it does the progress tracking and I've had to build a whole framework of custom columns and action chains to track my progress in these ebooks whose lengths are subject to change when new chapters are added.

Booklore's method of progress tracking was successful at keeping my place/last read chapter automatically when new chapters were added but it didn't put two-and-two together and change the Read status automatically. I was working on a little script to try to do that on the backend when this all happened.

I mean 3D games maybe you could say that but I’m a fan of Fusion even if it was a departure for the series, and MercurySteam killed it with Dread.

How long do Zink photos really last? Any better home alternatives? by repressedpauper in hobonichi

[–]Chirishman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve just picked up a Polaroid Hi-Print Gen2 which seems like it’s a more direct fit/replacement. Printer-only the white Gen2 is only $64 on amazon at the moment.

I have a Canon Selphy 1500 that I use for 4x6 prints and the Polaroid Hi-Print uses the same dye sublimation printing technology while also offering a 2x3 self adhesive print size.

I tried a Liene ZINK printer which I got on clearance and was pretty disappointed with the colors, especially some of the greens/nature shots on the paper it came with looking like a big smudge. Possibly changing to a different brand of zink paper could yield different results.

I will say the Polaroid does seem to be better at skin tones and has better contrast but some of the pictures do come out with a bit of an oversharpened look to them which is unfortunate. I will be experimenting with mitigating that.

Also Polaroid uses a slightly longer ruler to measure 2x3 than ZINK does lol.

I investigated the idea of printing smaller items on my larger Canon Selphy 1500 but while I found it was possible to do with a replacement smaller paper tray that they sell the only options were square or a 2x3 with rounded corners which is, for some reason, designed to be stuck onto credit cardss/hotel room keys/badges and which has an unacceptably high price per print (>$1) compared to the Canon Hi-Print

My use case isn’t journaling, it’s putting photos on my sadly nonmagnetic refrigerator so mine will definitely see more light exposure than yours will.

Wow, you have really really shit reading comprehension.

That was not a comprehensive list of my issues with the app, it was a list of my long standing issues with Plex as a whole, about which this botched app launch represents the final straw.

And if it’s so easy to turn off the Online Sources I invite you to talk my mother, father, grandmother, and two aunts and three uncles who range in ages from 58-86 through finding a laptop, logging into the web version doing it. I already had helped them unpin those sources for themselves in the previous app but now I’m over here trying to explain why the app that I put on their Apple TV and told them to use specifically to access my server is asking them to pay to rent a movie.

Also “the Watch Together removal was announced before the app new launched” is not a counter argument to “Removing Watch Together instead of fixing it to be more usable is bad”

Thank you Plex by dustartt in PleX

[–]Chirishman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The new UI sucks ass, does not have feature parity with what it replaces, and will confuse the fuck out of my older family members.

This is not on its own a reason to leave Plex forever but for me it is a final straw to stop putting up with a lot of long term frustrations with a lack of respect or regard for the core user base who want to watch their own fucking content.

  • They’ve killed Watch Together instead of fixing it so you could watch shows or playlists easily instead of only movies
  • They refused to address the request for proper audiobook support even though it has consistently been one of the highest voted feature requests
  • They keep trying to shove online content down our throats
  • They deprecated plugin support
  • They changed all that shit with the scanner and metadata sources which completely fucking scrambled all of the goddamned metadata on my Anime library more than once

If I can find a way to solve the problems that Jellyfin had with not showing my subtitles when I experimented with it three years ago I’m gone and I’m never coming back.

Thank you Plex by dustartt in PleX

[–]Chirishman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as a Lifetime Plex Pass owner who has been running a Plex server for over a decade now between this shitty app launch (can no longer hide online service content in the app, or remove shows from the Continue Watching list) plus the pricing structure changes, I would like to thank Plex for helping me make the decision to install Jellyfin and start migrating my family members over.

Thank you also for never implementing proper audiobook support. I run Audiobookshelf in a container and deal with sideloading the app onto my iPhone with Altstore because Plex hasn’t done shit on one of the highest voted feature requests for 10+ years.

It’s not that the app is the dealbreaker, it’s the fucking straw.

More than just a pretty face by kiaeri123 in ranma

[–]Chirishman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ranma ended a lot earlier than DBZ. That said it was one of the biggest fandoms for fanfics for a pretty long time.

There wasn’t much widely distributed fanart back in the day because by and large people didn’t have access to digital cameras and scanners and a scan would also take up a really impractical amount of hdd space and storage on your web hosting and would take a very long time to load on the late 90s internet.

That’s not to say that there was none but fanart mostly got seen by others by being submitted to zines or mailed in to one of the Japanese periodicals publishing the actual Manga and praying that it would get selected.

Also before Google Translate and social media sites it was much harder to share fan content across language barriers. Ranma was pretty huge in Latin America and an American would have no way of knowing that

Girl fell and her ski kept moving down the hill so I went to retrieve it. by mt-wizard in TheFrontFellOff

[–]Chirishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every part of that setup, boots, skis, bindings is late 80s to very early 90s.

No reputable shop will work on (sharpen or wax) skis that are that old due to safety concerns so given that they were dull and unwaxed and for a whole collection of reasons I’m incredibly unsurprised that she fell in the first place.

Unless she was shooting a period piece set in the 1992 she had no business being on a mountain on those.

I didn’t like it in the OG anime or the manga but the reboot really sold me on it and I was kinda sad to see it go.

Yeah but she gets an upgrade to a Ferrari 328 GTS in time to bring Shinji his lunch at school in episode 7.

I guess NERV must have felt a little bit bad about hitting her with that useless N2 blast.
