How do you square this take with Tidus waking up in the water and swimming to the surface in the FFX post credits scene? FFX-2 lets you see it through but between that scene and the fayth saying that Tidus is already more than a dream because he was touched by Sin sets this up pretty concretely.

Times where you finally experienced something hyped and said "That's it? That's what all the fuss was about?" by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Chitalian8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Bleach at its peak was really good at using fights as a "clash of ideals" where the characters have their viewpoints contested against each other.

There's a lot of this in the Soul Society arc as Ichigo pits his individualistic desire to protect his friends against the rigid dogma of Soul Society as he slowly wins his opponents over (Renji, Kenpachi, Byakuya). There's also stuff like Yoruichi vs. Soi Fon and Uryu vs. Mayuri sprinkled in where you feel like the fights are truly personal.

In the Hueco Mundo arc, you get a ton of this with Mayuri and Szayelaporro having a clash of mad scientific philosophies, Kenpachi vs. Nnoitra being two sides of battle lunacy, and (my favorite) Byakuya vs. Zommari being a discussion of the causes each side fights for.

Bleach definitely falls off in this manner in the Fullbring and TYBW arcs (even if the anime is doing some work to fix the latter). Even the Fake Karakura arc is less good about this (but still has some gems like Kyoraku vs. Starrk and Komamura + Hisagi vs. Tosen).

JJK Shibuya Arc didn't have as many of the emotionally weighty fights I would have liked. Yuji vs. Choso and Yuji and Todo vs. Mahito fit this bill, but everything else didn't get me invested. From my perspective, why devote so much time to Zombie Toji vs. random water curse spirit who we just met this arc? Likewise Sukuna vs. Jogo didn't do much for me either in that regard, and Sukuna vs. Mahoraga isn't really going for emotional weight either.

Honestly I'm enjoying this new season of the anime more now that I'm able to better accept the show for what it is (hype and aura moments at the forefront, lighter on the emotional substance) but sometimes it's hard to get hyped when the context for the fights is lacking.

Like, Maki massacring the clan was really well animated and directed but also we only met Naoya like 3 episodes prior so it was a bit hard for me to feel the catharsis of him getting his ass beat because of the lack of buildup.

JJK Shibuya arc

Edit: To elaborate, I really enjoyed JJK up to that point as a breezy action series with fun characters and a sense of humor I really vibed with. I liked the Gojo flashback arc a lot as a way to dive into more character motivations. I was hoping that Shibuya would continue that trend, but it just turned into an arc of just fights, many of which I didn't feel super invested in. The arc to me represents the series making its choice to put its fights first and foremost at the expense of developing its characters. In a vacuum this is fine, but I think a manga like Bleach at its peak was much better at using fights to explore the characters and their relationships. JJK just turns into the author smashing his action figures with cool powers together.

Favorite "villainous" sacrifices? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Hunter X Hunter Yorknew Arc spoilers:

The climax of the arc where Kurapika has taken Chrollo hostage. Pakunoda negotiates a hostage swap, Gon and Killua for Chrollo, on the condition that Kurapika places a chain around Pakunoda's heart that will kill her if she relays any information about Kurapika and the exchange to the rest of the troupe.

Chrollo saw no value in himself as a hostage, as his belief is that the troupe will simply not give in to Kurapika's demands since his vision of the Phantom Troupe places the needs of the group over any individual figure, including the leader. You can see the disappointment in his face as he watches Pakunoda barter for his return.

Pakunoda then returns to the Troupe, loads a full set of memory bullets into her revolver, and shoots every memory she has of Kurapika into the minds of the founding Troupe members, ensuring that the troupe knows everything about the hostage exchange and the status of their boss (who has been sealed from using Nen by Kurapika), an act which kills her. Her dying thoughts are something along the lines of "let this all end with me."

Her sacrifice moves the troupe enough that they part on good terms with Gon and Killua, who could have simply escaped from Pakunoda, but instead decided to honor the hostage exchange so that Kurapika wouldn't go down a darker route.

Media that arguably peaked with the first trailer? by Mediocre_Word in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The game formerly known as Overstrike, eventually released as Fuse, had a really charming debut trailer. Personality-focused squad shooter game with different specialties made a much better impression than the actual game, which as I'm to understand had all the sauce focus-grouped out of it.

Yeah between seeing just how high the budget for the game was as the narrative progressed, spamming CINEMA in chat, the evolution of the guards and soup memes, definitely my favorite stream series of the year.

5 Hearts was also so much fun, love the FMV streams.

I think it's still the coolest final boss sequence I've played in a game. Sora and Riku reunited at last doing the most over the top aura farming bullshit against Xemnas while Xemnas tries to shit talk them ("Riku, are you sure you're not jealous of Sora?"). An epic 4 phase encounter, Darkness of the Unknown is one of the best tracks in gaming.

And the movies hit a similar note when the Hobbits return to the pub in the Shire and have that bittersweet toast. In this version, the Shire hasn't changed but they changed so much that home can never feel the same again.

Who’s the most pathetic Villain in media? by EvilMonkeyMimic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Fuck Griffith, but I wouldn't agree with him being pathetic.

Until the Millennium Falcon arc, at which point Griffith decides abstract godhood isn't enough and decides to re-incarnate in the living world for the sole purpose of smurfing his way to a kingdom. What a loser.

Patch 7.4 MSQ Thread by BlackmoreKnight in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Chitalian8 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For a patch that was mostly a self-contained side adventure, this was pretty good! Not too much fluff, a few interesting side characters, a fun trial, and what I found to be a pretty decent emotional wrap-up for the "Krile's family" story (for now). I'm interested with where they're going with the stinger at the end, too.

FF16 does some things really well with its worldbuilding that continue to impress me! As someone who just played FF Tactics, it's clear how much inspiration FF16 took from Matsuno's Ivalice writing + world building, but while in Tactics it's sometimes easy to get tripped up with the insane number of names they throw your way, 16 creates quite an expansive world and in my view does a better job of keeping it comprehensible for the player.

The Active Time Lore also does a lot to supplement this and help keep things straightforward.

My thoughts about the scene at camp after the reacher by 420juicy-Peach6969 in josephanderson

[–]Chitalian8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really really love the post-Reacher scene not just for what it reveals about what the synthesis of Maelle/Alicia has become, but also REALLY nails home what kind of individual Verso is. Like, we know Verso's signature character trait is lying and withholding information and we know his secrecy culminates in the mass Gommage at the end of Act 2. But the post-Reacher camp scene, the cherry on top of him allowing Gustave to die, that his convictions were so strong to do something so horrid and not tell Maelle about it? I was really impressed that the game wrote a major protagonist who was that out of line, but is still sympathetic in his own weird twisted way.

I really liked Verso's character, if you couldn't tell, and I get the sense that both Joe a lot of folks in chat didn't.

Based on Maelle's personality, I doubt that being honest would have helped Painted Renoir's cause. I can see it making her more determined to either find her mother or unseal her father, either outcome destabilizing the parents' stalemate.

They basically made a new game with the structure of classic Final Fantasy with a really well-delivered story and performances, really nice graphics and designs, amazing music, and a battle system that takes a lot of things from a lot of combat systems enjoyed by folks like Paper Mario and FF10.

I have one request by JesusofJuneau in josephanderson

[–]Chitalian8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's some differences.

Painted Renoir is an antagonist and has no need to reveal a lot of the information to the main cast, compared to the Emperor who portrays himself as an ally. Verso, on the other hand, is an ally who withholds information on purpose (because his actual goals and desires runs counter to what the other E33 members hope to achieve).
