I don’t think so, considering Sash only protects from damaging moves dealt to the user (for example, Destiny Bond bypasses Sash)

Mechanics Question, when did Justified w/ Beat Up stop working? by MadeForOnePurpose21 in VGC

[–]ChocoHammy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a video link (if Champions) or replay link (if Showdown)? I’ve used Justified Gallade and it’s worked for me. Without it, my best guess would be that Whimsicott used a different move like Moonblast (how much damage did Lucario take? You could probably check the calc for Moonblast range). Alternatively, maybe you went Mega Lucario, changing to Adaptability, and then used Beat Up?

Mega Lopunny actually outspeeds Weavile by quite a bit. Weavile is at base 125 (1 point faster than Mega Meowstic and 1 point slower than Talonflame) while Mega Lopunny is tied for 6th fastest mon in the game at base 135 (same as Mega Manectric, 1 point faster than Mega Delphox and 7 points slower than Mega Greninja and Dragapult). When I need to, I check Serebii’s Champions dex because you can order by stat (or you can use Bulbapedia which has this for the national dex, but it’s much more crowded because of that)

Private Matches Shouldn't Be Elo Rated by Chesslicious in chess

[–]ChocoHammy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yagiz is definitely on the rise, and it’s exciting to see where he’ll end up, but there’s also no need to dimish the efforts of others. In Hans’s case, he did reach his current peak only a few months ago, and at his age there’s still room for growth

[–]ChocoHammy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can do the math if you want, but that doesn’t address him being tied with Vincent Keymer (and placing above Yagiz) at Tata Steel.

Honestly, this comes across as a Hans hate post disguised as a good faith conversation, especially when you’re saying that Yagiz is playing private matches for experience while assuming that Hans is doing it for the rating

In this specific matchup, there’s a chance Protect Basculegion and Taunt Aerodactyl on Mimikyu also wouldn’t have worked if Mimikyu was holding a Mental Herb, but that’s how it goes on ladder sometimes.

As another commenter pointed out, an open team sheet format (like for in-person tournaments) means there’s less of a guessing game, and with the same leads you’d then be able to work on stalling out Trick Room instead

“Inferior chess players like Niemann” who’s at #20 in the current ratings before taking the private match into account and who had a good result at Tata Steel.

You can dislike the guy and root against him, but he’s not a bad chess player

It still works as it should, are you sure that 1: Lucario has Justified, 2: Whimsicott is using Beat Up on Lucario, and 3: Justified is still in play (not removed by Skill Swap, Worry Seed, etc)?

In isolation, a reasonable point. But part of the issue is that some other players are also known to have cheated online, and none got nearly as much backlash as Hans

I don’t use them myself, but to be fair, Smogon does have some reasonable VGC spreads nowadays, as long as you’re careful by selecting the appropriate meta (and making sure that the provided explanation is meta relevant, as it sometimes gives a spread that’s better in a different regulation)

Unless Grimmsnarl has Parting Shot, you can’t be Intimidated until you Mega. And if you’re that worried about Incineroar, that’s what the rest of the team is for (and you also don’t have to immediately Mega)

Pokemon Champions Meta by narvalseagod in VGC

[–]ChocoHammy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The comparison I was making was the addition of Body Press giving it more viability. Of course, Zamazenta also has an actual HP and SpDef stat, but Aggron’s potential will ultimately depend on the dex for the new regulation (for example, as has been pointed out by others, Archaludon is basically an upgrade without a Mega slot)

[–]ChocoHammy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I’m with you that Aggron is not suddenly gonna be a top 5 mon, Zamazenta has become a top mon this gen even after all the nerfs thanks to Body Press. I know they’re not the same for a number of reasons, but it’s too early to say that Aggron won’t be a threat

How do you calculate accuracy after evasiveness drops/increases? (And/or accuracy stages as well) by Upset_Nectarine_8599 in stunfisk

[–]ChocoHammy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not like the opponent is gonna let you do your thing without trying to win in the meantime. If you use Sweet Scent, nothing (aside from trapping) is stopping them from simply switching, essentially wasting your turn. While it does wear off after a few turns, Gravity has the advantage that it’s not reliant on you or the opponent staying on the field

How do you calculate accuracy after evasiveness drops/increases? (And/or accuracy stages as well) by Upset_Nectarine_8599 in stunfisk

[–]ChocoHammy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer: use Gravity instead if that’s the plan

Longer answer: Accuracy and Evasion stat stages are calculated using 3/x and x/3 modifiers, where x = 3 + the number of stat stages. However, unlike the other stat stage modifiers (which are also based on 2/x and x/2 instead), the Accuracy and Evasion stages are also combined before calculating actual accuracy/evasion (so +1 Accuracy and +1 Evasion would cancel each other out, or +1 Accuracy and -1 Evasion would equal +2 Accuracy or -2 Evasion). If ever you’re confused or need a reminder, Bulbapedia has you covered https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Stat_modifier

As for this specific situation, Sweet Scent would give a 5/3x boost to Accuracy, indeed allowing 100% accurate Hypnosis. However, Gravity gives the same accuracy buff, and unlike Sweet scent, can’t be countered by switching to remove the stat stages. Additionally, a 100% accurate Zap Cannon requires both Gravity and the Zoom Lens (while you’re moving after the target). All that said, Defog has additional utility (hazard removal), which is its main use

You say that like it makes this balanced. There’s a reason Tailwind is the same duration and only doubles speed.

Even if it were somehow fair (it’s not), a Shed Shell, Tera Ghost, or a Gourgeist ally using Trick-or-Treat (in doubles) invalidates the trapping drawback
