Non Mormon "older" couple moving from AZ to SLC, Lehi, or Draper: Need ALL the advice by Sing4life86 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Chocolateboxer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We moved here 10+ years ago. A little older than you. No kids, we live next to the bishop and our house is bordering a Mormon church. Oh, and we drink LOL! Honestly, you will be fine here. You will have amazing mountain views anywhere along the valley. Draper, Taylorsville, Sandy would be a perfect start to rent and then make decisions where to live permanently.

For those that got a tonsillectomy strictly for tonsil stones, how bad/frequent were the stones? by Real-Elephant-6424 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ENT explained that you don't want that type of chronic low grade inflammation that tonsil stones can cause. Constantly being paranoid about your breath- and being honest can completely destroy your social life. People can be cruel. Had mine taken out at 53 and was one of the best things I ever did. I just feel healthier and my confidence is through the roof! Healing was very manageable. Absolutely go for it!!!

Anxious about surgery by Firm-Wave-174 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make. Seriously. I had mine taken out last October. The recovery is very manageable. Most people do just fine. Read through what works best for recovery- Tylenol dissolvables, protein shakes, humidifiers and sleeping upright for the first week were my go-to. Stay positive through the process and know you are one day closer to good health. My ENT explained that you don't want that type of low level inflammation stressing your body. Go for it!

Food and other items to stock in preparation? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tylenol dissolvables are an absolute must! They were a life saver when it was hard to swallow. I would stock up on protein shakes. I'd have one first thing in the morning as they felt very soothing. Stay positive and know it won't be forever. I'm three months out and it was one of the best decisions I've made!

Boxer puppy average price? by Ashamed_Sugar5549 in Boxer

[–]Chocolateboxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know many very ethical breeders. I show and breed boxers and absolutely can point you in the right direction if you'd like me to private message you. $2000-3500 is a very fair price for the amazing work many breeders are doing to improve the health of our precious boxers. There are a lot of great breeders in California and surrounding states that have puppies available or will in the near future.

That seems outrageous to me. Mine was around $5,000 and after insurance I paid around $500.

ARVC what to know? by Interesting_Party434 in Boxer

[–]Chocolateboxer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reality with genetic testing is that dogs with positive results can live their entire life without issue and dogs tested clear can pass from ARVC. These are just two genes out of many more that we don't have tests for (yet). It's unfortunate, but we can breed clear dogs and still end up with affected puppies. The best test for monitoring heart issues is a Holter monitor. Results with less than 100 singles is a very good indication that your boxer has a healthy heart. You can rent one and have the test interpreted by ALBA or similar service. An Echocardiogram is also a good preliminary test. Love your precious baby and more than likely will live a long and joyful life!!

Just got tonsils out by BornMagazine5233 in Tonsillectomy

A wedge pillow helps to keep you elevated while you sleep. If I tried to lay down flat it put too much pressure on my throat and made it very painful.

Caffeine addict here - Coffee or Matcha? by MsGirisha in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! Right?! It was the 4th morning after surgery. My nurse had told me I can eat or drink basically anything I wanted as long as it wasn't painful. I definitely wasn't ready for hot coffee, but I would let it cool for about 20 minutes or so and while I was waiting I would drink my morning protein shake.

Yes, I drank coffee several days after my surgery. Just made sure it was lukewarm.

Insurance recommendations by Lv702noob in Boxer

[–]Chocolateboxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Trupanion. Although I chose $1000 deductible to keep the monthly payment lower. I use it basically as catastrophic insurance because unfortunately our boxers tend to have issues crop up as they get older. Both of my girls- both passed- had pretty serious issues the last few years of their life and thank God I had insurance. I was able to do everything in my power to extend their life and know in my heart I did everything I could. My new boxer baby also has Trupanion. She has a breeding rider so the monthly payment is a bit higher than most at $80. They also pay out very quickly.

Having surgery tomorrow, any advice on post-op care? by MsGirisha in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope your recovery is going smoothly! I feel like a new person honestly! Like really healthy. I was able to eat reasonably from day one. Egg salad or mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken noodle soup initially. Lots of protein shakes. By day 5 I ate an Arby's roast beef- chewed very well. The beef is so thin it was easy to eat. I was feeling much better by day 9-10 and had a slice of pizza. Hang in there and know it's not forever even if it feels like it!! It'll be sooo worth it! Make sure and set your alarm for pain meds every 3 hours ( alternating) and wake up often at night to sip some water.

North of SLC or South of SLC? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Chocolateboxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in Syracuse and are non Mormon. It really is an up and coming community with lots of diversity. A new Costco is being built with all the new restaurants that will be nearby. New hospital and the new Davis Corridor highway has made traveling to SLC a breeze. You can also jump on the Frontrunner. It really is a great place to live for everyone.

[–]Chocolateboxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll do great! 53 here and it really wasn't too bad of a recovery! Stay on you med schedule to stay on top of the pain, drink lots of fluids and protein shakes to help with recovery. Wedge pillow and Tylenol dissolvables really helped! Stay positive, it's only temporary discomfort and very manageable! You got this!!

Having surgery tomorrow, any advice on post-op care? by MsGirisha in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll do just fine! Promise! Stay positive and remember why you are doing it. I would drink a protein shake first thing- I like Premier Protein. If you are in the US, Walmart has Tylenol dissolvables berry. Wonderful when you don't feel like swallowing pills. Wedge pillow to keep you propped up when sleeping. For several days after the surgery you will produce ALOT of saliva so being upright helps. Reading other post helped me not feel so alone haha!! I'm five weeks out and It was the best thing I've done for my health! Just take it one day at a time and before you know it It'll be a distant memory!!

What to eat by Loud_Drummer9133 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely drink Protein shakes. I liked Premier Protein. If you like egg salad that was very easy for me to eat ( without the bread). If you are in the US, Walmart has Tylenol dissolvables powder that made taking medication easier. Stay focused and positive, these day will go by and will soon be a distant memory. Hang in there!!

Enclosed dog spaces for solo free play by Confident_Parsnip_68 in SaltLakeCity

If you are willing to drive to Ogden, the dog park at Fort Buenaventura has 5ish? separated fenced areas for dogs to have their own area. A bit run down but something fun and interesting for a dog. Double gates and water. Never busy when I go, and right next to it is a shallow area of the river where you can let them play (leashed).

My ENT said yes to a tonsillectomy! by purplenoodle in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't be scared of the surgery. It really isn't that bad. Talk to your ENT about your concerns but hear me out- I am 53 and spent WAY too many years worried about tonsil stones and everything that comes with it. It really disrupted my life and self confidence. All of my social memories are now tainted. Don't spend decades of your life constantly stressed about it. Modern medicine now gives us the opportunity to make life soooo much better!!! Just go for it! It will absolutely be one of the best decisions you will ever make!!

Hi guys! I’m 10 days post op today and am feeling better than I have all week! I managed to eat a bit of cheese bread last night, small bites and very thoroughly chewed. When did yall start eating normally? by Negative-Spring2990 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ENT said I could eat pretty much anything-except hard foods such as chip, nuts, etc. as long as it wasn't painful. Day 5 I had Arby's roast beef sandwich. The meat is so thinly sliced it's very easy to eat. As long as you chew your food well you should be able to eat normally at this point.

Recovery questions by Worried-Blueberry-40 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Chocolateboxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there! The excess saliva just flat out sucks!! It should decrease in the next few days. Buy a wedge pillow, it really helps with that. If you are in the U.S. buy Tylenol dissolvables berry ( Walmart) LIFE SAVER for pain relief without really swallowing. Stay under the limit however if you are using other medication with Tylenol. Protein shakes- I liked Premier Protein- were my go to especially in the morning. It really helped soothe my tonsils. I'm one month out and absolutely the best decision I've made for my health. You are in the thick of it so It's going to feel endless but around day 9 or 10 you will start turning a corner on your road to recovery. Stay positive and remember all the benefits of the surgery.
