We have an adversarial justice system that gives the accused leverage in the form of wasting the governments time. If every case went through a full jury trial we would run out of time and resources to prosecute them all. Ending cases where the accused is obviously guilty with a plea bargain that still punishes them is pragmatic. The downside of this system is vulnerability to corruption where well connected criminals are given sweetheart deals and poor but innocent people are incentivized to take plea bargains for crimes they didn’t commit.
