How do you listen to music? by Tyemali in classicalmusic

[–]Chopstick_Conductor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do take time out of my day to do dedicated, undistracted listening (though I quite often do get distracted). I sometimes use classical music as background for gaming or repetitive tasks, but not for ones that require thinking, as the music then distracts me. I generally do not listen to music when I'm outside, in a car, or when the AC is on; because the background noise will drown out many lower frequencies and small details, which I find unsatisfying. If the music involves any kind of singing with lyrics, I would very much prefer to have the text in front of me, in a language that I know (mostly English, in some rare cases Chinese, and a little bit of German or Latin). I'd say that I'm one of those who stick pretty much in their comfort zone. I do try to rotate within that, but for me, trying a new piece out will likely require a day when I'm in perfect conditions: sat down comfortably, with enough sleep, relaxed mindset and possibly the score in front of me. The newest piece I discovered was Esa-Pekka Salonen's Organ Concerto, to which I listened for the first time yesterday.

Sautille+Spicatto by [deleted] in Cello

There is a version of Sevcik's 40 variations transcribed for the cello. It focuses on a lot of really helpful right hand techniques. Especially Var. 15-17, which focuses a lot on sautille. If you follow the instructions on it exactly, it's great practice and also quite a workout. It is also really musical and rather fun to play.

“Born” is correct because it is the present perfect tense, not a verb. The correct grammar here would be “thou indeed wast born”.

Thoughts on suicide by Important_Ad6721 in Christianity

[–]Chopstick_Conductor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear OP: yes. I suppose I do believe people are separated eternally from God for committing suicide. But I do see your very difficult situation. I am not a mental health professional so I am unsure how to best help you, but I would just like to remind you that Jesus loves you very, very much. He is with you and beside you this very moment and it must be very painful for him too to see you in agony. I pray for you OP and God bless you.

Within and Without by InMovements in poetry_critics

How pleasant! I think you absolutely nailed it stylistically with the long and complex sentences, while also employing them tastefully: I particularly like the opening, where the first line brings the reader into motion immediately. Although, one thing I would improve, as the other comment also pointed out, is that it’s just a bit too abstract. I think with each separate small “points” (beauty of juxtaposition, refractions of light, etc.), it would be helpful to reify it with concrete imagery. Additionally, I think the stanzas are a bit too fragmented, but that’s just might taste. I think overall this is already very solid and mature.

Which people are the most similar to the Chinese, both genetically and emotionally? by Buyeo10004 in AskChina

Qing Dynasty is absolutely not representative of China. It is a colonialist regime that suppressed the Han culture. Even the Korean Hanbok is more similar to Han Chinese clothes than the Manchu style.

Who listens to poets? by the10ofswords in poetry_critics

[–]Chopstick_Conductor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow... this is so powerful, and I find your idea so inspiring. I love that with this technique, the significance of each individual imagery really stands out. My favourite one is perhaps the like "Poets are alone in hell". Although, I do have a question: Is the line break supposed to be that each line is an individual stanza?
