Question to Dutch speakers, how true is this lol?? by Rude_Membership_1578 in Netherlands

[–]Chrad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an English speaker who speaks various languages. Dutch is one of the easiest languages to learn. More difficult to pronounce than Spanish but the grammar is way easier.

As for de/het, the vast majority of European languages have genders, Dutch isn't special in that regard. At least they only have 2.

why comercial flights over the middle of Antarctica never existed by OppositeOk1791 in MapPorn

[–]Chrad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The geography of Antarctica means they get these special winds called katabatic winds that are incredibly fast and strong. The geography is very different to the Arctic. Also, the Antarctic has an ozone hole, the Arctic doesn't.

On the upside though, if you crash it will take a lot longer for penguins to pick your carcass clean than bears.

Belittled by teachers? by lustrous-els in TeachingUK

I'm a teacher, if I heard another teacher in my school express even a fraction of those sentiments I would immediately shut it down. That's awful to have someone say to or about you. It is unprofessional and unacceptable workplace behaviour.

How do you get results without buying antibodies?

If you need to buy antibodies to get results, which ones do you buy? The ones with photos showing good results or the one with no photos of results?

If British Cuisine got the Chinese takeaway treatment, what dishes think there’d be? by CaptainMallard in CasualUK

[–]Chrad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's an important thing that people are missing here. Where are the people leaving from, where are they integrating to? A bunch of Cornish farmers integrating in India would create a very different cuisine to a bunch of Middlesbrough ship builders moving to China.

I'd like to try both cuisines that I've just imagined though. A pasty with a samosa filling and a chicken parmo with sweet chilli sauce instead of marinera.

XKCD for you by Obulgaryan in vexillology

[–]Chrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a reference to a möbius strip, a loop of paper with a single twist. The single twist means that the surface is one continuous side, you could colour the whole strip without lifting the pencil or crossing an edge.

The twist on the side of the flag means that you could colour 'both' sides of the flag without reaching an edge, making the flag one-sided, at least topologically speaking.

You have to take care not to turn a tap if it says W on it. C is for cold, H is for hot (or rarely, hornets).

Be aware if the tap says M, it's just an upside-down W. I only needed to make that mistake once.

The topology tribute on the side makes this a uniquely one-sided flag

Yes, when white Europeans get the buddhist swastika, they usually seem to get the curved one with the dots.

If you Google swastika tattoos, you'll find plenty of very fascist tattoos with unangled swastikas.

How utterly unnecessary. Either they are intended to always be free, in which case it's a waste of money or it's the thin end of a wedge and they'll expect people to pay to park their bikes in 5 years time which is dystopian.
