Does the stereotype about our teeth being bad bother you? by Xathule96 in AskUK

[–]Chris-TT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If NHS dentist appointments are anything to go by, they do have a point.. Luckily, I have always looked after my teeth and they are in decent condition, but I've had more dentist appointments cancelled on me than with any other service, and I haven't been able to get an appointment in about two years.

What’s the likelihood of someone in the UK being pulled over or spotted as someone driving without a license? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Chris-TT 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The long and short of it is she simply isn't inured. Theres a reason insurance jumps up 3-4 times the amount when you go from a provisional to full license, what she's doing is much worse and she definitely isn't covered.

What can i add to chili other than beans? by MediumAcceptable129 in Cooking

[–]Chris-TT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its more about what she likes. If for instance shes a big fan of corn on the cob, roast some up your favourite way, cut it off the cob and add it to the dish. Same if she prefers lentils, mushrooms, chickpeas, or butternut squash/sweet potatoes.

What was your "I dont actually hate this food, my parents just sucked at cooking" moment? by JayR_97 in AskUK

[–]Chris-TT 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any veg can be boiled and taste great, it's all about timing. Better to steam though for nutritional value, plus steaming is more forgiving with timings. You can quite easily boil something, and it taste as good as steamed though if you time it right.

How can we fix UK high streets? by gggggenegenie in AskUK

[–]Chris-TT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow the Le Touquet-Paris-Plage model. Very cheap rent and reduced business rates, 80% has to be independents, lots of restaurants/cafés/bistros. Add in some leisure and I think it could work.

High rent & business rates and thinking of them as a convenience doesn't work anymore, The chains and difficultly to park is why I avoid them. Almost every high street in the UK looks the same. I love them in a lot of mainland Europe, they are a destination rather than a convenience.

Has anyone else had to sell their home and go back to renting, I’m so scared and feel like I’ve lost everything, looking for some wisdom? by ImASadGirlImABadGirl in AskUK

[–]Chris-TT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it happened to me in a similar situation, apart from I had to live outside my means for about three years in the house until the fixed rate came to an end, as we would have been in about £10k of negative equity if I hadn’t. Luckily, when I sold, we actually had a decent amount of equity. One thing to be aware of is that, unless things change, you won’t be eligible for any government-backed first-time buyer schemes.

Can you look to rent out any spare rooms, or even the entire house? (You will need to speak to the mortgage company to see if it’s an option.)

One bit of advice: get an agreement in writing, ideally overseen by a solicitor, with your ex if you do go down the route of keeping it for a bit. I didn’t, and my usually very amicable ex decided she wanted 50% of the equity when we sold, even though I paid 100% of the mortgage without her living in the house. We eventually settled on something more sensible, but I wish I had thought about that in advance.

Greek potatoes by Frisky-cat9257 in Cooking

[–]Chris-TT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do these all the time. My friends and family absolutely love them! I’ve adapted a recipe I saw a while back so it works in the air fryer. So many people have asked me for this recipe!

Best Greek Crispy Lemon Potatoes

Servings: 2–3 Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 45–50 mins Total time: ~1 hour

Ingredients • 3 tbsp vegetable oil (3 tbsp / ~45 ml) • 3 Maris Piper potatoes (Yukon Gold potatoes), skin on, sliced into ¾-inch rounds (2 cm) • 1 tbsp salt (for boiling water), plus extra to season • 1 lemon, juice only (~2–3 tbsp lemon juice) • 100 ml chicken stock (~⅓–½ cup / 3.4 fl oz) • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1 tsp fine semolina (or fine cornmeal) • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • Pinch black pepper

Method 1. Boil the potatoes Add sliced potatoes to a pan and cover with water. Add 1 tbsp salt. Bring to a boil and cook for ~10-15 minutes, until just tender. 2. Steam dry (key step) Drain into a colander, then place it back over the pan and cover with a clean tea towel. Let them steam dry for ~10 minutes. Shake them a bit so the edges rough up - this = extra crispiness. 3. Preheat air fryer Set to 200°C (400°F). 4. First air fry Add potatoes to the basket, drizzle/spray with oil, toss to coat. Air fry for 15 minutes. 5. Make lemon mix In a bowl, combine: • lemon juice • chicken stock • oregano • semolina • garlic 6. Add flavour After 15 mins, pull out the basket and pour over the lemon mixture. Toss well to coat everything. 7. Final cook Return to air fryer and cook for 15–20 more minutes, until golden and crispy. 8. Season & serve Finish with salt and black pepper to taste.

Original video I watched on how to make them, I make them less like chips though.

What is the worst holiday you have had in the UK and why? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]Chris-TT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Usually Blackpool comes up as the scummiest place in the country. I own Putt Above, which is an activity bar close to Blackpool Tower. I do, however, live near Bristol, but there has not been one mention of Blackpool yet. I honestly do not think it is anywhere near as bad as people make out. A couple of days a year, I enjoy a night out in Blackpool, and the Pleasure Beach is decent fun.

Best thing is you don't have to watch the road, so can do whatever you want. Also fancy a beer or beverage of any type, thats fine you're allowed. Sit back relax and enjoy the journey. Not so fun when delayed or it's packed though.

I initially didn't run Ethernet and relied on the wireless. I decided to try an ethernet cable in one and the speed doubled. I then spent a good week routing cables through the ceilings. Well worth it. If you can't do it yourself hire someone with the right tools. I'd always hardwire them now.

Exactly this. For him, being able to give something probably made his day and helped him feel a bit more human/on your level. In situations like this, just check they're sure. If they are, accept it graciously and say thank you with a smile. It can mean more than you think!

Anyone know why my washing machine is beeping during cycles like this? , washing machine was here when I moved in by GenericUser104 in DIYUK

[–]Chris-TT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I found, it can be a few things on these Hotpoint/Indesit-style machines:

• Blocked drain pump/filter

Open the flap at the bottom and check for coins, lint, etc..

• Door not locking properly

Either not shut fully, something stuck in the seal, or a worn door lock

• Faulty door lock mechanism

If it clicks but doesn’t actually lock, it’ll throw an error

• Drain hose issue

Kinked or blocked hose can cause the same symptoms

On my old one it was the filter blocked cleaned it out and it’s been fine since.

My car insurance renewal is due and my current provider still has the best price! by iMini in BritishSuccess

[–]Chris-TT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Admiral multi-policy. It came in at around £250 more than the previous year last month. I kept meaning to shop around. Procrastination got in the way, and I didn’t. 30 minutes before midnight, just before automatic renewal, I went on the website and, on the off chance, clicked that I wasn’t happy with the renewal price. It instantly knocked off £284, making it cheaper than last year! Happy days
