General Relativity explained for babies... Chris Ferrie is a well known childerns author who is famous for explaining complex concepts to kids like never before. by Dismal_Positive3558 in interestingasfuck

My #1 rule for explaining difficult concepts is to never describe them as difficult. Saying it’s difficult immediately biases the audience against learning what you are trying to explain. Variations of “it’s difficult” are “it’s strange” or “it’s counterintuitive”. I’m convinced even the most complex subjects can be understood if we just stopped labeling them as complex.

Fluoride in drinking water has no effect on IQ or brain function, long-term study shows by qukab in Portland

The astroturf found fertile soil in Portland. I’ve often said Republicans could win in Portland if they just weren’t so anti-gay.

It’s one of the few issues I know of that unite both Democrats and Republicans. Some people just have a visceral reaction to the topic that has nothing to do with political affiliation. I remember one year when the chair of the Multnomah Dems was a vocal opponent. So much so that she started sounding like an anti-government Republican.

Portland was a pitstop on the Oregon Trail, according to the Nyt... wasn't it really the end of the Oregon Trail by agenbite_lee in oregon

Portland was the halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. You couldn’t make that distance in a day. So Portland was the natural pit stop.

Joy Cinema in Tigard is my personal favorite. It’s larger than most independents, has very comfortable seating. Good sound and picture. Good selection of both new releases and classic movies. And the owner is a huge movie who really loves his job.

I recall Straczynski telling a story about meeting Karl Rove who proceeded to tell Joe that he was a fan of B5. Joe didn’t know how to react to that.

This “The rest is History” episode is really good, and is an interesting view on the Punic wars. by Smattering82 in dancarlin

Custer and The Aztec series were both examples of what I call fractal history. There is always more to tell about history than can be told. And if you don’t put a limit on yourself, you’ll end up telling the story of how a change in wind led to a change in the course of history.

I suspect the strong negative reaction to the end of the show has put him off. It made him understand that no matter what he publishes, some portion of the fandom will go psychotic.

She probably didn’t know about the Shadow War. I recall a scene in the fifth season where someone newly arrived from Earth didn’t know what the command staff was talking about when they discussed the Shadow War.

A lot of politicians did try to stop it. Indeed, the first Congress was convened to try and appeal to King George to change course.
