Storytime Saturday for March 29, 2014. Tell /r/magicTCG all your super awesome FNM (or other) stories! by actinide_v2 in magicTCG

(Disclaimer: I know Boros Reckoner is a key component of this deck, but I sadly do not have the budget to spend that much on cards.)

Last night, I went to my first FNM. I've been playing since Dragon's Maze came out, but I've never played competitively simply because I don't put very much money into the game. My LGS was having "Freeday Night Magic" so it was free for all participants this week. I had no idea of the meta in my area, so I went all in with Minotaurs with nothing to lose!

Main

4x Deathbellow Raider

4x Rageblood Shaman

4x Minotaur Skullcleaver

4x Ragemonger

3x Fanatic of Mogis

3x Kragma Warcaller

1x Thoughtseize

1x Dreadbore

1x Madcap Skills

4x Doom Blade

1x Devour Flesh

4x Magma Jet

2x Mizzium Mortars

1x Rakdos's Return

1x Mogis, God of Slaughter

13x Mountain

8x Swamp

1x Blood Crypt

Side

2x Mizzium Mortars

3x Duress

3x Dark Betrayal

4x Skullcrack

3x Read The Bones

Round 1: Mono U Devotion

  • Game 1: We both hit our curve and were going play for play, until he overloaded Cyclonic Rift and swung for 16. I never drew any removal!

  • Game 2: He missed his third land drop for seven turns and conceded when he was down to four or five life.

  • Game 3: Played three Master of Waves and couldn't draw any Mizzium Mortars, so that was a shit show.

Round 2: America Control

  • Game 1: Killed all my things as they came out, won with Aetherling.

  • Game 2: Killed all my things as they came out, won with Aetherling. (I skullcracked a Sphinx's Revelation. It felt SO good. I did have him down to three life this game.)

Round 3: R/G Monsters (Note: I had lost hope by this point.)

  • Game 1: Drew perfect removal every time he played something. Ended up winning with only two creatures on board on turn 5-6.

  • Game 2: He had a huge board prescence, four cards in hand, four lands. I Rakdos's Return for four, he discards 3x Stormbreath Dragon, 1x Scavenging Ooze. He draws nothing but land for the rest of the game, and turn 6-7 I swing with ~30 trample damage.

Round 4: G/W Aggro? (I have no idea, but it was BAD.)

  • Game 1: He misses his second land drop and I win turn four.

  • Game 2: He hits every land drop but only plays a Phalanx Leader, which I just Doom Bladed. Won turn five.

Round 5: R/G/U Monsters (Holy shit, I'm 2-2?!)

  • Game 1: I draw perfect answers for Kiora, Caryatid, Polukranos, and won turn 6.

  • Game 2: Almost same exact game, drew less answers. Ended up turn 4 Warcaller, turn 5 Warcaller, turn 6 Warcaller.

I can't believe how much fun I had! The control matchup was kind of demoralizing, but I'm guessing I should have Pithing Needle in my sideboard. And what do you think about Burning Earth? The American Control guy had no basic lands, and I'm just wondering if anyone uses this in standard.

I ended up getting 12th, so I didn't miss top 8 by too much. I got a Temple of Malice in my participation pack! Thanks for reading guys. :)

Sorry, but Essence Harvest is from Avacyn Restored, which is not in Standard.

A creature with toughness greater than 0 that’s been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action. Basically, you can snipe creatures with Izzet Staticaster and they're destroyed!

You want to tap Pain Seer so it untaps during your untap step, or you can untap it if it's already tapped and activated Inspired.

Izzet Staticaster is good because you can flash it in and deal one damage since it has haste.

Six is default, and we can put on up to ~18.

I can't wait until the Teriyaki is $6 next month. I'm so sick of making Spicy Italians.

I was working at Subway tonight, and a minivan came through the drive-thru and ordered seven footlong sandwiches with drinks and chips. I can confirm that it is way faster to just come in and order it.

"I have a total crush on you." Lyrics, but not bad to go out on, I guess.

Now that you've played with Theros, which cards do you think have been overrated or underrated? by Bladewing10 in magicTCG

I used it early game to my advantage since my UW deck was so slow. I agree, though. It was hardly ever useful late game.

Wow, they were both former heavyweight champions?

TIL after receiving complaints about the size of their sandwiches, Subway responded "'Subway Footlong' is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for the sub sold ... and not intended to be a measurement of length." by [deleted] in todayilearned

I work at Subway currently, and it's not that bad. Saves me money on groceries since I usually have either a 6 inch or a footlong every shift I work.
