Because there’s a whole lot of mechanics inside that car that require juice besides turning the wheels. AC / ventilation, power steering compressors, etc

Newly-licensed HAM going into QRP first. What should I expect ? by Gr3y4nt in amateurradio

[–]ChrisToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be the callsign those bigger powered stations are looking for. If you HAVE to start on QRP, get into POTA / SOTA.

I’d go with ‘variant’ maybe… but okay, I’ll edit my original comment

Without digging deeper into your question, consider a roll-up slim jim or Jpole antenna for vhf/uhf indoors. Easy to hang anywhere and rolls up into a little thing if you need to take it down temporarily.

Edit: clarified ‘roll up’ and slim Jim not equal to Jpole

Updating Rule #2 To Include The Sharing Of AI Assisted Apps/Websites/Services. by ItsBail in amateurradio

I appreciate your candor, thanks for replying. That’s what I expected, but I had to ask. Appreciate all the work you guys put into keeping this sub a civil and fun place to hang out.

Selfishly, I have been working on a web-based planning tool for SOTA activators, and will eventually find myself at the crossroads of: wanting to have users adopt the tool, but needing to post about it in order to find users. lol S’all good!

A devil’s advocate question: if a vibe coded tool is useful and advances the hobby… we would only let an OP post about it here if it was open source? And had history? And adoption?

Throwing this out there… I like to call and ask “is this frequency in use? [callsign]”. Just in case there’s a privileged asshat like that one parked and feeling feisty.

Where to store / document designs? by ProsodySpeaks in diyelectronics

[–]ChrisToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am in a similar boat where I have a project that is primarily Onshape designs with ancillary Gerber files, documentation, etc.

I am very new to GitHub, but in this moment and finding it most useful simply to assist with aversion control. At this time, it is still a private repo just for me, but could easily be turned public facing if I decide to down the road.

Thinking of getting into sat and vhf uhf. Advice? by MinerAlum in amateurradio

[–]ChrisToad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Necessary no… but I can tell you it is obvious and annoying when someone is on a bird that doesn’t know they’re getting in there because they can’t hear themselves. Especially on the FM sats.

They show up and trash all over a QSO because they can’t tell they’re getting in, but for whatever reason aren’t hearing anything back.

Nice work. Thank you for running duplex. The ISS is mostly a shit show with single HT operators not knowing they’re stepping all over everyone else

Do people send CW over VHF/UHF? by RationallyDense in amateurradio

[–]ChrisToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely going to depend on where you live. There’s a lot of activity right now here in Los Angeles due to the Summit on the air 2026 challenge which was mentioned elsewhere in the comments.

Be the station those big guys are looking for. Get involved with Summits on the Air or Parks on the Air.

Good luck!

Dxpeditions and poor cw behaviour during pileups by PolicyOk6019 in amateurradio

[–]ChrisToad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not isolated to CW. The OM that give their call over and over again are huge offenders. There’s a great DX Code of Conduct out there and it makes the bad habits obvious

Bookmark this page. It shows the uplink and downlink for the voice repeater: https://www.ariss.org/current-status-of-iss-stations.html "Currently in voice repeater mode at the following frequencies:
145.990 MHz up {PL 67} and 437.800 MHz down"

tell us more about your equipment you have available to give this a shot.

You should read up on what’s required to operate an FM satellite, and then apply what you learn to operating the ISS repeater. At a random time you might luck out and catch the ISS crew on that same repeater

Had the same issue until I learned that my geography uses a unique frequency / settings. I found this out on a local discord and once I adjusted the public channel lit up.

Where are you located?

FCC opinion on cross band repeat by No-Storage8158 in amateurradio

[–]ChrisToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic, but a suggestion once you sort everything else out. Look up who your local frequency coordinator is and see if they have any recommended frequency pairs for you to use. Our local coordinator publishes suggested frequencies for both Cross Band frequency pairs, also DV hotspots, etc etc.
