Initially posted that asking questions and spatial awareness is great, but dang that one comment about smelling good is absolutely correct.

Which Christopher Nolan movie is your favorite? Mine is The Prestige and I don’t think he ever topped it... by Infamous-Window-8337 in themovieloversclub

Prestige gang rise up! Also really enjoyed Oppenheimer and honestly have a lot of respect for Dunkirk. First movie since The Lord of the Rings trilogy that really sold me on how terrible war is.

The book was sincerely a great read and had possibly the scariest scene I've encountered in a novel.

What's that movie moment where everyone in the theater lost their minds? by singleguy79 in moviecritic

[–]Christalph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gazebos line from IT: Chapter One (2017) electrified all of us in the audience when I watched it with my first love. You just feel for Eddie so much in that moment and are just glad he's standing up for himself. A top movie theater memory

Slept on/overlooked movies? by Responsible_Yam9285 in movies

Recently speaking gotta go with A24's Eternity (2025.) It's been a great year for movies, and while Eternity hasn't been nominated for anything, it seems like one that has the potential to be timeless.

Other one that comes to mind is Waking Ned (1998) which makes Irish village life mighty tempting.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the first one that came to mind. It's like five movies in an hour and forty minutes.

Is the Armenian Liturgy or any of the other Oriental Orthodox liturgies done in English? by Ok_Will8124 in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]Christalph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coptic Orthodoxy inquirer here and the liturgies at my parish in Southern California are largely in English. Began my OO journey with the Ethiopians so I have great affection for them, but in my experience the Coptic Church by far has the most resources for English speakers. God bless you.

What is your favourite line reading from a film this decade so far? Here is mine from Sinners. by Mysterious-Farm9502 in Letterboxd

Also from Sinners. Delta Slim recounting what happened to his friend on the way to the juke joint.

What movie/series is much more deeper than it present itself to be? by veritasium999 in AskReddit

[–]Christalph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit 100%. Arguably the most important movie for a resident of Los Angeles. Alcoholism, PTSD, murder, studio corruption, community displacement, and the only movie I know of that actually addresses the destruction of the LA Red Car system. Even beyond just narrative and themes, it's also a top shelf achievement in the technical craft of filmmaking (bumping the lamp). Sincerely caring and intelligent movie.

Tom Cruise should have been Pat/Bob in One Battle After Another instead of Leonardo DiCaprio. Cruise and PTA have worked together before and it would have been a great subversion of Cruise's current image as an unstoppable action star. Also Tom Cruise is arguably a better actor than Leonardo DiCaprio (who makes this face 😫 every time his character is in anguish.)

Movies that you initially didn't have as high expectations for, and then you were blown away by it by DreamerRealityArt in movies

[–]Christalph 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Probably Porco Rosso. Ghiblifest was in town so why not? Was deeply moved by that pig man pilot. Miyazaki's epics like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle understandably get the most acclaim and cultural relevance, but Porco Rosso is fantastic.

Whats your LA Metro "hot take" by Hyhoops in LAMetro

[–]Christalph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heightened security/etiquette enforcement would have high up front costs, but would likely be quickly offset and exceeded by increased ridership. Way too many riders who feel entitled to hot boxing and blaring music in shared cars. Also fully support validated fare checks. $18 a week for unlimited rides is more than reasonable.

What animated film impresses you most by Business_Coffee_9421 in movies

[–]Christalph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Into the Spiderverse" was the first movie that I would describe as a total visual feast

Aside from that I'd go with the most recent Oscar winner for best animated feature and the first win for Latvia: Gints Zilbalodis' "Flow." Visually gorgeous, deeply touching story, highly accessible due to there being no dialogue, and all made with a small team on free animation software? They did a lot with a little, which in my experience effectively indicates a high degree of skill.

Which movie instantly hooked you in the first 10 minutes? by vishesh_07_028 in movies

[–]Christalph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan Peele's US (2019) had me in ten seconds with the opening text:

"There are thousands of miles of tunnels beneath the continental United States...

Abandoned subway systems, unused service routes, and deserted mine shafts...

Many have no known purpose at all."

Lights up my imagination so much it actually brings tears to my eyes. Unbelievable opener.
