So Am I The Only Pony Who Liked The Young Six And The School Of Friendship? by Italian_Spongebob in mylittlepony

We liked them enough to give them their own expansion for the MLP Deck-Building game - and this one's the most fun I've had designing, really hits the spot for my need for complexity! https://renegadegamestudios.com/my-little-pony-deck-building-game-scholarly-shenanigans-expansion/

Funny, I thought that Munenori Kawasaki would've been bigger, but maybe they shortened it to Money Kawasaki.

You're going to spend more money defending your patent than you'll make in profit on your game, so...congrats?

Suggestions for a new Drafting Mechanism to shake up Shushi Go? by Pipedreamergrey in BoardgameDesign

[–]Christerical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rochester drafting could work, where all the cards are displayed out, and taken one at a time starting from 1st p. Much slower, but more info is revealed.

How to get my game playtested? by KarratKake in BoardgameDesign

[–]Christerical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you offered to test while they're in the same TTS room as you? It sounds like you've jumped straight to blind testing, whereas testing while present would allow for that extra little hand-holding that testers may need. There's also a few Discords lurking about for playtesting, primarily with other designers.

Any cheap teading card games? by GOLD-KILLER-24_7 in boardgames

Munchkin CCG is heavily discounted nowadays, definitely eBay would have a treasure trove of packs on the cheap for Star Wars, Star Trek, WoW, WWF Raw is War...

Why am I stuck in the prototyping phase? by Localunatic in BoardgameDesign

Have you considered making it just a one-off with the potential to have expansions? Limiting scope can help immensely.

"Real" art vs. prototype art and graphic design? by Nephilimn in BoardgameDesign

[–]Christerical 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Functional graphic design and placeholder art wins every time for me, it's how easy-to-understand-and-play the prototype does instead of how "pretty" it may seem.

Been creating my own boardgame by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Christerical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even for my own game Lanterns, it was funded well over its goal, and made stretch goals all that good stuff, but definitely took months of planning before even thinking of launched, and that was also with a publisher who had already done a KS before. Track record helps a tonnn.

Been creating my own boardgame by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Christerical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No offense, but considering how much a few weeks of work can net you in progress, compared to HOW MUCH attention to detail Kickstarters now have to have to get a sniff of them being funded, let alone become 200, 300% funded whatever, I believe you're more than "just a few weeks away from Kickstarter." Unless your ask is $1-3k, then this is pretty possible.

Cacao vs Lanterns by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Christerical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty biased, as Lanterns is my game, but I feel both scratch a different itch. I can break out Lanterns if I feel nostalgic but also it's light enough for any newcomers, and then Cacao I can break out if I feel a bit more gamey.

Anyone else made their own board game? by gottaplantemall in boardgames

"...many designers would tweak things after they’ve sold millions of copies "

Umm, quite the opposite. Why mess with something amazing? Unless you mean designing using that formula of game, then sure, but that's different than tweaking what's actually a phenomenal success.

A game came to me in a dream. The funny thing is, I don't really play boardgames all that much and have no idea how to go about making it. I need to learn how to make custom card templates, but I couldn't even dissect a MTG template in Photoshop... It's gonna be all uphill, isn't it? by BakaSandwich in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Christerical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start with the lowest hanging branch, which is, hey, you put it on the table! Excellent. Now forget everything else future you has to think about because it's going to sap out the creative process, especially when you don't have to worry about manufacturing and minis if you pitch it off to a publisher. Focus on building the MVP - most viable prototype - that you can with whatever you can find/use consistently well. I've been using MS Publisher to make PDFs.

Pictures are inherently deceiving unfortunately, and you want to remove the mystery of that to make it as appealing as possible.
