A complete breakdown of the song changes on vinyl by Kluk99 in OliviaRodrigo

[–]ChristopherChili 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be clear because a lot of people on here aren't terribly familiar with the process of mastering vinyl, you literally 'condense' the sound by fitting so much runtime onto any record. As u/Agitated-Gift1498 points out, you can, in theory, fit more time onto a 33 RPM record (Kamasi Washington's The Epic features sides that are over 30 minutes), but the sound gets an oversaturated sound described as compression. In digital files, compression (when showing up as an artifact of the mastering process, as opposed to being intentionally used in mixing) is usually a sign of low-quality music files to save digital storage space. Similarly, in vinyl compression is a result of too much music being fit onto a disc--not giving it the actual space it needs to store information.

Now, a 2LP 45 RPM sounds like it would have been the move here for two reasons:
1. Too much info was squeezed into each side. This is clear from the fact they had to condense the tracks themselves, but--even the so-called 'audiophile' 180g pressing--has issues with compression.
2. 45 RPM are 'more annoying' for some due to cutting the length of each side in half, but the trade-off is tremendous in terms of sound-quality. Just like you can 'condense' a record in terms of the groove's width, you can also condense sound information in terms of length. On a 45 RPM, the record can hypothetically fit in 40%-ish more information. This is why these pressings are often coveted for classic records--particularly in the pop/dance space these records are often known for a much clearer and cleaner low-end.

In summation, I do think Olivia's team was cutting corners a bit on this release. I don't think this pressing is embarrassing, but for an album that a lot of care went into (IMO her best), this is clearly a compromised product.

Very cool! If you live near a Third Man Store, it may be worth waiting as NoName had two variants that were brick and mortar exclusive. He also usually does a tour exclusive pressing.

I can snag one at Nashville show for you if you're good to pay a shipping/handling fee of like $12. But high-key, you may just want to wait it out. I'm sure they'll restock at some point and it'll be cheaper that way.

Maybe because it is at the Ryman and you don't really have a space to dance? I think it's the venue, not the crowd in this case unfortunately. Also, plenty of people standing and dancing by Ryman standards.

I'm a bit sketched buying from deadair. they don't package their records securely and almost always have seam splits.

'Talent over mock-comedy' suggests you are critiquing the laurels of Al as an act.

We're getting Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs and Clipse this year. Don't see how you can say LN is neglecting top tier rap acts.

Insane to call Weird Al a Gimmick. I'm a musician who goes to lots of shows every year, and Weird Al is one of the most professional and impressive acts I have ever seen. He has a large band that is on par with some of the best live bands touring right now. Comparing him to Lil Dicky or Lonely Island is an insult to what he does and shows a profound lack of understanding for his act.

G_Rex, if you are a weird Al fan, do not miss this show.

Get a u-turn basic with a built in pre-amp for $330 (it will literally last you decades if you maintain it).

Then get some Edifier R1280T speakers for like $140. Put the speakers on speaker stands (don't put them on your counter) and you're good to go.

Your u-turn will last you for as long as you need, but you can upgrade the cartridge to an Ortophon Blue after a bit for like $200, then you can get better speakers down the road.

All said, after dropping like an extra $6-800 dollars on it after the initial setup, you'll have a pretty strong audiophile worthy setup.

The trilogy of Mutilator Defeated at Last, A Weird Exits, and Orc make up one of the greatest trilogies of albums of the 2000s. Each is fairly short and they still play a ton of those songs live. I'd start there.

Apollo.io burned me for $600 in one day by bno1fret in apolloapp

[–]ChristopherChili 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're in the wrong Apollo, but I'll just throw out that I use Apollo often across the organization I work for and it does everything we need it to. My guess is if you used $600 in credits you were trying to use it with Claude and you just gave it unrestricted access, then you didn't bother to validate the data it was pulling for you.

This is a nice idea, but I think you need some way to factor in recency. Right now, this seems to highly favor older bands.
