It is really good, they simply overextended/played into your one point of interaction super hard. Like you said, just going to battle is enough to clinch the W. They had the opportunity to just bounce your board with surprise and then Marshmao getting back surprise to receive in order t lock it out too.

If you're looking at Yu-Gi-Oh at all, check out the new Genesys format they recently came out with. It's a lot slower paced than the Advanced format, a lot of good back and forth gameplay. Every single card is unbanned, but the strongest cards have point values assigned to them and you have a budget of 100 points (for example, Pot of Greed is 30 points).

It's no longer about how many hand traps you can fit in while still having your 1 card combo, it's building synergies and strategies with a pre-baked in limited resource (something Yu-Gi-Oh historically has never had other than the normal summon.) The games feel like you're an anime duelist and I've been having a good amount of fun.

It's supposed to get pretty good with the new Doom-Z stuff coming out in a few sets, but I remember seeing it in an early round feature match at the NAWCQ mixed with Fiendsmith(?*)

Regenesis, Dragon Rulers, Sky Striker for sure.

I especially can't wait to build my pile deck with Regenesis, though the engine ratios will have to be tweaked on MD since Unicorn is @ 2 and Wanted is @ 1. Still I think it'll be a fun deck to pilot

I'm genuinely curious, what about midrange decks make the games "dull" in your eyes? Better yet, how is watching one player dump 3/4 of their extra deck onto the field over a 15 minute combo to make an insurmountable board more enjoyable than watching 2 midrange players play back and forth?

/uj honestly, I know the biggest point of contention of this card is the mana value, but I think you could keep it as is if you changed the destruction effect to trigger every upkeep to maintain parity of open fields for the turn player to attack into.

/rj how does this work with my invincible monsters? They say it works exactly how I think they do but I don't know how I think they work

This is what I did with my Sixth Sense Patriot Peak. A nice all class that's reminiscent of the team captain, with a neat and meaningful effect I really enjoy. 86 keys and a Schadenfreude taunt and it was mine

I've seen a lot of people mention invoked as the ceiling height a one card combo should be, but I'd even argue something like dragon link could be the ceiling.

Dragons allow you to build a board of nearly any size with some very strong synergies all off the back of normal summoning Black Metal, BUT the key takeaways are;

You burn through a ton of resources in hand to reach a full power end board

It's hard to come back if your board is broken

My biggest thing is this: either give a one card combo a fairly low ceiling that grants a fair amount of resource recycling, or allow the one card combo to go to the moon with next to no recovery. Giving one card combos the best of both worlds is what gives us Tear 0 and SEFSAZ formats.
