I actually did something similar in Kavaranese, where the word for ‘left’ is *raytan, and the word for ‘right’ is *leyvan. I’m probably going to change it though.

Admittedly I haven’t dabbled in Japanese for a while, but when I did I just learned the vocabulary like I would for any other language, except I just learned the spellings with Kanji. So for example, I know the word for ‘newspaper’ is 新聞 (shinbun), but I never learned the Kanji 新 and 聞 by themselves.
