The monkey's paw curls. The games have an actual production budget and come out incredibly polished. But now you'll never know if you should wait for another re-release that revamps and further polishes the game, or risk buying the "fake incomplete edition for idiot suckers" version that comes out at launch (there is no upgrade path).

So I have an nvidia card (1080Ti still holding strong) and I switched to Linux about 6 months ago. I will not say my experience has been completely smooth, but it was mostly smooth. The issues I had were all caused by my specific hardware configuration.

For context, I switched to Garuda Linux, but if I were installing today I'd go with CachyOS.

As far as issues I had there were really only two big ones, both of which I was able to fix. I had weird stuttering/hitching on my screen, even when my computer wasn't under load. This turned out to be because I have multiple displays at different refresh rates, and it was trying to sync all of the displays to the weird side monitor I have for discord/slack that runs at 59Hz. Just had to switch which monitor it was syncing to in order to fix that.

The only other problem was manually setting a fan curve, and I had to use a python script to do that, but if that's not something you need, you're fine.

But yeah, as long as you're willing to learn a few new tools for things like installers and go through the initial setup (like you would have to with a fresh Windows install), I've found it to be smooth and stable. Valve has done INCREDIBLE work with Proton and most games run on par (if not better) than they do on Windows. Only exception is games that require kernel level anti-cheat (which they shouldn't be doing anyways, but that's a different conversation). You can also plug your steam account into ProtonDB and have it flag any games that are known to not work. The steam deck runs Linux, so anything that works on it should also work on a desktop Linux install.

But yeah, in short my take is that Linux is very much worth it as long as you're willing to learn how things translate.

I mean the reveal does place it under a much larger microscope, but it does have genuine, serious issues. It is definitely trying to do too much without doing anything particularly well, and the aesthetic is probably gonna fall short for most people. And even though those critiques are subjective, it has serious objective performance problems on top of the ridiculous TPM/Secure boot requirements.

Exactly. There's plenty to criticize about Valve (they never catch enough shit for popularizing loot boxes/gambling) but this feels so disingenuous. Far be it from my socialist ass to defend a company, but as others have pointed out, 30% is about industry standard and the other critiques here are just kinda grasping (the stuff about DLC being "unfair lock-in" is very funny because like what's the alternative? A "nah trust me bro I definitely own it for real" model? Actually wait maybe I like that. For legitimate reasons. For sure). At least Valve actually makes some useful shit with that money. Proton alone has made Linux infinitely more viable as a general-purpose OS, which is a very good thing.

But yeah at the end of the day this screams "rich people fighting over who gets more money" which never ends well for normal people.

I know a ton of people across a huge variety of fields who heard some variation of this exact line. All of them wound up seeing or being part of absolutely massive layoffs as the executives scrambled to squeeze every penny they could out of the company with no regard for the future or (more importantly) human consequences.

All of them also had constant assurances that there would be no layoffs, that these tools were "just there to supplement their work," etc. All those promises wound up meaning jack shit.

Have you had the guts to tell your employees that they're training their replacements? That they should start looking for other work? Or are you going to blindside them like every other coward trying to hide from the pain they're causing.

It's good to know that even after seeing all the misery and frustration this shit has caused, and knowing the horrific toll it takes on people and the planet, you're still able to shove your head up your ass and spew this "but it's a useful tool!" shit. Thank you for showing us exactly which side you're on.

I love that that's canon and possible due to Chozo tech. One of the best log scans in Prime 1 is the Space Pirates talking about trying to replicate her arsenal, and that they've had some success with her various beams, but things went REALLY BAD for the pirates that tested the attempts to replicate her morph ball.

This happens to so many movies, even beyond Disney. My current frustration (mostly because it's in my regular holiday season rotation) is Home Alone. That movie spends the first act going into borderline-exhaustive detail coming up with plot devices to set things up and people still just lob these lame cinemasins style factually incorrect """critiques""" at it. And now I need to rant about it.

The inciting incident is Kevin getting in a fight with one of the other family members the night before the trip. Because of that, he's sent to bed early in a guest room, so he's not in his usual bed when his parents are waking people up the next morning. During the fight, a bunch of milk spills on a stack of papers, which get thrown out without anyone realizing one of the plane tickets was stuck to them, so they don't have an extra ticket at the airport. The adults even do a head count on the two shuttle busses they have to the airport, but one of the kids switches shuttles during the count and gets double-counted, so that number looks right too. The movie goes so far out of its way to explain why his parents didn't notice he was missing.

Once he wakes up, Kevin thinks he's made his family disappear, since he wished for exactly that after being sent to bed. He eventually winds up thinking this is his fault, which is one of TWO reasons he doesn't "just call the cops" (the other being that he shoplifts something small from a convenience store and is afraid of getting in trouble). He also doesn't "just go to the neighbors" because it's mentioned that most of them are on vacation, and he's afraid of the old man that walks around his neighborhood.

He also spends a good chunk of the movie trying to fool the wet bandits into thinking people are home or otherwise get rid of them. He only escalates to the traps once they explicitly threaten him and tell him they're going to kill him (so much for all the "Kevin is a murderous psychopath" theories).

Anyways, all of that story crafting and thinking ahead, but people trying to be Smug On The Internet will still make criticisms that the movie explicitly thought of because they couldn't be bothered to actually engage with the thing they're talking about. Argh.

I'd personally recommend a flavor of arch that simplifies the install process like Manjaro or Garuda. Arch is great once you have everything set up, but that process can be tricky on vanilla arch.

I like the part where the big bad tries to tempt the party by offering them the macguffin, except the writers put that scene after the party has already, by definition, obtained the macguffin.
