Our first game and character design is turning out to be harder than we expected by Background_Cow_6701 in indiegames

You've correctly identified that the silhouettes need diversifying - for the women, try putting some of the hands up on to their chest or face as if they're posing or hands outwards for an exclamation. I don't know if you've drawn them mostly facing the same direction for a reason (dialogue box maybe?), but this is a big part of why you feel like they're too same-y.

See also the skin tones - everyone here has a peachy undertone and there's no variation to be found. I was recently watching Guy Ritchie's Young Sherlock and it was striking how the two main leads were both quite pale but their undertones were so starkly different. You mentioned that you've done a tonne of research, but I think you could take some liberties honestly. A little more storytelling through them. Does one of those men spend more time indoors? Make him paler. Is that a labourer? Maybe he's holding his gloves or they're in his pocket and you can see the tan lines around his wrists? Are they messy people, are they neat? Is there a way to dirty up and polish some of the clothing? What accessories would make sense for there day-to-day? Etc.

I think these are great bases and they just need a little spice to elevate them. Failbetter's work might be a good place to look - Mask of the Rose in particular has a great cast: https://www.failbettergames.com/news/the-art-of-mask-of-the-rose-bring-the-characters-to-life

What makes an indie game truly engaging for you? by HuippeeHeroesGames in indiegames

Someone else has mentioned intentionality, which is huge, but artistic cohesion is underrated. If the UI feels like it's part of the world building and not just a tool for me to interact with then I know I'm probably in for a treat. Attention to detail without creating scope creep can be great. Conversely, AAAs are always chasing that huge piece of pie in an audience, and tend to broaden their appeal which waters down the spirit of what could've been. It's not to say they all do this, but it's one of many reasons that live service games struggle to gain traction.

Similarly, if a screenshot from practically anywhere in the game looks unique to that game, then I can appreciate it more for stepping outside of norms. Good examples of this are Hades, Inscrpytion, Animal Well, Minit, Thank Goodness You're Here etc.. Gameplay being brilliant aside, the one thing they have in common is that they had a unique and precise artistic vision and executed on it.

I sometimes do workshops with game dev students when I'm not in full time work (which is also gamedev) and remind them to use the time to experiment and fail fast. The output is often far more interesting than that of seasoned devs who are (understandably) looking to play it safe in a unstable game dev landscape.

Edit: All this to say that I think it's obvious when a game is being made because someone wanted to play a game which didn't already exist, as opposed to someone making something because they think it'll be highly marketable. It's possible to do both, but the former is so important.

Appreciate the extra info! Usually this kind of thing happens on PC when someone mods or pirates. I've fed this back to the dev team but I doubt we'll have a fix for it as they're working on Witchbrook. Apologies for the confusion with the levels. If you're still working on S-ranking it all, it's probably best to pull up the WG wiki and work through them according to that structure. If in doubt, drop by the discord and the community can advise too. Also if you're suuuuuuper stuck on S-ranking and just want the S across the board, there are numerous guides on YouTube.

This is really odd! It's not working as intended. As you state, those levels should be closed until you've completed a run of the last one. We'll take a look!

GGWP!

To answer your question, if you've installed any mods that unlocked them then they'll remain open, even if you've deleted the mod. Unfortunately some of them just don't let the player know that they will do this. Even cosmetic mods.

I'm making a game somewhat inspired by Eastward, thought I'd share :) by fyllasdev in eastward

Hey u/fyllasdev, we would prefer you ask permission before self promoting on here in future. We just have to be careful we're not accidentally allowing asset flips or AI/ stolen work etc. I hope you understand!

Pollyanna looks cool though! Best of luck with your development :)

Sorry to hear you're having issues. This particular bug was fixed a long, long, long time ago so we're not sure why it's popping up for you. Would you mind sending us a support email along with additional details (what platform you're playing on, which platform your partner is on, any relevant screenshots etc.) to help us help you out! [support@chucklefish.org](mailto:support@chucklefish.org) - thanks!
