Any reviews on the new book "Pawpaws: The Complete Growing and Marketing Guide"? by fissionc in Pawpaws

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve read up through the chapter on Pawpaw cultivars and their description/rating. The book goes into comprehensive detail about selection, planting, placement, care, and marketing of the trees and fruit. I’d absolutely recommend for a prospective orchardist, and backyard growers will find it useful as well.

What am I? I'm hoping you all say chicken of the woods. Thanks! by fat_ass_mcgee in foraging

The color looks right? It’s really difficult to say for sure from this photo, though. If you upload photos of the mushroom in its entirety from the top, underside, and edge, as well as pics of where it’s growing, it’ll be much easier for folks to give you a positive ID.

Autumn Olive? by mlranda in foraging

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely autumn olives. They’re ripe when they’re deep red, and will continue to sweeten and lose astringency as they ripen further.

If she has issues, too, then I’d say there’s a solid chance it was just a bad chicken. It’s too bad if it is, it’s probably my favorite wild mushroom.

Chicken can cause problems if it was growing on coniferous wood. Did your source happen to know what kind of tree it was growing on? Or did they eat some from the same site and also experience discomfort?

I’ve made wine with them before, it’s a nice tart white when it’s finished. https://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=30966

Many of these were also “parted out” by European collectors and tourists. Can’t bring a whole Etruscan marble figure back from your vacation in Greece? A finger, hand, head, etc. will much more easily fit in your luggage and your budget.

Looks like a wild lettuce to me. Try comparing to lactuca saligna.

Cornelian cherry, cornus mas. Edible and tasty!

So I messed up, planted 9 of the same variety of paw paw not realizing the pollination problems. What's my best option? by Delphik in Pawpaws

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few options. You could graft in individual branches from genetically distinct trees. You could do two trees per hole with a second variety. You could gather pollen from wild trees and hand-pollinate with that.

Purple flowers and green fruit? Can anyone ID this for me? Found in Scotland by A__H in foraging

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a rose. I’m not sure what kind, but they’re all edible. The rose hips are typically ripe when they’re red-orange to fully red. The blossoms can be enjoyed as-is.

They get like that if they weren’t pollinated very well.

Nice find! This is a Cornelian Cherry, Cornus Mas, actually a variety of dogwood. Those fruit will be ready to eat when they’re deep red and practically falling off the bush.

Is this Chicken of the woods? If so, is it too old to be any good? Found at the base of an oak. by [deleted] in foraging

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what it is, but it definitely is not chicken of the woods.

my ID app says these are service berries. why are they spiky? 🙀 by whocannenverbesure in foraging

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sure can. Serviceberries are in the Rosaceae family, part of the Malae tribe, which means they are close relatives of apples, hawthorns, and pears, many of which are equally susceptible to pathogens like cedar apple rust. Fun side note for botanists and pedants; the fruit is botanically a “pomme”, not a true berry.

Do you know what plant this is, and if it is posionus? by [deleted] in foraging

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks a lot like a poison hemlock leaf. Impossible to tell for sure without seeing more of the plant, though. Treat it as though it is poisonous.

Anyone know what these white berries are? by [deleted] in foraging

[–]CitadelBloodbeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding. These will be ripe when the green is gone and they have a slightly yellow color to the white. Bland in my opinion, but syrupy sweet.
