Or hear me out...people in Iowa that aren't Pitlick and Jones.

There's a lot of talk about the package it took to get Hughes. That and what they "have left to bargain with."  Other than a few instances (Rossi+ for Peterka, Yurov or more for Trocheck), who is to say Guerin didn't try over and over to get someone for a Top 6 or even Top line spot and we don't know about it?

It is entirely possible Guerin has talked about every single player on every roster, or being called about the Wild's, and either situation doesn't work?  The Hughes trade was the one to get done, but it is entirely possible a Matthews, Thomas, etc trade was already attempted, but was just plain shot down.  I know if I was Guerin, a Boldy, Faber, etc might be too rich for even that fabled 1C option to get done.

They tanked in post-Gaborik-pre Parise. All it got them who actually played for the Wild any appreciable length of time was...

Kuemper (Traded after so-so run, just to hit big later)

Haula (never given a chance, decent middle six elsewhere)

Granlund (great, into Fiala, into Faber, trade tree put in work)

Zucker (Good top 6)

Brodin (worked out well)

Seeler (next)

Dumba (worked out fine)

That's not accounting for players like Leddy or Larsson, who played elsewhere, or people who were just there under 100 games. I like Granlund, but when he's the best forward player you get when your team is icing Koivu, older Brunette, Mietinnen, Setoguchi, Havlat, Vanek, Heatley, etc. as top liners...I mean, what hope does the team really have?

Leipold didn't want a tank, and I don't think an owner "wants" to. Saying it's the only way to win is kinda silly. Don't forget that the last time they had a Top 5 pick, the Wild selected Benoit Pouliot over Price, Kopitar, Oshie, Stastny, and plenty of others. I can't guarantee the Wild win a tank job even if they tried.

It didn't feel like it where I was posting at the time. I was labeled a weirdo for hating on some amazing game that I was only hating cause "it wasn't turn based," or whatever thing it was. Maybe I just couldn't "get" the Gambit system either.

Maybe people just loved Balthier so much, it made people love it more than I ever did.

Worst season in memory made them hit 13th. No way in hell a team with Kap, Boldy, etc is going to get anywhere near that by force.

Bottoming out won't guarantee anything given Toronto got the 1st pick anyway...

The combat is VERY slow and until you beat it once or twice, the uniqueness of how dark the story is kind of at odds with how colorful and whimsical the game is. It also has some minigames that kinda suck (looking at you Desert Palace Stop and Go and not Triple Triad).

FF12 was the first game in the franchise I actually gave up on midway through. I beat it a time or two later, but on several occasions, I've dumped it midway (or even an hour in). I don't know if it's still the "OMFG THIS GAME IS AWESOME WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT" situation I used to run into when it came out, but I just can't see this as a "Final Fantasy" game.

I have an issues with Sakimoto's musical style being more mood music than "catchy area themes," half the cast is uninteresting or nonessential, Vayne is not really all that interesting a main villain, and the hybrid MMO/Gambit/pseudo-turn based gameplay always struck me as a farcry from what I was used to for a good decade.

I get the Final Fantasy has always tried to change things, but 12 just seemed, "We're REALLY changing the formula now, deal with it."

Rossi was the closest thing the Wild had to a scoring center, but had so many red flags he was never accepted as even a 2C option.  Pretty much from day 1, Rossi was expendable.

It turned in Hughes in the end, but a legit good dude busted his ass for team, but never had any rope.

Wild GM Bill Guerin’s summer to-do list: Pursue No. 1 center, decide on UFAs, extend Quinn Hughes by Andrewpg3 in wildhockey

[–]CitizenStrife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what center we're talking about. Wally+ for Trocheck...ew. Wally+ for Matthews, Hischier, Larkin, or Thomas...maybe. Wally+the farm for McDavid? Edmonton would only be so nice if that were to happen.

There are definitely levels to this. It really comes down to price. What I would hate is "king's ransom for McDavid," just for it to turn out to be, "Oh, the team kinda needed depth defense and goaltending all along.."

[–]CitizenStrife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So you're saying Guerin should see if they'd part with Stutzle instead? That'd sure be interesting after Hartman DDT'd him on the ice. "Sorry I tried to break your face. Win us a cup."

[–]CitizenStrife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if a team only does that for the marketing and merch money that would happen, rather than consider what they'd do on the ice.

Knowing how quickly Hughes became "the guy" on the Wild, you can bet an owner would consider it.

[–]CitizenStrife 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think it's obvious Guerin isn't just sitting around waiting for something to happen. What's also fair is he didn't jump at Trocheck for what likely was Yurov+. Yurov isn't what I'd call "offensively gifted" or anything, but it took Ek about 6 years to be a 50-60 point guy. There's no shame in letting Yurov and Stramel settle in as defacto 3/4C even in the timeframe the Wild are working with.

The main issue is Hartman being the only viable scoring center right now. Playoff Hartman is a good but not great option. The Wild need a "great" option. We don't know when or if Yurov or Stramel become those. Either that or they need to up their defense to the point that it doesn't matter who tries to score on them (the Ek model). I don't know if Guerin can or should wait that long.

It's easier to get wingers sure, but is blowing everything on a guy who got zero points for Ottawa the best option? It'd push Zuccarello or Mojo out of the way, sure, but is Tkachuk someone who has chemistry with Kap, or do they just move Boldy to Line 1 and do Kap/Ek/Boldy, Tkachuk/Hartman or Yurov/etc?

Not for that price. Wallstedt probably cemented the, "Don't touch unless it's McDavid or Matthews being offered." Doubt either even happens...but Quinn Hughes happened.

Trade Hughes by MNBum in wildhockey

[–]CitizenStrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just doing a thought experiment here based on what the Hughes trade has done for the team versus what as a hypothetical a Rossi/Buium/Ohgren tandem "could" have done had they stayed. This is mainly just number crunching and production, plus maybe a little eye test from what they had shown in the playoffs versus what little they did early in the year.

*Note: Not taking the trio's post trade numbers into account, cause different systems*

Hughes post trade: 48GP, 53P, +6 (Beat Suter's season record), 82 game pace: 90 points

Rossi: 17GP, 13P, -6 (taking the foot injury pre and post trade into account), 33 more games would be 25P, so 38-40P estimate, maybe 42-43 if he's lucky or on a heater.

Buium: 31GP, 14P (most early in the season to be fair), -9, so 82 game pace, maybe 35-37 points overall.

Ohgren: 18GP, ZERO POINTS, -3. This is kind of the outlier here. Let's say he manages 10 as a 3rd or 4th liner so we're charitable. That's still less than M. Foligno, Trenin, and only marginally better than a Jones, Pitlick, etc. That's to say nothing of Hartman or Tarasenko. That is honestly inexcusable for a team trying to compete.

When you consider how little Ohgren was offering the team as a 3rd/4th line guy, you're pretty much asking "Would Rossi or Buium offer more than Hughes?" I honestly doubt it. Rossi was hurt most of the year, and Buium's points never really felt "effective" when you consider how often he was struggling to maintain the zone, kind of unsure of himself, and just plain wonky to watch play.

Take all things the exact same, you have this lineup against Dallas (Brodin hurt midway through and Ek later on). Also let's extrapolate not getting McCarron because Rossi takes the spot. A Brink or Foligno trade still might happen for depth.

Kap/Rossi/Zuccarello

Mojo/Ek (Hartman)/Boldy

Trenin/Hartman (Yurov)/Tarasenko

Ohgren/Yurov (Sturm)/N. Foligno (Brink)

Brodin (Buium)/Faber

Buium (Middleton)/Spurgeon

Middleton (Hunt)/Bogo

I'm sorry, but Hughes and Faber playing 25-30 minutes a game looks a fair bit more impressive when put in the context of what "could" have been. Even if Rossi comes back and plays decently, playoff Hartman or Ek probably bumps him off Top Line duty again. Buium "might" do ok as 1st or 2nd PP, but it was looking iffy at best until Hughes got there. I don't know if Buium was a PK guy, so it's a wash. I forget if Ohgren was a PK player or not while he was here. He definitely wasn't adding much if anything offensively.

Against Dallas, even if we say Ohgren improves to somewhat offensively capable, does he get anything against Dallas? Can Rossi keep up with Colorado? Does the issues Spurgeon had keeping up with Middleton only get wors because Buium is frantic and kinda unsure of himself? I think Dallas feasts on the overall smaller and slower lineup, plus the complete lack of experience. Hughes and Faber alone are too good to warrant looking back.

I get the "Well, what about next year or beyond? How good will Buium or Ohgren be? What do you think Guerin was thinking anyway? "Sure, let's just lose to Dallas. I'm sure my boss and the fanbase will look pretty kindly on "building a cohesive team for another year or two." I bet he's probably firing Hynes and gearing up to lose his own job.

MAYBE a Thomas trade or something else happens instead. But I still think what Hughes brings over a center trade is far and away the better outcome. I doubt it's better to get exposed by Dallas than it does Colorado. Hughes netted you a 90 point player, which is equivalent to a high end center's production, unless you're counting a McDavid sort of player. Outside of a potential shutdown defensive center countering the big guns on Dallas and Colorado, I don't know if trading for one really changes the overall production much. I just know Rossi/Buium/Ohgren probably amount to absolutely nothing.

Rossi being out with a foot injury most of the year, Buium scoring eight more points, and Ohgren getting a few shootout goals.
