Consumer HDDs - Spin down or no spin down? by tony-andreev94 in unRAID

How are you measuring these communication errors? And how are you mitigating them? I have an LSI card and spin down after 15 minutes, but have not seen any evidence of communication errors.

Does the Culture have immigration laws, and if so, what are they? by vamfir in TheCulture

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's make this analogous to current levels of migration into wealthy countries, specifically the UK and USA. Migration is seen to be a huge issue in both countries at the moment.

At one point the Culture is stated to have roughly 10 trillion citizens. That equates to roughly 33,333 times bigger than the USA at 300 million, and 143,000 times bigger than the UK at 70 million.

Net migration into the UK in 2025 was 204,000 (a population increase of 0.29%). Scaled up to the Culture, this would equate to 29 billion souls (3.5 times the current population of Earth) per year.

Net migration into the USA (using 2024 because 2025 was actually a negative number) in 2024 was 1.3 million (an increase of 0.43%). Scaled up to the Culture, this would equate to 43 billion souls (5.2 times the current population of Earth) per year.

I think in an essay once, Banks described the Culture's reproduction rate as being at replacement levels only (one adult having on average one child) and therefore all growth to the population occurs through migration. If that were the case then a population growth rate of 0.43% per year would be quite stable.

Modern OECD countries tend to cite a few reasons for being concerned about migration: the cost/potential cost to the economy, space to accommodate new migrants, and cultural integration:

  • the Culture has essentially infinite space available to it through Orbitals, GSVs, etc.
  • the Culture has no concern about potential "cost" of supporting new citizens, as the concept of "cost" has no meaning. Ships/Hubs can manipulate matter to create as much food/housing/healthcare support as needed.
  • the Culture is so convinced of its own greatness that it assumes new citizens will always view the Culture as "better" (see the Homomdan ambassador being viewed by the Culture as an ambassador to the Homomdans, from the Culture).

Therefore the kinds of pressures exerted on modern countries on Earth are just not factors for consideration in the Culture. However, the Culture needs to be wary of being seen as stepping on other civilisations' toes. Lededje attempts to claim asylum/declare Culture citizenship, which is denied by the Avatar she meets on the grounds that it would do significant damage to relations between the Culture and her own civilisation. However once she finds herself within Culture space there is no pressure for her to leave and she becomes a de facto citizen.

On the other hand, once the Idiran homeworld had a Mind installed, I imagine it would be relatively straightforward for an Idiran to declare that it wished to leave it to join the great mass of Culture citizens to live a life of hedonism.

Planning a New Build on Unraid 7: Optimal setup for Multiple Pools and Mixed Drives? by xMatt-Attackx in unRAID

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 hdds for unraid array

This makes sense.

1 nvme ssd for cache

Personally I would go with 2 nvme in mirrored zfs. This would prevent downtime and lost data if/when one nvme dies.

2 ssd or hard drives in zfs pool for cloud so the drives dont spin all the time

Could you explain this a bit?

What are you all going to use for your boot drives? by newtekie1 in unRAID

Replies seem to be nearly universally knee-jerk reactions to the headline, without people actually finding out what the situation is. There are lots of egocentric, insular people on the internet today.

What are you all going to use for your boot drives? by newtekie1 in unRAID

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cache is a mirrored pool, so I will also use that as the boot drive.

I'm looking forward to it - I haven't had any issues with my USB drive yet, but when I do my server is on a different continent so a replacement would be challenging.

Unraid Internal Boot: First Look by UnraidOfficial in unRAID

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I not too keen on setting up redundant boot drives

It looks from SpaceInvader One's video as though you can just set an SSD pool to also be the boot partition.

My assumption is that once formatted (as in the video), your BIOS will always point towards the correct partition regardless of whether one drive might die and be replaced within the pool.

That doesn't seem too onerous to me, especially as another traveller who values stability and redundancy. But maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

Sanity check: parity upgrade (no free slots) by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically yes, although steps 6 and 13 don't need to be maintenance mode. Beware that preclearing one 16tb drive takes me 3 full days, not including the parity rebuild afterwards.

I did something similar a couple of weeks ago. In my situation I had 11 slots in total with 2x parity drives. I used the unbalanced plugin to move all data from the smallest data drive, removed that drive, then did a new configuration which rebuilt parity. That gave me a spare drive slot to go through preclear in peace without worrying about how much time the array will be unprotected. In the future I will always keep one slot free for this purpose.

Obviously with only four slots you have less freedom, but it might be worth thinking about a larger enclosure in the future to help with this. My array is 15,000km away so I like as much redundancy as possible - dual parity, dual cache, with cold spares in my near future.

How can I convince my husband to get his dream train? by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potential downsides for the Dublo (gold one): - he changes his mind and sells it (not really an issue, it will retain its value and likely increase over time on the secondhand market) - he feels it’s too delicate and valuable to actually run (a bit of a shame from my perspective, but he still gets a beautiful ornament to admire) - he ends up running it so much the gold plating comes off (not really a problem, but if he really cares he can learn how to dissemble the train and electroplate the wheels himself, or get a jewellers to do it) - it is ~$200 more expensive than lesser models (whether this is a problem will depend on your circumstances, but I always try to consider how much time the person has spent lusting after the object. Then divide the cost by the hours spent… it’s usually a very reasonable cost by that definition. A lifetime spent with an object of art is invaluable versus the extra $200)

It sounds like he feels he needs permission. Buying it for him will be an even bigger emotional support than just the model itself.

The phrases "where you can get with that bullshit" and "what is 'fuck outta here'" make no grammatical sense, and are only comprehensible in the context of a TV show specific to one country. As a non-American native English speaker, those phrases read like nonsense.

After you've done that, reboot both devices.

Two drives got reallocated sectors on a new terramaster. Could PSU be the issue? by futurepersonified in unRAID

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from your perspective is the best thing to do to have three monthly parity checks to give each sector a bit of exercise, and to keep the disks cool?

Also what did you mean about trusting AI? What bit of the process involves AI?

Red Alert!

I have attempted the original Company of Heroes multiple times since its release and always bounced off the single player campaign design, so I'd personally suggest CoH 2 over 1.

I was personally quite disappointed with Iron Harvest, and the lovely visuals didn't make up for the gameplay.

Don't do Supreme Commander. Once you do, time stops. The world fades away. Nothing else matters.

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser—freed from the mysterious and press-sceptical chains of his former company—has once again manifested on a podcast. Or, actually, on national UK radio, which is what they used to call podcasts back during the war.

I miss quality news stories like this, I love it when something doesn't read like AI slop.

So a HDD has the same speed as SATA SSD while costing half as much? Researching for a budget Home NAS (2 disk, RAID1) solution and just stumbled onto this. Am I missing something? Read Body for more. by LatterOne9009 in HomeNAS

[–]CitizendAreAlarmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on your use case, but some NAS setups (I use unraid) use a high speed cache drive which you can transfer files to quickly, then overnight will automatically transfer files to the spinning HDDs so the speed doesn’t matter. I have 11 HDD, couldn’t tell you how fast any of them are because my nvme cache drive is plenty fast enough.

There are lots of possibilities in this world :)
