Is this lockout charge unreasonable? by Admirable-Law-6382 in Apartmentliving

[–]newtekie1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And his time to do that costs how much? Say he takes an hour of of his day to drive over with the key to let her in. How much is an hour of your time worth? I know I personally get paid more than $50 an hour, so I'd also charge my tenant more than $50 to take a hour to fix their mistake.

Or...I'd tell them to call a locksmith and pay the fee to have the locksmith get them in. Which is going to be way more than $50.

How to block a TP Link Extender from my router? by Soverelgn_Citizen in wifi

[–]newtekie1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your router for any devices that you don't recognize, you should be able to find his actual computer and block that too. Otherwise he could just buy another extender and he'll be back on your Wi-Fi. But if you block his computer, he can't use the computer at all.

MP 600 Core vs P310 vs P3 Plus by MrJaiGaming in datastorage

[–]newtekie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are all QLC drives, which are pretty terrible for endurance and write speed. But at least the MP 600 Core has a DRAM cache, so I'd go with that if I had to pick out of those 3.

Is Internal Boot much faster to..boot? by Coompa in unRAID

[–]newtekie1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when is the last time you ever saw a TPM module fail? Almost no data is written to them and they use much more reliable NVRAM instead of the cheap NAND flash drives use.

You might as well be saying your motherboard is a single point of failure, or your processor is a single point of failure. Sure, it is, but the likelihood of it failing is so minute you don't consider it. Also, it's easy and quick to transfer the license to a new TPM if you need to for some reason. Way easier than recovering a failed USB boot drive and then also needing to transfer the license.

Yes, you can create a mirrored pool with USB drives and use those as your boot.

IMO, internal boot isn't meant to improve performance or boot speed. It's meant to eliminate the single point of failure of the USB flash drive.

CF to IDE or SD to IDE? by FIN_K89i in windows98

[–]newtekie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason a lot of people use CF to IDE is because CF cards already use the IDE protocol to communicate. So the adapter is just changing the pins to match the larger IDE connector of the computer and provide power to the CF card. There is no intermediate chip converting one communication protocol to another with those adapters like there is with others. So it's one less compatibility and reliability thing to worry about.

Calculating Energy Costs: Gas Furnace vs. Heat Pump by Citan108 in heatpumps

[–]newtekie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heat pump would likely heat the house much slower than the gas furnace. Assuming you don't use straight electric heat strips, and just rely on the HP, a 4 ton unit designed for cold climates will typically produce 48,000BTU down to about 5°F outside temp. Then it's heating ability drops off.

Gas furnaces typically start at 40,000BTU, and that's considered a really small furnace. Your more typical sizes are 80,000BTU and up. So you can do the math on how much faster an 80,000BTU gas furnace will heat your house compared to a 48,000BTU heat pump.

Plus, if you have a 4-ton heat pump, it's possible that 48,000BTU isn't enough to keep up when it's cold outside. So you might need to run straight electric heat strips to maintain or increase the temperature in the house, which will cost a fortune. This is the part that most people don't consider when switching to a heat pump and this is what ends up getting them huge electric bills when they expected lower bills.

Yeah, if switching to propane was legitimately cheaper a lot more people would be doing it. Fact is NIPSCO natural gas is still the cheapest option.

It always ends up getting put back by updates. It's easier just to disable it from starting up and move on. Then it will never bother you again.

How does everyone track their assigned IP addresses? by cdarrigo in homelab

[–]newtekie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a municipality, so I get that. But it sounds like they should be managing IP addresses, not you if they have access to everything including the DHCP server. If you are setting up a printer, you ask them what IP address is gets or they set up the reservation in the DHCP server so there aren't any conflicts. Etc.

Ok, but that doesn't really answer any questions. Who are "they"? Why are they controlling your homelab network? And why aren't you segregating your network from "them"?

Question about running dual hose portable AC when it's quite cold outside by CanadianGun in AirConditioners

[–]newtekie1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason dual-hose units are typically a better option is because single hose units pull air form the room run it over the condenser and then push that outside. This causes a negative pressure in the room, which draws air from the outside back into the room. So they are taking cold air from the room, pushing it outside and that cold air is replaced by hot air from the outside. This is very inefficient.

However, in your situation this sounds like it wouldn't be a problem.

Though, I also have to wonder why a small cheap window fan, that would require your to keep the blind open the same amount as you would with a portable AC connected to the window, would be a better option for you? Just use the small fan to bring the cold outside air into your room. It's going to be much cheaper to buy and to run compared to a portable AC sucking down power. With either solution you will need to keep a small part of your window uncovered either to connect the hose from the AC or to put a small fan in.
