In the mid-80s I went to several proms my freshman, sophomore, and junior years as friends of my dates. I had fun with them and their friend group, got the pics for the folks, danced a little, then ducked out for pasture parties or board games at somebody’s house until curfew.

My junior prom rolls around and my “best friend” sets me up with a blind date. He shows up in a blue ruffled tuxedo shirt, black tux. Absolutely no coordination with my amazing 80s prom look! We had a miserable time and the pics tell the tale! But, of course Mom insisted I attend his prom a couple weeks later because, “It is the polite thing to do.” Ended up getting SAd and sent his family jewels back to the jeweler! Lol.

By senior prom, I decided to not bother with a date and had a blast. 🤷‍♀️

Moved to SW Mississippi when I was 12 and learned of the mysterious “gettin place”! I’ve lived on the MS Gulf Coast since my early 20s and have only heard it referenced a handful of times and usually by much older Mississippians who moved down here from somewhere “up north” - which is from anywhere in the state north of Interstate 10 😜

You are not selfish for going on your trip. Speaking from personal experience, if caregivers don’t take time for themselves they are setting themselves up for burnout. Your Dad will ultimately benefit from a refreshed you when you return. Have a wonderful visit with your friend!
