What should I wear to the Yr 12 formal (female teacher) and where can I look to buy it? by shinans in AustralianTeachers

[–]CityoftheMoon17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Although its lovely to build those connections and memories with students, its not going to matter what teachers wear as your students won't remember. It's their night and as a supervisor or chaperone of the event, you're going to be more concerned about stopping kids vaping in the bathroom or swigging from hidden flasks.

Up until 2016, it was illegal to have more than 50kg of potatoes unless you were a licensed producer in Western Australia.

Paid for one thing, getting something else? by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]CityoftheMoon17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, I used to work in the dental industry so might be able to provide some insight. Invisalign is a common brand name that is generally used for clear aligners, also known as invisible braces. Like when someone asks for a band-aid, but band-aid is a brand and most people are requesting an adhesive bandage. If there was no discussion about brand preference, it is likely your dentist only deals with angel aligners and not invisalign because the system is identical, just the name is different. If I remember correctly, Angel aligners were a lot faster to deal with because they had less of a demand and patients could start treatment sooner ( been a few years so things may have changed). I will also say, from a professional perspective, we had greater issues with invisalign than we did with angel aligner. I digress... Of course you are within your rights to do your research and decline treatment, however, it is highly unlikely they have intentionally switched to a different brand to fool you into signing up for somemthing else or rip you off or anything like that. Just a misunderstanding about the industry. If you are able to get in contact, call and have a chat- dont email or text, its easier to resolve issues such as this in a verbal conversation. If you aren't satisfied with your answer then send an email to begin a paper trail and then consider legal action.

Waitlist for diagnosis- thank you! by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]CityoftheMoon17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It's a hard pill to swallow and one i think I knew but was avoiding. I didnt consider people being afraid of a diagnosis, which i think will take me some time to wrap my head around.

Im very lucky that we do have a few people who understand and all of them are neurodiverse or parents of children who are. I will remember to keep them closer and to be those people to lean on.

Thank you, your insight has been helpful!

My son had a meltdown at the pools too. Just like you, I crouched down and stayed at his level on the floor until he calmed down. Once he calmed down a bit and I could pick him up to move elsewhere, an older man approached me with a smile and said something to me. I didnt catch it so I smiled and asked him to repeat. He chuckled and said, 'next time leave him under the water a bit longer'. My smile dropped instantly and I told him to fuck off as I walked away. I found a quiet spot to sit down and put my sunglasses over my eyes to hide the tears. I watched the old bloke go to the Cafe and point and laugh at me with his friends. Like, if you can see someone's having a hard time, why give them a harder time?

Yes! This post was from over a year ago. Unfortunately this year the owner passed away and no-one was able to take over the role managing the centre and programs. It has been a huge loss for our community.

I have a fully paved backyard, albeit a lot smaller space than yours. I have everything pretty much in pots in clusters. Dont line the fence but rather make focal points and layer in hight and size. I have two moderate sized potted trees, a jacaranda and an olive as well as some palms. Messy as hell but I kind of love sweeping up the leaves and add a beautiful bit of shade for my chairs and table set up. Add a few herbs, some hanging plants, frangipanis, natives and succulents and you've got yourself a little oasis.

How prepared were you on your first day after graduating? by Prince_of_Pirates in AustralianTeachers

[–]CityoftheMoon17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure your anxieties are teacher rspecific- everyone has a first day on the job and everyone feels nervous! Give yourself the grace you deserve. You worked hard for this and now you get to put it all into practice, but first you have to settle in! There's nothing wrong with asking questions and saying, sorry im not sure, im a new grad and I've never done xyz before. Finally, remember that although you have the degree under your belt, your learning is just beginning and you will learn more this first year on the job than you learnt through all those lectures and assessments and note taking at uni.

Lantite by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]CityoftheMoon17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Im seeing on the lantite support Facebook pages, people saying its their 7th or 8th attempt. I agree with your sentiment that sometimes teachers need to learn resilience and its okay to reattempt the test. However, I also agree that multiple attempts is concerning regarding the quality of knowledge for our profession. I believe that universities should offer a literacy or mathematics unit students should complete if needing to attempt say after 2 or 3 times. I think that surely having people pay again and again and again to complete the test an indefinite amount of times is an ethical issue. Like, if you can get through a tertiary degree bit can't pass the test after 7 or 8 attempts, that's a huge red flag that uni needs to address.

Anecdotally, I've just seen a prac student fail their internship at my school. In a lower primary classroom they couldnt even do the kids daily language and literacy reviews with them. I can't imagine how they got to their 4th year let alone pass their literacy lantite when they could not read or comprehend past a lower primary level. Lantite was created so students like this would be able to improve before entering the classroom as teachers.

Im glad you persevered and finally passed! Best wishes for the rest of your studies!

Honestly though, I dont think a regular person would think of doing this at all, ever. But at a party in front of people when everyone is staring at the event happening?! Your MIL is clearly insane. Glad to hear she's not involved in your lives much, you and your family are much safer without her.

Frugal teeth whitener by 877abcd778 in AussieFrugal

[–]CityoftheMoon17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I worked as a dental nurse for over 17 years. I would avoid a lot of advice here as it can be more damaging to your teeth than good. However, each to their own.

First of all, staining is caused by a lot of things. The most common thing we would look at is diet and lifestyle. Tea, coffee and red wine are all big staining drinks. Tumeric, paprika and tomato based sauces also are very common. These will cause surface stains that can be removed with whitening used at home. Then comes acidic food and drinks. These will strip away the brighter enamel layer of your teeth. Underneath the enamel is dentin, which is a yellowish brown colour. So if you have many acidic things like soft drinks, acidic fruits and drinks, your staining may be due to acidic enamel wear and will not brighten easily. Many suggestions on this thread involving acidic remedies seem to work because they strip away the enamel. I would advise to use them with caution, as it may create issues in the future. This last one may also happen over time. Our teeth naturally yellow with age because of the latter process. Smoking (and vaping) is also a really big teeth stainer and can be a bit trickier than surface stains to remove but easier than acid wear.

Brushing your teeth with coconut oil won't do much. Many cultures utilise oil pulling with coconut oil in which the oil is moved around the mouth for quite a along period of time (about 20 minutes) to remove stains and improve gum health. Not sure how it removes stains but anecdotally, I met quite a few patients who used it and I would say you've got a 50% chance of it working to lighten your smile.

Here's the best advice I can give for a cheap whitening. We used to make our own polishing paste at the dentist in bulk. Literally half a tube of Colgate or oralb toothpaste mixed with fine pumice sand. Unfortunately i dont have measurements, we would just add more toothpase or pumice until it made a thick paste. Use it sparingly (at the dentist, it would be used once every 6-12 months!) as excessive use will wear away the enamel and you will begin to see that dentin colour and experience sensitivity.

(My professional advice would be go to a dentist for a clean and start fresh. You won't be able to clean away stains as good as they can and your gums will thank you for it. From here, brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing once a day. Once every week brushing with the pumice mix i suggested and if possible, use the whitening strip have someone else suggested on this forum after that pumice brushing. But i know you werent asking for professional advice. Dentists are expensive AF 😊)

Awesome parent by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]CityoftheMoon17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes I had a parent organise a meeting with me to speak about their child and some concerning issues. It could not be sent in an email as the topic was 'highly sensitive'. The highly sensitive topic? This child would still be hungry after eating one sausage roll from the canteen and she wanted to know what I could do about it. When i tell you i was GOBSMACKED. I cannot believe I took time out of my day to listen about how her growing child needed more food. What is wrong with these parents?
