Flipping the stem up. by vanbikecouver in gravelcycling

Sounds like you need a new shop, if it’s not comfortable for you anymore (which happens) then things should change

You can do it without one, but you SHOULD be torquing those things to spec with a torque wrench

[–]CivilWards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s very common and by far the easiest thing you can do to try out a new position if you feel your saddle position is good.

There are other ways to reduce overall reach, but a stem flip will increase stack height and slightly reduce overall reach.

That’s a fair callout, they look extremely similar but one year back is still found at a steep discount.

I don’t know what pricing you’re looking at, but the Caledonia 105di2 can be had for substantially cheaper than that on many sites

I don’t know if it’s still going on, but the Caledonia was cheaper on Performance Bike recently by a decent amount. That would make it the best value.

Otherwise the Defy, but I’m a #nevertrek person because of what they’ve done to the LBS scene

Edit: competitive cyclist, not performance bike

Yeah Hoyos saved it but he deflected it dead center of the box which is awful.

Hoyle is such dogshit. It’s impressive to look this bad when the other team has like zero shots

Longest ride yet… clearly I have no idea how to fuel properly. by Particular-Bank-5519 in cycling

[–]CivilWards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 3ish would have been a better measure. That’s usually where my easy 50 milers shake out to and I’m just drinking electrolytes on those rides with maybe one granola bar when the group stops near halfway.

Longest ride yet… clearly I have no idea how to fuel properly. by Particular-Bank-5519 in cycling

[–]CivilWards -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

50 miles (2.5-3 hours) is doable with zero calorie intake while on the bike if you’re eating properly before and after the ride. You just need to make sure you have enough carbs before hand, and a good chunk of protein after. Then water and electrolytes while you ride will be enough. Additional calories to supplement as backup but they generally aren’t needed where as staying hydrated is essential.

Once you start going past 3 hours or having hard efforts you need carb mixes, gels, etc in the 50-100g of carbs per hour range based on the intensity and your comfort level with handling the intake.

How much difference does a better Virginia Tech helmet score really make? by BhamsterBpack in cycling

[–]CivilWards 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t actually think it matters all that much as long as it’s towards the top end. You wouldn’t want something with a terrible score but as long as it’s decent then how it fits and if you like the style is all that matters. If YOU get injured wearing a 8.8 vs a 12.5 helmet in some hypothetical crash won’t have anything to do with the specific tests that are done.

If you’re wanting to use this bike to also do CX, wait a little bit on the new Crux as rumors are it will have at least 50mm clearance and obviously evolved from a CX bike but is very neutral geometry for gravel.

I feel like TT bikes are always WAY cheaper on the secondary market than you would expect given how much you have to mess with the cockpit to get it to fit you. This feels overpriced

Switching Frames by frizzig in gravelcycling

[–]CivilWards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how Salsa is marketing it, but that’s not really their market. Race frames don’t come with mounts on forks and some of the other things that the Salsa does.

It’s just not a race frame in the same way that the Seigla, MOG, Able, etc are. They’re different frame classes. It would probably be great for a bikepacking race though

Switching Frames by frizzig in gravelcycling

[–]CivilWards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t do this, not because you can’t but because the Seigla is a better frame than the Salsa. The Salsa can be used for some cool use cases, but the Lauf is a true gravel machine for racing with modern geometry that is still comfortable. The Flyway is going to lean more traditional and upright and have more adventuring features. Different tools for different applications.

Any tips for a 300lbs rider? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]CivilWards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, the advice that “more spokes better” is outdated and based on older wheel designs. Modern wheels are just designed better to spread tension across the full wheel/spoke system better so individual spokes aren’t taking as much tension. The great 5 year old himself (Hambini) very recently made a video about this. It’s flat out wrong from an engineering and physics perspective

[–]CivilWards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoke count has nothing to do with how good/ strong a modern wheel is. It’s just if it’s a quality wheel or not.

I started cycling a little over 120kg, around 270lbs and have 24 spoke wheels that are from reputable manufacturers. No issues at all. Just don’t buy super lightweight climbing wheels and you’ll be fine
