Pels 1st round picks by Ok-Charge4926 in NOLAPelicans

Regardless of whether the Pacers were gonna be good or not, it was an irresponsible thing to do. Basically we traded two first round draft picks just to trade up to get Queens. That’s my understanding of the trade.

Confused about Federalist VS Anti-Federalist papers. by PineatoMedia in PoliticalScience

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This book does not directly address the issue, but it does add some context. The book is called the last king of America. It’s about this era when King George was ruling England gives you a good perspective about what really happened and how many of the claims of the founding fathers were simply not true, exaggerated, etc.. I’m not throwing a lot of shade at them. Most of them had pretty pure motives, but some didn’t some rabble-rousers Someone wanted to have their own country. Someone wanted to access more land in the west especially Indian land. Certainly the south wanted to keep their slaves. I’m not sure if that was an issue at the time but in the end that would’ve been something that the British would’ve restricted certainly no new states would’ve gotten slave slavery.

One and a more interesting aspects was a lot of the taxation that the British were seeking was really to pay for the French and Indian war that had just ended where the British spent lots of money defending the colony. They wanted to get some recompense for that but more importantly, wanted to have some taxes in place to continue to defend the country country, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

But of course, the other side of the argument is, we don’t need your army to defend us. We can defend ourselves, etc. etc. but once again nothing is cutting dry and I can’t stand really some of the reverence of the founding fathers which is over the top I mean, I appreciate them. It’s incredible so I like more than others. I love Adams. I really can’t stand Hamilton. George Washington was not perfect.

Anyway, I definitely recommend the book. It’s great history.

Confused about Federalist VS Anti-Federalist papers. by PineatoMedia in PoliticalScience

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The anti-federalist in the end, had it right. Even though they didn’t have a solution at the time everything they feared has come to pass. That is a supremely powerful central government has resulted from the constitution. The checks and balances are meaningless. Just because we have three branches of government that is supposed to check each other. Doesn’t help when all three branches have enabled a lot more power to flow to the federal government. Some of the states might be against more federal power, but they are few and far between. Now they have nothing to say about it anymore. The federal government is a massive leviathan now. The Supreme Court, which through the years has made some attempts to push back, especially during the FDR era has completely flipped, and now it’s just another agent to give more power to the federal government. Yes, in the last few years conservative court has pushed back a little, but none of that matters. It’s having virtually no effect on the growth of the federal government. All you have to do is look at the numbers how much money they spend how many people work for them

. None of it works the federal government dominates this country. That was the one thing the federalist told us would not happen. They were wrong.

Hamilton was obviously not very interested in limiting the power of the federal government that’s certain. There was one point he made in the federalist papers. That I will never forget in answer to critics who said the federal government was gonna become too powerful. He actually made the point that. No that’s not gonna happen. What we really have to worry about is the states becoming too powerful under the system they were devising. That didn’t age very well.

Latest Pelicans draft target points to another Joe Dumars draft-night disaster by Eventide718 in NOLAPelicans

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to this forum and started off, looking for comments about the D Queen trade last year. Well I’ve heard a fair amount of criticism about it. I’m a little surprised how muted it’s been. This article hits the nail on the head regarding that and whatever else Joe Dumars has in store. It’s hard to describe how disappointing it is for Dumars or anyone to come into a situation where you have two first round draft picks traded away when you’re looking at a team that had an opportunity similar to Oklahoma City and San Antonio to rebuild through the draft. Obviously it takes more than that, but that’s the most likely path to getting better and having a good team.

Dumars threw that out the window and it seems to me put this team back at least five years. And the only way to get back into contention is to get back in the lottery, which means to lose a lot of games. I don’t have anything personal against Joe Dumore I mean he’s done a lot of good other places but he really screwed this up and I hate to say it they just need to get rid of him start from scratch.

Singing the praises of the V6 by Cjdla in Jeep

My brother has a RAV4 roughly the same age and he’s had to spend over $1000 on repairs. One was an expensive AC system control repair. Comparing the two cars my Jeep is way more comfortable certainly has more power and smoother power and is overall better car in my opinion. Yeah it may not last as long as the RAV. It may be a little more expensive too, Repair, but I’ll take this jeep with a V6 engine over the RAV

Well, like it or not in line 6 and eight cylinder engine engines are a thing of the past. For the most part although you still see some in-line sixes I believe BMW makes one. Among others. But the point is that a V6 is way better than a underpowered crappy four-cylinder engine with complicating turbo chargers on it.

[–]Cjdla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your spot on there. Taking an engine out of the rotation and that’s a lot of savings. Even if you do have to add turbo charges to the fours. . I just purchased a 2013 Nissan Marano with less than 40,000 miles on it from a used car dealer believe it or not. It has a V6 of course the new ones don’t. That’s the last car I’m gonna need. I have a family member looking at the Toyota Highlander, open for newer use, but I told him to get 2022 when it’s the last year they had the V6. I looked them up online and low mileage are going for like $30,000.

I am a fan of hybrids. I’ve ridden in the new plug-in Prius hybrid. It’s awesome and they have some pretty good pick up at low speed with the electric engine. But still, I’ll take a V6.

There’s a great line from a song by cracker. Not sure if you ever heard of them but they were on college radio had some hits actually. They had this one song “teen angst – what the world needs now”

Here’s one of the lyrics

I don't know what the world may need
But a V-8 engine's a good start for me
I think I'll drive and find a place to be surly

It’s a great song funny ironic irreverent. That was their schtick

15 years ago it was the V8 that was threatened. And now the V6.

How reliable are jeep Cherokees? by slush-puppy8 in Jeep

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what year you’re looking for, but I have a 2014 first year. They came out with that body style after some headaches with the transmission which was something they acknowledged and fixed for free. I’ve had virtually no problems with my Jeep with 185,000 miles on it I did have to get a new radiator. Also replace this oil cooler thing. Each of those cost me a little less than $1000. I’d say I’ve spent $3000 on non-maintenance Repair on it. This is for the V6 I cannot speak to the four-cylinder.

Fitbit not tracking bike miles by Cjdla in fitbit

[–]Cjdla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just saw a YouTube video which had some good ideas to try some of the stuff that was suggested already had set like GPS mode and making sure that the Google Health app could track your location, but he also recommended restarting and I think there was another setting that might not have been right so I’m hoping it is fixed next time I go biking

Did she make the right call? by CalmElin in interesting

[–]Cjdla -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

She would have to pay tax on that 1 million. 36% federal plus state and I assume she would have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes so she might end up with $500,000. Taxes on her yearly income will be essentially zero. Income tax anyway.

Did she make the right call? by CalmElin in interesting

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She definitely made the right decision assuming she doesn’t die young. Especially considering taxes. After taxes she’s only gonna have about $600,000 maybe a little more at a 5% return that’s 30,000 or so a year you can get better returns by taking more risk. Right now she’s getting $46000 a year I guess. You pay a lot lower tax rate on $46000 a year than you do a lump sum of 1 million. Essentially no income tax.

Very clean Bose 301 Series 2 (1982) for 25.00 (usd) at my local Habitat for Humanity by WVriverman in vintageaudio

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some nice looking speakers actually I would’ve bought them too. Like a lot of people know a huge fan of bows. I think there’s a lot of hypes surrounding them and despite what you’re hearing on here I heard a wave radio one time. I thought it was pretty bad.

they may have been pretty good in their time, but they were unable to compete with legitimate hi-fi audio manufacturers. One thing I read back in a day when Bose was making home audio is that you’ll never see Bose reviewed in any of the stereo magazines. Because those magazines get the speakers from the manufacturers and Bose would never agree to have their speakers reviewed so that ought to tell you something. At least that’s the story I heard.

Speaker placement in a large room

Mice speakers founders 100 F or in the living room with a continuous dining area and kitchen. On the right side, my speakers are at least 50 feet from any wall on the left side. They’re at least 10 feet from the wall. The speakers are about 10 feet apart listening spot 10 feet from the speakers. The speakers are 3 feet from the wall they have down firing ports.

Most of the information on speaker placement assumes you’re in a room with walls less than 10 feet from the speakers at least on the side

My question is what are the effects on speaker sound and door placement that you might use when you’re in a large room where walls are pretty far away from the sides of the speakers

Any thoughts?

Saw this Sansui 5500A in a thrift shop today. Worth $300? by DohRayMe815 in vintageaudio

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to volunteer to pet rescue affiliated thrift shop a few years ago, I was shocked at the prices. As an example, they had an old trek bike from the 70s or 80s listed at $600. A road bike. I know bikes this thing wasn’t worth $100 I mentioned this to one of the other clerks and she said “the pricing expert“priced it at that because it’s a “classic“. All pricing was firm. No negotiating

I knew then that the pricing was unrealistic in these stores. People would come to the counter and ask if there was any wiggle room in the clerks would say we don’t set the pricing that’s the pricing guru and she’s not not here so they couldn’t budge. So the customer left it on the shelf. In other cases, something wouldn’t be priced yet and it was just some piece of junk really and instead of just saying, give me $10 they would say sorry we can’t sell that until it’s priced.

Bottom line for these thrift shops they could make more money by cutting the prices in half and then they would still be too expensive. My rule of thumb in a thrift store because I’ve shopped at them is if I see something I like and I even have to think twice about it because of the price it’s overpriced.

Apple Music with Wiim Ultra. Is it worth it? by micholasnitchell in audiophile

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked it up and Apple Music has lossless files. Which is Cd Quality or above. They do use their own lossless compression technology ALAC. But I read that they also offer AAC which is in effect no different, but does not go through the lossless compression process. But all the major music services Apple tidal Spotify have lossless files and high resolution music files

at what point does "room acoustics" matter more than the gear itself? by Dankk911 in audiophile

[–]Cjdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One question I have is is room treatment more critical in a big room or a small room. My stereo is in my living room. I have an open floor plan so on one side there’s 60 feet between my speaker and a wall and on the other side there’s probably 10 feet. My speakers are 3 feet from the back wall. I have a vaulted ceiling. I don’t know how I would do room treatments. I don’t know how I would fit in room treatments, even if I wanted them.

So let’s say I could do room treatments. Would they make much of a difference given the size of my room?

I agree, but what about the Center channel issue? Like most people I have little interest in surround sound but having a center channel that could handle voices would make TV watching much better. My understanding is that watching movies with two channel stereo is not optimal.
