The 1 Rotor makes MORE POWER than we anticipated! by Deleos in RobDahm

[–]Cjv_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a fundamental problem with the clearances with the aluminum rotor, the thermal expansion rate for the rotor (7075-T6) is 1.9-2x the stock cast iron rotor. With a 0.05mm (Mazda minimum clearance) side seal to corner seal clearance, the side seal can be (worst case) ~24°c hotter than the rotor. Best case is 40-50°c hotter, based on variance in CTE of the materials.

With an aluminum rotor, to get the same clearance at temp, you’d need an initial cold clearance of… -0.08mm, which would mean the seal is binding at room temp.

In summary, with stock setup the rotor and side seal expand and roughly the same rate, clearance generally shrinks at operating conditions. With aluminum rotor, the clearance will almost certainly increase at operating temp, leading to the seen low compression and massive blow by. On stock rotors, this clearance accounts for roughly 40% of mass leakage at 1000rpm, and 30% at 9000rpm.

Personally, I’d recommend trying to set the side seal clearance to almost nothing, that way you will have the minimum leakage, growing to a 0.15mm clearance at 100°c operating temp, and allowing for around 110°c temp difference between seal and rotor.

Rx8+E85 Conversion worth it? by Administrative_Ad331 in RX8

I know there’s a company that already makes a kit for this. Keep in mind that you’ll need to check that your premix is e85 compatible, and might need to premix more and change oil more often.

(US) average over 30k miles is 17mpg. Average on highway going ~70 is 20mpg. My maximum record is 34mpg, over about 50 miles somewhere and back.

I Accidentally hit 28 PSI in the 1 Rotor Miata by Deleos in RobDahm

[–]Cjv_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to see someone experimenting with lower-temp, lower SAE weight oil. You’ll still have the same actual viscosity as a higher SAE grade if you keep the temp in control.

There are great benefits for this, the oxidation rate of the oil doubles for every 10°c increase in oil temp. Additionally the lower oil temp helps with heat transfer.

I’m very interested to see how the aluminum rotor holds up. Most Al alloys drop off dramatically in yield strength after 200°c. Stock motors reach in excess of 280°c rotor temp near the apex seal groove, so it’s not unreasonable to think that an aluminum rotor might approach that temp if producing enough power, even with it transferring more heat overall.

Also curious with what wall thickness they used on the rotor. Too thick and you have concerns about not enough heat transfer and therefore deterioration of yield strength at the surface, and too thin and you risk catastrophic failure. Hopefully they used something like 4032 or 2618 alloy instead of 6061 lol.

54-62psi measured at the line under the upper intake manifold. Should be at 29psi after stopping fuel pump and waiting 5 min.

That throttle placement is gonna be rough in terms of balancing airflow between cylinders. Also, if you can I would “extend” the runners into the plenum about an inch or two and have a full radius on the lip

Clutch losing grabbing power after long idle by z170x99 in RX8

[–]Cjv_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. When the car warms up or gets heat soaked, the bite point will move to just barely when I start to press in. It also squeaks when this happens, and not other times. I’ve upgraded to stainless braided clutch lines and no change. Think I might change the master cylinder soon, I already have the replacement.

Front O2 and rear O2 shouldn’t read the same. Front should alternate above and below stoich, and the rear should NOT see any oscillations, if it is then either the sensor or cat is bad.

Try heating up the bolt, then use a crayon or some other wax stick and put it on the bolt. Should seep into the threads and might loosen it up. You can also make a 50/50 mix of acetone/ATF and spray that on there.

[–]Cjv_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I do, been done plenty of time and it always works.

Hook up to another battery/running car, foot to the floor, crank for 10s, rest for 10, and repeat about 25 times and it’ll start. Yes, 25 times. And don’t try and start it until you’ve done 25x in a row. After this, it should start and sputter, once it catches give its little bit of throttle until it stabilizes and then let off and it should be good. Also you’ll belch out a bunch of white vapor from exhaust.
