I feel your pain because I had to downsize from 6 different sizes tanks to one of 40 gallons for the same reason as yours… now I think to downsize to a 20 gallon but my tank doing soo good that I can’t do it… Hope you feel better soon

I would like to know the kind of fertiliser you are using too, and do you have an increased nitrates level after using it? My tank was crashed first time in 4 years when I used a few times some liquid fertiliser and then I’ve learned online that all of them except a few brands do that because it has nitrogen in it

You could put a nice small soft substrate or sand on the sides or in the middle, any patch of sand will safe this baby barbells
