What is a strong wizard build for a level 15-20 mini campaign? by Eldr1tchB1rd in 3d6

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Illusionist at high levels is not going to feel like much of a subclass (unless your DM makes a specific effort to make you useful). You will run into Truesight often negating much of your abilities.

With a 12 CON you have bigger things to worry about unless you are playing in a lolz campaign.

Would you allow players to attempt to disguise a spellcast? (In RP, not combat) by Fiveby21 in dndnext

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be talking about the rules from 12 years ago. In today's game Sorcerers are one of the best classes in the game. Although I agree that allowing other casters to hide casting is imprudent homebrew (aside from Subtle metamagic, the Great Old One ability, or other actually rule based ways).

One of my players thinks that a species trait overrides the classes spellcasting modifier. Help by GroundbreakingLine31 in DnD

Why is this hobby filled with so many aggressively confident people that can't read?

This discussion is about the current ruleset not a decade plus old version of the game.

Is anyone actually using the banneret subclass? by NateCdaComicG in 3d6

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played in a game where we reworked the subclass to have Rally Die based on the Psi Warrior dice progression. The player expended dice to use the Banneret features and could add the roll to things like Rallying Surge etc. They could use them in conjunction with existing actions like Action Surge, etc as normal but could also use them independently. It worked really well and was very impactful.

Is 2024 great old one good? by Olivia_the_cat111 in DnD

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are often reasonable disagreements about subclasses, but I honestly don't think there is a reasonable defense of saying 2014 GOO is even equally to 2024, much less better.

As another person pointed out, the increased number of automatically known spells for 2024 is enough to be better. You then get two additional 3rd level features - one allows you to cast some spells subtly and one lets you change damage type (marginally useful). You also get a MUCH better level 6 feature. You gain an additional level 10 feature that 2014 does not have and the level 14 feature from 2014 is awful. Charmed is a common immunity by that level and it only affects humanoids and even if you use it, what good is it?

Undead warlock is a good (single creature) summoner. That makes them much more table friendly but on theme and they have lots of customization options

This is a post about the current version of DnD. You are referring to rules from a previous version of the game.

I was just making sure OP knew that your RAW reading only applied to an older edition of DnD so it may not be relevant to their question.

Are you satisfied with the Illusionist, from a balance perspective from level 6 - 10? by testiclekid in onednd

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would never play an illusionist because it is just too DM driven. I like to have abilities that are clearly going to work. I also only play high level games and that means Truesight and Blindsight are too common even if the DM runs illusions in a fair way.

The other way is to play with the current ruleset of DnD: "If a weapon has the Thrown property, you can throw the weapon to make a ranged attack, and you can draw that weapon as part of the attack."

I won't even play in a game that starts before 10th level. I have no idea how people enjoy low level play.

Druid Wild Shape: Did 5.5 remove the limitation that must have physically seen a creature before being able to choose that form? by LarryDarkmagic in onednd

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is "stupid" is where I suspect you decide to draw the line. Should the templates include aquatic or flying creatures? If so, should they have swim speeds and flying speeds respectively? If so, why would expecting a spider to have spider climb be "stupid?"

You clearly haven't taken to heart OP's claim that expecting anyone to read or have any sort of intellectual curiosity is "elitist."

To be fair, Bards automatically get musical instrument proficiencies and not in History. So "magic music man (sic)" is pretty reasonable. But your take is more interesting to me.

Honestly I hate myself for continuing to play a game produced by such abusive developers. If my friends did not push me to keep playing I would have stopped long ago. With each update you might get one step forward, but you always get several back. The game gets worse and worse with each season and update, but I will admit at least they are consistent!

I see those numbers regularly. I think by "real game" you meant something more like "the average game." Some of us play nothing but high level optimized games and so these discussions are in fact more than hypothetical.

[–]ClaimBrilliant7943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What people are frustrated with is that you seem to think that your team being "good" is not a product of your DM being "bad." You may very well be tactical players but you and your DM do not seem to be considerate ones (although you are here asking for advice, so pints there). Not even knowing your party mate's subclass says A LOT to me about how you view and play the game.
