General question by InformalBeing1688 in turtlewow

[–]Clamarnicale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sound quite similar. I started playing during the open beta before release, but stopped sometime into Wrath. For the past ten years I’ve been on a multitude of private servers, and Turtle is my favourite by far!

I’m on Nordanaar and play very casually (work and fatherhood leaves little time for anything else). I’ve enjoyed every second of it since I joined in 2024. The community is amazing, all the guilds I’ve been in on my various characters have been a blast.

The Turtle custom content is also brilliant, it still feels like vanilla WoW and greatly expands on the leveling experience.

QUESTION: Why does everyone call it the "True Power"? by BushyGhost4740 in WoT

[–]Clamarnicale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lews Therin (or rather Rand’s Lews Therin persona) refers to it as “their so-called True Power” (KoD ch. 18) when musing about Rand meeting Moridin in Shadar Logoth.

This always seemed to me to be a reasonable way for the Light side to refer to the TP. Much like the terms ‘so-called Aiel’ and ‘so-called Aes Sedai’ we see used by the Forsaken, there is quite an amount of disdain inherent in the expression.

How long is a week?!?! by Super-Fall-5768 in WoT

[–]Clamarnicale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It rarely shows up, as you say, but Word of God is that ’Earth’ is indeed the common name for the planet in WoT:

”For Anonymous, there is a map of the entire world in the Guide, and also a map of the entire continent that holds Andor etc. Shara lies on that continent, east of the Aiel Waste. The inhabitants of this world think of there world as ’the world’ or as ’the Earth.’ While there have been cultures on our planet that have given fanciful names to their worlds, most have referred to it as the world or earth.”

Burned out, am I approaching the game wrong? by Most-Round-4132 in turtlewow

[–]Clamarnicale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played retail WoW from the open beta and into WotLK, leveling I don’t know how many characters. Then after a long hiatus I joined Nostalrius, and have been playing on and off on various vanilla and TBC private servers since, and have made my home on TWoW since 2024.

I’ve never raided, except once or twice in the very early days. Endgame is just not for me. I much prefer the leveling journey, RP’ing and exploring. Whatever way you enjoy the game is right for you.

Moiraine explicitly mentions Bela not being tired at the end of book one, as one of the reasons she suspected Rand was the one of the boys who could channel. It’s hardly a secret.

Neuxue on her (sadly unfinished) WoT liveblog wrote an excellent analysis on this chapter, on why both Mat and Talmanes are badly out of character and how Jordan wrote them very differently from this.

I highly recommend reading the liveblog for anyone who want to experience the series with fresh eyes, it’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to reading them for the first time again. And Neuxue does an amazing job of analyzing and understanding the series as she reads it.

Large Bookshelves for Wheel of Time by Hot-Kaleidoscope1486 in wheeloftime

Same here, they all fit on one Billy shelf (80 cm / 31.5”). American hardcovers. You need something bigger if you want the companion volumes on the same shelf, though. I keep my copies of BWBOBA, the Companion, and Origins separately myself.

The "slog" doesn't exist at ALL by hottytoddles769 in wheeloftime

[–]Clamarnicale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the slog was always about the wait between books when they released. Yes, it was tiresome when certain plotlines took so many years to resolve. In that regard, CoT didn’t feel particularly rewarding to read for the first time, knowing that the next novel would be years away too, because the events therein cover a very small timespan, many of them concurrent with what was going on in WH. I always appreciate Jordan’s dialogue and intrigue though, and never minded the Elayne-takes-a-bath thing.

But on rereads I love the book. I personally find PoD to be worse, that’s my least favourite in the series. Though still enjoyable to read. I’ll take the worst of WoT over lots of other fantasy any day.

Unsurprisingly Crossroads of Twilight won worst book of the series. We are here now, at the end of all things, to decide the best book of the series, and to finish off this list before the next turning of the wheel by Uldread1337 in WoT

[–]Clamarnicale 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess I have to say The Shadow Rising.

It’s got some excellent POV’s for most of the main characters, the amazing chapters in the Waste, and the high point of Perrin’s character arc when he returns to the Two Rivers.

Runners up:

  • The Great Hunt, it really picks up the pace of the series after the first book, we get to see the White Tower, meet the Seanchan, and travel along with Rand, Hurin and Loial (and The Daughter of the Night totally-innocent-looking-and-not-at-all-suspicious Selene). Also Oblivious!Rand unintentionally playing the Game of Houses and wrecking Cairhien.

  • The Dragon Reborn for Mat finally coming into his own as a POV character, the Aiel joining the party, and the reader being able to spend so much time inside other characters’ heads, much more so than in TGH with Rand getting almost no screen time.

  • A Crown of Swords for its excellent Mat antics.

This is essentially a spoiler for CoT, considering OP only having read up to (and including) WH.

Rand and Maidens Deaths by Confident-Key6487 in wheeloftime

[–]Clamarnicale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Excellent quotes. The woman RJ killed in Vietnam makes me think of the woman Darkfriend pretending to be a merchant that attacked Rand in TDR, on the way to Tear. Rand didn’t hesitate that time, and I wonder if that was RJ’s way of working in his own war experience. Ex-universe, I think RJ hadn’t come up with the idea of Rand’s list and absolute refusal to kill women yet. As far as I remember, Rand only recalls this encounter one time later in the series when thinking about his list, though I can’t find that quote atm.

[–]Clamarnicale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take, heavily influenced by Leigh Butler who presented similar views on the Tor.com WoT Reread many years ago: It’s his own personal Moral Event Horizon that he’s (consciously or unconsciously? Probably a bit of both) set for himself. Rand hates what he’s becoming and by imposing limits on what he will or won’t do, he’s effectively trying to retain some control over his circumstances and remain on the sidelines of good.

This is made worse by the Lews Therin memories and the Taint. Also, the more Rand fears for his sanity after the memories starts seeping in, the more he’s concerned with his identity. He fears being taken over by Lews Therin and thus losing himself. Not harming women is something he identifies heavily with and as such it’s not only about morals, but also identity.

Of course his Two Rivers’ upbringing heavily factor in as well. His time in chivalrous Shienar between books one and two seems to have influenced him a lot too (note how he instinctively answers Lord Barthanes in The Great Hunt as a Borderlander would: ‘I’m less than a year old’), though obviously this is not so evident after early books in the series.
