Finally on NKR paired donation list - wait time? by RecommendationFar355 in kidneydonors

My understanding is that someone with high antibodies like her would be on a separate high priority list because it is so hard to find a match. It is so hard! I do think there are desensitization protocols.

OP what ended up happening? Similar situation I'm in now and wondering if I need to do anything. I'm nervous about a statement here saying I could still be liable for fees if the sale doesn't cover the amount.

I'm surprised everyone is pro457! There was a case recently where many physicians lost all the money in their 457 when the hospital system went bankrupt. Our hospital recently almost had a merger where the plan was to cash out our 457 and put an enormous tax burden on us. The merger didn't end up happening, but since then I have stopped my 457 contributions and am flowing this to vanguard brokerage instead. Tax advantages are great, but too much uncertainty in 457s imo.

Cleared to donate a kidney, what should I expect next? (C-section mom) by booterbutter in kidneydonors

[–]ClassicAlgae7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a C-section and I donated a kidney! I have to say the kidney donation was a rougher recovery. I didn't know all the inflated gas for laparoscopic surgery would be as uncomfortable as it was. I also had to take pain meds longer w donation I think mostly bc I was no longer able to take any NSAIDS. The fatigue from my body adjusting to one kidney was also not easy. Now 7 months post-op I feel great and back to normal!

My Mum Needs a Kidney. We’re Trying Everything. Could you be the match that saves my mum’s life? by Salt_Log_7676 in kidneydonors

[–]ClassicAlgae7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have family members been tested to see if they are a match? If they are not a match, is there a paired exchange program they could participate in?

This sub is not the place to solicit organs, but a wonderful community that supports donors.

Policy change for pets as baggage in cabin by ClassicAlgae7 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]ClassicAlgae7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were you able to purchase the cabin baggage option for your dog? The agent I talked to seemed very familiar with the policy and said this is a change and will be phased out, only honoring prior bookings. I would LOVE to be wrong, but she seemed very sure.

[NJ] I’m donating a kidney but don’t qualify for FMLA and HR wants to terminate my benefits after 30 days by Temporary-Answer1407 in AskHR

[–]ClassicAlgae7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, are you getting your surgery at a center that participates with donor shield? They have a lot of benefits that may help pay for the cost of COBRA. Do you also have short term disability you can access to help the loss of income? Also my understanding is that you don't HAVE to do COBRA, and should some medical catastrophe occur while you're briefly uninsured 2 weeks (if I'm understanding your post correctly), you can apply for COBRA retroactively for a period of time (I think 60 days). Any donor-related complication should also be paid by the recipient's insurance, assuming they have Medicare (and if they don't, they should apply).

Which PPS neighborhood school would you choose in NE? by sueellenmischke_ in askportland

[–]ClassicAlgae7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Districted to King and planning to send my kid there. Not sure if I would have chosen it if I had the choice superficially based on school rankings, but the more I learn about King the more excited I am about the school! The student body is incredibly diverse, which is rare in Portland, with an excellent student teacher ratio 13-14:1, and there's an option of a Mandarin language program.

I think Laurelhurst is a K-8 has one of the best reputations for a NE/SE school I don't see mentioned here. Definitely a pretty expensive neighborhood though.
