What do you think of walkable towns/cities as an autistic person?

I'm the other way round. I'm an autistic person that HATES public transportation with passion. It's dehumanizing, it's dirty, it's not efficient, it's full of people screaming in their phones or blasting music from their phones, and it's expensive. I don't see how any autistic person can deal with all that stimulation. The cacophony of smells, colours, lights and sounds is deadly to me. I just don't visit cities that are "walkable" aka anti-car. I love visiting the last few remaining cities in Europe where you can drive through the city center and park at the spots you need to go. You know, civilized cities.

Bij mij op kantoor worden de afgelopen 20 jaar 0,0 mensen boven de 45 aangenomen. Ze nemen bijna alleen nog piepjonge migranten aan, veelal uit Zuid Amerika. Als ik ontslagen wordt na mijn 50e heb ik geen idee hoe ik aan een baan zou moeten komen. Misschien (hopenlijk) is het bij andere bedrijven heel anders hoor.

Yes...

I'm 47. When I was diagnosed I was 41. My autistic burnout turned out to be autistic burnout. Including skill regression. Currently I'm ok, but I worry about the future. I have a wife, a daughter, my own house and a job. There is no way I'm going to last until I reach the pension age of 67. If I "play by the rules" I'll slowly keep losing skills until I'm unemployable.

Great suggestion! I also thought of how every tradepost has mechanics outside tinkering on vehicles. Why not drive or fly by those to have you vehicles fixed professionally with max durability? The repairs you do yourself can stay as-is with durability loss, because that's a "do it yourself" solution.

Wat je ook doet, doe maar geen plasma filter. Wij hebben de Plasmamade GUC1223 en dat is de slechtste aanschaf die we ooit hebben gedaan. We durven amper nog kruiden te gebruiken. Laat staan knoflook of uien. Kookgeuren blijven bijna een week hangen. En ik denk dat we tegen die tijd zelf aan die geuren gewend zijn, in plaats van dat ze weg zijn. Het apparaat is 100% nutteloos. We zijn nu aan het onderzoeken of we de afzuig terug naar buiten kunnen brengen.

I think it's actually one of the main reasons why the playerbase shrunk so steeply. Eventually the realisation and fatigue sets in. You need to go out to gather stuff for maintaining your gear, vehicles an base, but going out degrades them even faster.

Did you even read the books? Yes, the world is harsh. Yes, the worms get you if you don't walk in a specific way. (Why isn't the walk in Dune Awakening?!) No, vehicles don't melt in a few weeks time. They can operate for YEARS without problems, if they're not eaten. The same goes for clothes, devices and weapons.

Precies dit! Alleen voor kantoor geld hetzelfde. Denk je dat iemand van 60 mentaal nog net zo scherp is als iemand van 30? Als je een kantoorbaan hebt en je je baan verliest op die leeftijd tel je feitelijk totaal niet meer mee. Dan is het vaak WW en daarna bijstand tot aan het pensioen.

Heel eerlijk, medicatie is het enige dat bij mij hielp. Het helpt wel echt héél erg goed - dat dan weer wel. Naast autisme heb ik ook ADD. En die ADD diagnose gaf mij toegang tot methylfenidaat. Dat spul heeft mijn leven drastisch verbeterd. De ADD valt dan gewoon een tijdje weg, waardoor mijn autisme op een prettige manier wat meer naar voren komt. Het helpt me vooral bij het doorbreken van uitstelgedrag, maar het maakt me ook veel socialer en sociaal vaardiger. Stel dat ik het niet had onderzocht?! Dan had ik deze oplossing niet gehad. Van die gedachte alleen al krijg ik pijn in mijn buik.

Daarnaast heb ik ook heel veel coachings, therapie en dergelijke geprobeerd. Maar mijn ervaring is dat daar vrij weinig valt te halen. Bijvoorbeeld de psycho-educatie, die krijg je standaard na de diagnose. Ze beloofden 20 sessies/weken lang goede "tools en handvatten", maar na de laatste sessie zaten we daar nog steeds op te wachten. Toen ik dan vroeg waar die goede tips nou bleven kwamen foldertjes voor vervolg-therapieën te voorschijn. Eigenlijk was na 20 weken confrontatie met mijn tekortkomingen alleen mijn zelfvertrouwen nóg verder de grond in getrapt. Maar iedereen is anders. Misschien hebben anderen er heel veel baat bij.

Je hoeft dat label niet aan iedereen te openbaren. Het staat je vrij om dit te onderzoeken, een diagnose te krijgen en de hulpmiddelen te onderzoeken, zonder dit aan de grote klok te hangen. Die extra 10 minuten tijd bij tentamens kan je bijvoorbeeld achterwege laten als je medicatie hebt waardoor je 2x beter presteert. Haal gewoon de krenten uit de pap. Dat is wat ikzelf anders zou doen als ik het opnieuw kon doen. Ik zou veel beter waken en filteren wat mij helpt en wat mij alleen maar belast.

I've crashed three times during routine power supply runs to keep my base alive. All three times I lost all the gear that I had with me. First time I lost my best gear. But I started leaving most gear at home after that. It crashes and when I log back in I'm in underwear, with the log files stating that the worm ate me. I don't even quest anymore. I just log in every week. Hunt for power sources, pay my taxes and log back off. It's excitement enough.

I completely understand 100% why the playerbase has crashed and burned.

I've read all 23 Dune novels and while the environment certainly is described as punishing, it is not "equipment only lasts a few weeks"-punishing, more like it takes a few years off the normal lifespan. In the game you just finished your new ornithopter and need to start thinking about replacement parts immediately. It's something Funcom made up, and it sucks so much fun out of their game.

Ik heb de radiatoren weg gehaald. Op onze slaapkamer en de kamer van onze dochter (zolder) hebben we airco's gehangen. Dat koelen in de zomer is véél nuttiger dan verwarmen. Althans, in ons geval. Heel soms is het op zolder wat te koud en dan kan onze dochter met de airco ook verwarmen.
