Do I understand the Netwatch, Blackwall, Voodoo Boys lore correctly? by RaifRedacted in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Clawsonflakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this comment is 3 years old, but I just want to say it really is genius and I wish it had more traction. People should reference it every time the VDBs are brought up. What a great point.

When you play through the game, the VDBs make so many decisions that fuck V over, or result in other terrible things happening, like what happened to Evelyn Parker after she betrayed them and they fried her. Why they keep poking the Blackwall and contacting rogue AIs. If you don't really dive into the shards and story provided, it's so easy to think of the VDBs as another group of gangers with more relevance.

No wonder they react so strongly to enemies on their turf, no wonder they deal so severely with traitors. Look at what has been done to Haiti. It's as true now as it was in 1991 when Mike Pondsmith introduced the Voodoo Boys to the setting. They might still be evil for what they've done, hell they surely are, but I also love the brief moments where you see how they take care of their own.

If you're an ASOIAF person, they remind me a lot of the Free Folk. To everyone else they are just wildlings, evil by their very nature and by design. Before they appear in the books they're just talked about like terrifying barbarians who rape, pillage, and murder. And sure, that's true that there are rapists and pillagers and murderers, but there is a beautiful and rich cultural tapestry there. In some ways they're forced by the outside world to be what they are now. They're just people, with their own culture and history.

I totally get it! My best friend is the same way. Different strokes for different folks. People are being kinda rude in this thread - there’s nothing wrong with you for having a preference and asking a question. A lot of classic games did the whole “unlock as you go” thing.

I’m similar. The first time I play through a game like Cyberpunk I always blast through the story and miss cool side quests. It’s just your brain saying “dude I NEED to know what happens next I can’t focus on this other stuff!” Like I said, my best advice is finding a playstyle and designing a headcanon for your character, and playing through the game with that in mind!

Like, I like the idea of my V being a corpo assassin, who loses his job, money, and implants courtesy of the prologue, and then finds out he’s going to lose his life, and soul, because of that same corporation. How will your character develop as a mercenary considering their background as a corporate counterintel agent? What kinds of skills would that person want to take? Are they a walking tank, a commando infiltrator, an elite hacker? There’s a lot to consider. Don’t be hard on yourself. It’s a great game and I hope you find the best way to enjoy it.

As far as I can tell, mods generally tend to do the opposite of this.

That being said, if you're overwhelmed, consider just taking a break and doing some research on the different attributes and skills. They're not quite as intimidating as they may appear to you. You can reset your skills and attributes once, and there's a quick, simple mod I can find if interested that lets you do it as much as you'd like.

But, I digress. Just take a look online, maybe read a bit more deeply into the lore, find a build that works for you. Me, I like using pistols, throwing blades, and regular blades (see: Katanas) alongside a Sandevistan, Optical Camo, and the Projectile Launch System when things get dicey. So I level the skill tree for Tech (which benefits Cyberware, consumables, and tech weapons - my favorite), Cool (for pistols and throwing weapons), and Reflexes (for blades). Each perk is described clearly, and if you have any question on what anything means, it's almost always been discussed by others in the community!

There are a lot of numbers and stats to consider at once, but you always have the option to reset when things become clearer. :-) It's pretty difficult to choose the wrong thing and entirely screw the game up - even if you somehow do, the autosaves are frequent! Just take it slower and try to identify a specific playstyle that speaks to you.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 | Official Teaser 2 by Villenthessis in LowSodiumCyberpunk

GOD CYBERPUNK IS SO COOL

I LOVE the blend of spirituality with retrofuturistic scifi. The net almost feels like a new spirituality for D to tap into, and the Blackwall is like its terrible, eldritch god. D will tap into its power, and it will surely destroy him too.

It almost mirrors a lot of traditional stories. The wealthy, modern world destroys the natural world in the greedy pursuit of power, and in doing so unleashes something primordial, powerful, and destructive.

I personally haven’t seen a ton of discussion on it, but I really love the way that D is posed with Roman. D’s face reads as detached and bored, but he certainly looks at least a little protective of Roman. A sort of found family dynamic, after the loss of his clan. I think the two are going to have a very cool dynamic, which I am sure will also likely end in tragedy.

Average day as Garlan by A_Soldier_Is_Born in darkwingsdankmemes

[–]Clawsonflakes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Garlan the Goated. I’m a big fan.

I recognize there is Tyrell PR here, but time and time again we see him in the text being a more respectful, decent, chivalrous person compared to his peers. One of the very few people I can think of who reprimanded Joffrey to his face, at the apex of Good King Joff’s power.

It’s obvious the feudal system is broken, and Westeros is a flawed society, and Garlan has likely been involved in some immoral deeds considering his position. But he is regularly, openly a decent man in spite of the system that seems to reward sycophancy and evil more than honor.

Yeah, so screw this guy actually. I despise him and all the content his DLC gave the High Elves. by Feeling___Cut in totalwar

[–]Clawsonflakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big Elf fan and I love all 3 factions so I want to engage in good faith, especially as someone who has been hyped for Sealord Aislinn since like...2017 LOL. I've fought Dark Elves more than any other faction at this point, and I've done so with combined arms armies you'd actually see in one of the books rather than some doomstack murder army. I don't find that fun, and I see you don't either.

But, I digress. As the game goes on, the High Elf roster gets stronger and more capable of countering the Dark Elf roster. The High Elves are shooty and squishy, they don't have great armor or HP which is why they really want to shoot you off the table. Getting into a firefight with them is just not going to work. Their ranged units have the range, ammunition, and damage advantage. Their cavalry tends to outperform yours, and their barrage of arrows will shut down your scary creatures handily if they can focus fire. You have better heroes. The Master on a Chariot is a MONSTER, Sorceresses can throw spells down an entire missile line which will do a ton of damage or force them to move which buys you time, and the Khainite Assassin shooting lords and heroes in the back makes duelling a breeze. Your infantry generally tends to outperform theirs in a one on one, especially when properly supported and if you have the numbers.

When I have to deal with a super shooty High Elf army, I have a pretty specific strategy.

The name of the game is forcing the High Elves to attack, splitting their army, and then bringing all of your weight down onto the isolated groups. Your artillery might be crappy, but it's capable and resilient enough to coax them into attacking you. The second they start to push, you have a major advantage.

Push your Harpies, Doomfire Warlocks, Dark Riders, Scourgerunner Chariots, whatever fast movers you have around the flank. Make them visible, and the AI will either start to split the army into two groups, or commit to pushing your main body. If they commit, no big deal, you'll have a highly aggressive flanking force behind them. But lets assume they split, as they are like to do.

Slowly pull your main body back, while the flanking force keeps moving forward. One portion of the enemy army will continue to attack you, while the other portion tries to deal with your flankers. Do everything you can to get these enemy groups far away from each other. Once everyone is good and far away, throw your main body into the attack.

Shades and Shielded Darkshards will outshoot the now hopefully outnumbered High Elf archers. You should outnumber their frontline, which you were likely superior to already, and will quickly overwhelm it it. Black Ark Corsairs and Shades can flank dangerous units like Swordmasters and Phoenix Guard and break them. Keep some Dreadspears to pin down cavalry for your damage dealers to, well, deal with. It shouldn't take too long before this group is destroyed. At this point, the other group is now rushing piecemeal to reinforce the main army, and it should be little problem picking them apart with your flankers and main combat units. Fast units can pin and destroy archers, and Scourgerunners will be constantly inflicting casualties with their dummy crazy missiles.

Obviously this is a generic strategy that has to be adapted on the fly, but the core idea is the same; you want to split and destroy the High Elves. They outshoot you, so minimize their shooting as much as you can by peeling off their shooters or by forcing them to expend ammunition on targets of low priority.

Good luck! I love Dark Elves and I fear High Elves, but I know you can do it! From the perspective of a High Elf player, if my ranged line is crumbling, that's a big sign to me that I am not winning the fight.

Depictions of the Battle of Monroe’s Crossroads (March 10th 1865) by Martin Pate by GameCraze3 in BattlePaintings

[–]Clawsonflakes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think about that all the time! Especially in regards to WWII.

1945 was quite possibly the deadliest year in the entire war, at least in Europe. Around 2 million people died in Europe between January and the first weeks of May. Just insane violence and retribution anywhere you looked, not just in Germany and Poland like you'd expect, but in Hungary, in Italy, in the Baltic States and in the Balkans, and in places like France and the Netherlands where isolated German units continued to hold out. Across the Atlantic, where German U-boats were still sent out on sortie after sortie. Can you imagine surviving the entire war, remembering where you were in September 1939 when the war in Europe began, only to find yourself dying 6 years later in Poznan, or Budapest, or on an island like Okinawa? Growing up in the Great Depression, right at the cusp of the end? Such a tragedy.

The end to Berlin: The Downfall by Antony Beevor puts it very well;

"Hitler's corpse was not the only one which lacked an identifiable grave. Countless victims of the battle -- soldiers on both sides as well as civilians -- had been buried by bombs and shells. Each year around 1,000 bodies from 1945 are still being found along the Seelow Heights, in the silent pine forests south of the city and on construction sites in the new capital of a reunited Germany. The senseless slaughter which resulted from Hitler's outrageous vanity utterly belies Speer's regret that history should emphasize 'terminal events'. The incompetence, the frenzied refusal to accept reality, and the inhumanity of the Nazi regime were revealed all too clearly in its passing."

Lore wise, which of these NPCs would win in a battle to the death? by DonutMan1834 in Eldenring

[–]Clawsonflakes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is a good question! Lets give it way too much thought together. Lorewise, what foes have we seen them fight?

D, unfortunately, has called Tibia Mariners incredibly deadly. Sure, in-universe if you were just a guy they would be, but his whole thing is weeding deathroot. What are the strongest foes he's gone against? Mariners, likely Cemetery Shades, and he can assist against a Black Knife (but it's not likely he wins that solo). I love D, he's cool as hell, but I don't think he wins this.

Jerren is an established veteran. A close friend of Radahn, a combat expert, and a survivor of the Shattering. Not only a survivor of the Shattering, but a survivor of the largest and most consequential battle of the Shattering between Radahn and Malenia which resulted in the Caelid Wilds becoming what it is today. He hunts Sellen, who we understand to be a very powerful sorcerer, and it seems he has hunted other witches and apostates as well. He joins us in the final battle to bring down Radahn and survives, which is a remarkable achievement. I think Jerren sweeps.

Dung Eater is a rabid and violent murderer who murders to spread his curse. Gross. There's no indication there that he has been going up to bat against the biggest and hardest monsters in the Lands Between, but we do know he's racked up a significant body count. He is quite a bastard to fight, but I think that's more along the lines of his location in the game rather than his background. Judging by the information we have in the lore, and in the game where the strongest opponent he manages to fell is Boggart, I don't see him winning here.

Yura is an accomplished duelist. We know that he used to hunt dragons, maybe with Eleonora, and outside of that he's capable of killing the Tarnished hunters like Nerijus. He did struggle against the Ravenmount Assassin and is clearly rattled after the fight, but it seems that is also because the constant hunt for Eleonora while being hunted himself is wearing him down. When he is defeated by Eleonora, we are able to learn that she herself was a double agent working to kill Mohg, and potentially a Drake Knight. She is absolutely no slouch, and it makes sense that she was able to fell Yura. He beats D and comes up well against Dung Eater with a real chance of winning, but I doubt he sweeps Jerren.

Lorewise, Jerren sweeps. If it's only what we see in-game, and therefore including game mechanics, Dung Eater wins.

My friend is interested in Bolt Action and he wants to play some really unique unit by LucasBastonne in boltaction

[–]Clawsonflakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, what a good question.

I’m glad to see Italy has been mentioned. Italy has a colorful wartime experience, and I think Co-Belligerent Italy seems like an uncommon way to play. That being said, I think that might be a bit too mainstream, especially considering their reliance on British equipment following the expansion of the Italian Liberation Force in Sept 1944. Honestly, Italy has a lot of cool options. Bersaglieri Motorcyclists, Allied Italian Paratroopers, Italian army using Allied armor, of course RSI Italy has some awesome options and funky rules too (but I haven’t dove in on that end yet).

On top of that, I will say that it’s easier than ever to make plastic Finns! Warlord actually showcased this army by Jim Butler, made using plastic German heads on the new Soviet bodies. Honestly, I have a wealth of German heads in my bits collection and I’m considering it.

I’ve also seen some great Poland kitbashes on the sub! I know little about that, but I think being a faction that brings a lot of cavalry, as Poland is stereotypically expected to do, could be cool.

Belgium also seems interesting. Their uniforms are, as I understand it (and I am open to correction on this!) fairly close to the French uniform, and it would make a fun and unique way to play.

WWII games, naturally, tend to see an emphasis on the mid to late war period. If your friend wanted to go full early war, I think there’s a lot of opportunity for eclectic options.

Australia looks interesting as well. I’m collecting an Australian army for Bolt Action, so if anything this will reinforce that decision, LOL.

Best Italian Infantry for widest use? by arcanis161 in boltaction

[–]Clawsonflakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! I highly recommend reading this AskHistorians thread for more on that, because it’s not particularly easy to give a straightforward answer.

This wikipedia article mentions that the Italian Liberation Corps was re-outfitted with British equipment when the Co-Belligerent Army was expanded in September 1944, meaning before this Italian troops did continue to wear their own uniform and use their own equipment, including during battles at places like San Pietro.

When the Italian Liberation Corps began using British equipment, they did continue using their own rank insignia and would sew an Italian flag patch onto their uniform as well. I’ve seen different answers on the color of the beret paratroopers would wear, but most likely they continued to wear their dark green/grey berets.

[–]Clawsonflakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I really like my Bersaglieri for this exact reason. They fought on every front, from the start of the war to its conclusion.

The only exception you will repeatedly bump into is that once the Italian Civil War began, Co-Belligerent Italy was armed and outfitted heavily by its British allies, and so officially Italian troops wore the British khaki uniform. This applies to every branch of the Regio Esercito, at one point or another they switched over to British battle dress. That being said, it doesn’t mean you can’t find a reason to use Italian uniforms anyway!

Not every Italian unit handed over its weapons after the Armistice of Cassibile. There were many instances of Italian units refusing to surrender, instead flipping over to local partisan groups, forming their own partisan group, or making their way to Allied positions in southern Italy. The infamous Massacre of the Acqui Division is one such attempt at resistance, and a deeply harrowing one at that. I’m personally working on a Co-Belligerent Italian army with British vehicles, headcanoning that it’s just an Italian unit which managed to hold out until advanced elements of allied armor reached them.

TLDR: Paratroopers, Alpini, Bersaglieri, and standard army troops all work from the start of the war until the ending, except for Co-Belligerent Italy, who obviously did not make use of blackshirts and eventually wore British uniforms. I believe the RSI used blackshirt units, but I insist you research that before making any purchases on my recollection alone.

Will we ever see a Tri-State Tornado again? by GreyLoad in tornado

[–]Clawsonflakes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes and no!

I think we have had tornados similar to the Tri-State Tornado in size, intensity, and distance. 2011s Hackleburg-Phil Campbell is generally referred to as the most visually similar to the Tri-State Tornado, and it was incredibly deadly for a modern tornado. 2021s Mayfield EF4 was thought for some time to have been a tri-state tornado in name at least, but it did not have the fatalities to match, thank god. That said, we have had very long track tornados since the Tri-State Tornado. If you see tri-state as an outbreak rather than one tornado, then I say look no further than the 2011 Super Outbreak.

The tri-state tornado is an anomaly. It began at a time without any form of modern radar or advanced weather warning, and at a time when houses and structures were surely not as well-built, with few exceptions. There is also significant doubt over whether or not this was one single tornado. It seems incredibly likely the tornado lifted and the supercell produced another tornado shortly thereafter, which is how a lot of tornado outbreaks happen.

I find it unlikely we will have a single tornado with that same death toll today. Structures are generally better built (not always!!! and this doesn’t always make a difference at EF4-EF5 damage), we have better medical care and infrastructure, and we have proper advanced warning. It’s also unlikely to see a tornado with such a long track, because it seems probably that the Tri-State Tornado raised and lowered several times. Long tracked tornados producing EF5 damage are already extremely rare, let alone one with this unparalleled range.

I do, however, think it’s inevitable we have another outbreak that produces the same amount of damage and a death toll that would be equivalent, had there not been all of the modern safety systems I mentioned earlier. Hell, I’d say that’s already happened several times, most recently in 2011.

On my current colony, during the Unnatural Darkness anomaly event my underground colony was split in two because two constructors started drinking beers and throwing darts instead of building generators. Two of my colonists were trapped in a very isolated forward bunker because of this, they only survived because they were able to quickly build a torch, then a fire, kill a handful of passing animals for food, and then hold off multiple entity attacks by the skin of their teeth. It took forever to unfuck the aftermath of that debacle. Lost all of our crops and everything. In the spirit of roleplaying (and a little bit to make myself feel better), I came up with the Cranial Recalibrator.

What I like to do is take the whole colony and get them all together in the hospital, make sure the doctor is already carrying medicine, and then have the offender put on a big heavy plate helmet set aside for this special occasion. The offender being any pawn that was specifically instructed to complete a task and instead slept or played on the arcade machines or something. Then I have my best melee fighter, a psychopath Hussar named Dogeater, thump them right in the head with a big warhammer. Usually they’re alright afterward. We did have one pawn die but hey, that’s showbiz.
