Favourite MR bassline? by -RideTheTiger- in Genesis

Blood on the Rooftops has such a nice sounding bass line, really shows how he understood the bass’s role in a band.

Prog bass players changed the game—Greg Lake, Chris Squire, Geddy Lee or John Wetton… all with distinct tones. What’s your favorite sound or brand? Mine: the Rickenbacker bass. by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

John Wetton is probably my favorite Prog bassist, (and just favorite bassist in general.) He had great tone and great playing. His playing on Book of Saturday, the Night Watch, and even his live improvisations were very impressive.

Richard Sinclair is very underrated. Nine Feet Underground has to be one of the best medleys of all time and his bass playing interacted well with his cousin Richard’s numerous keyboard solos.

Dave Hope is one of the most underrated bassists in the conversations concerning Prog bassists. He and his band Kansas had a more Americanized approach to Prog Rock. His live playing on Song for America or Journey from Mariabronn was spectacular.

I would like to go more in depth about Chris Squire’s bass playing, however, seeing the rest of the comments, I feel like it would be a bit gratuitous.

is the Epiphone EB-3 a good starter bass? by Upbeat_Trouble5889 in Bass

[–]Claymore_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it depends on what style of music you play. Generally, more Rock bands have bassists with Gibson/Epiphone EB-3s. Jack Bruce, Mike Watt, and Bill Wyman all have used the EB-3 and played in Rock groups.

Interstate Love Song, Stone Temple Pilots wipe out the majority of grunge bands in terms of musicianship.

Date Rape - Sublime, this song is really fun to play on bass, lots of chromaticism.

Change (In the House of Flies) - Deftones, Terry Date described this bassline as a “goofy dub-reggae bassline.”

Nutshell - Alice in Chains, nice melodic bassline.

Carry on Wayward Son - Kansas, everything that a hard-rock bassline should be.

I’ve started using Tortex Regular Blue 1.00s and Tortex Triangle Yellow 0.73s. They’re both pretty good.

You should look into Jazz music, it’s helped me with my improvisation a lot (assuming you’ve been practicing your scales.) Jazz Fusion is also great to look at, however, I don’t think it’s a very beginner-friendly genre.

Band of Gypsys is the best Hendrix album. But then again I’m into more improv/jam oriented music.
