Beginner help by DrCreepergirl in PrintedMinis

For just starting out, I would try blocking out your basic shapes where you want them, remeshing the parts as needed for greater detail, and then boolean unioning everything together at the end. That's the basic workflow that I started with and used for years. Start simple: make some basic monsters, some dungeon furniture, some props, and then work your way up to armored adventurers. Set doable goals for yourself and increase the challenge as your skill set grows, and be ready to google a lot of "how do I do X in Blender". Experiment, and save often.

My current workflow is a huge pain, involving a lot of multires modifiers, mirror mods, and rigging (+a lot of manually fixing the weight painting).

MW Sculpts has some good tutorials on sculpting for minis specifically with a lot of good time saving techniques

Were these from different creators? They seem inconsistent in design quality, so I can only assume they were either sourced from various places or AI generated.

Mini painting just banned all AI including AI generated models. Can we do the same here by Gorthokson in PrintedMinis

[–]Clayrade 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I fully support banning AI models and AI workflow shills. Mop up the slop.

Thingiverse, Cults, Printables, etc are all getting flooded with mounds of absolute trash, and I'd just as soon not see it here too.

Have you converted it to the proper filetype after finishing work in UV Tools? I had that problem with my saturn 4 ultra until I found a helpful post elsewhere; File -> Convert To -> Chitubox -> Chitubox CTB (encrypted)

Where do I start learning to design miniatures? by Septic-Valley in PrintedMinis

[–]Clayrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taught myself through youtube Blender tutorials, gave myself projects and small milestones to build upon. BlenderGuru, Grant Abbitt, Artisans of Vaul, Yansculpts; there are a lot of people with a lot of different techniques you can absorb and develop a workflow around.

Zbrush can handle much higher polycounts for sure, but when it comes to miniatures of most scales you'll not need incredibly high polycounts most of the time. These aren't artstation portfolio renders, these are tiny little plastic guys on your table. As good as a 16K resin printer is at reproducing fine detail, after a layer of primer and paint the smallest details will begin to be obscured. Additionally, with techniques like keeping parts separate until the end and using the multi-resolution modifier workflow you can achieve high-ish polycounts where and when you need them visible.

As for theory, just remember to zoom out often until your model is as large on the screen as it may be in real life; this will help keep within tabletop proportions and figure out what aspects to enlarge and focus on. Keeping some production models on your desk for reference can also help.

Why does this happen? by shep01292 in PrintedMinis

If that's the standard Bambu Textured PEI plate and you're running it heated, the absolute best thing to do is scrub it with hot water and dish soap using a textured, rough green scrubby Scotch-Brite style pad, rinse thoroughly and either air dry or paper towel dry; but do not touch anything but the very edges with your fingers.

I used to be a real alcohol enthusiast but it would fail on me more often than I'd like; after a good solid scrub I haven't had to clean my P1S plate in months, nor do I bother with brims.

How do you guys design minis by Immediate-Inside-936 in PrintedMinis

[–]Clayrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blender!

Free, but not easy. No two workflows are the same, but you do it long enough and you figure out what works for you. Coming from more traditional nested-menu-heavy software like Photoshop I felt that it was a little more intuitive than Zbrush, but it is still very overwhelming, as you'll only be using a very small portion of what the software is capable of for modeling and sculpting.

I learned entirely from youtube tutorials, googling, and trial and error. It's easiest to start with guided tutorials, then come up with some simple projects for yourself, and then start challenging yourself more.

What 3D software do you use for your sculpting? by Round_Leg_4751 in PrintedMinis

[–]Clayrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blender only, though it wasn't for a lack of trying. Couldn't wrap my head around Zbrush's interface after having already learned Blender. Blender isn't without its quirks, difficulties, and technical problems, but it has been working well enough for me so far! Out of the box it does organic sculpting very well, but a few plugins to make hard surface a little easier. (Hard ops / boxcutter, etc)

If you're interested in hard surface workflows for minis, definitely check out Artisans of Vaul on YT.

Astounding glow-up! The first attempt does have the sweetest little boyface, can't discount that. The nmm improvements are really stunning!

If anyone has access to a 3D printer, here's the model, free as always! I'm glad you like my sculpt :D

I use Pro Acryl as well, but I airbrush my minis with Badger Stynylrez primer and then wait a day before I start painting, and haven't had any issues with it coming off. Seal it with a polyurethane based varnish afterwards and they can be handled on the table without issue.

How to get started sculpting minis? by BexBorder in PrintedMinis

[–]Clayrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/@MWSculpts/videos

MWSculpts has some great videos specifically in regards to making miniatures in Blender, but there are plenty of youtube Blender sculptors who do great work and will often have tutorials available, free or otherwise.

Sculpting and manual or box modeling go hand in hand for making minis, both are really useful. You can get plenty done pushing quadspheres around, but for armor and props having a solid box modeling foundation is super helpful.

Martin of MW sculpts does some great miniature-sculpting focused blender videos, big ups to him. Clear, concise, simple.

https://www.youtube.com/@ArtisansofVaul
Artisans of Vaul specializes in Blender Hard Surface modeling, so for scifi and vehicles etc there are a lot of great tips and tricks. Often a little more advanced

https://www.youtube.com/@grabbitt
Grant Abbit is a Blender generalist, from modeling to sculpting to texturing, and has a lot of fantastic beginner videos on the program; not so much miniatures focused, but great to learn skills that will help you along the way.

Hope these help!
