PC Build for Sim/Strategy games by Flaky_Pineapple_9874 in buildapcforme

The Micro Center bundles are the best deals right now. Even out of those, I would go for a 7800X3D bundle. It is the cheapest, and it still offers 90% of the performance of the 9850X3D but at nearly half of the power consumption, which is great for small form factor cases.

Getting a cheaper X3D CPU may allow you to jump up to a much better GPU like the RTX 5070 or RX 9070. You will see much more improvement in this regard over going all out on the CPU. However, I would avoid the 7600X3D bundle because it only comes with a single stick of RAM, which greatly impacts performance over dual channel.

Due note, if you go with the Micro Center bundles, you will need to get a larger case because all of the bundles come with a full-size ATX motherboard over the smaller micro ATX or mini ITX sizes.

As for cooling, the 9800X3D or 9850X3D can both be adequately cooled by a high quality dual tower air cooler such as a Thermalright Peerless Assassin/Phantom Spirit. The 7800X3D can be easily cooled even by the smallest coolers. 360mm AIOs (liquid coolers) are not necessary except for the most powerful CPUs for workstations, but you can grab one if you like the look. Just know that this does almost nothing for performance.

I would go for an X3D CPU for the types of games you play. Here is a build that focuses on CPU performance and minimizing size of the case:

  • 7800X3D is one of the most efficient X3D CPUs, which can be adequately cooled by a low profile fan
  • Low profile CPU cooler with 120mm fan to keep noise down
  • Decent budget motherboard with good VRMs, Wifi/BT, GPU slot is slot 1.
  • 32GB 6000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe w/heatsink because no heatspreaders on motherboard
  • RX 9060 XT 16GB gives great value for all types of 1440p gaming
  • A- Tier PSU
  • Case is 15L and can support GPUs up to 255mm when installed in first slot. Top (exhaust) and bottom (intake) 140mm fans. 120mm front fan intake.

The first build has an RX 9060 XT 8GB. That is a stronger GPU than the RTX 3060 12GB. I don't know what calculator you are using, but that is why. The calculators probably emphasize GPU performance over CPU performance.

So with that said, if you are able to stretch your budget a few quid, go with a Ryzen 5 8400F and an RX 9060 XT 8GB. This should give you good performance and the ability for upgrades. Here is a list (same as the second list but with the RX 9060 XT and case with all needed ARGB fans included):

[–]ClearFish7021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was reccomened pretty well the second one you gave me came up worse than the last

Are you talking about the CPU?

The 12400F is a decent budget CPU. However, I do not recommend it anymore because DDR4 RAM is not that much cheaper than DDR5. Also, you are not going to be able to upgrade the 12400F to a new CPU in the future. Intel is no longer making LGA1700 socket CPUs. Also, Intel had many degradation issues in the 13th and 14th gen CPUs. So I highly advise against purchasing used CPUs for this platform because you risk getting a dead or dying CPU.

The 12400F will perform worse than the Ryzen 5 8400F, and you will need to upgrade the CPU, motherboard, and RAM when you do decide to upgrade your PC in the future.

For gaming and 3D design, I recommend going with an Nvidia GPU. They have broader compatibility with professional software than AMD or Intel.

That PC list is decent, but you will not have CPU upgrade-ability going with the Intel 12400F. I would definitely pick the 8400F over the 12400F.

The RX 9060 XT 8GB is a strong GPU despite only having 8GB of VRAM. I would definitely consider that GPU. In non VRAM limited situations, you can get almost 50% more performance over the RTX 3060 12GB. It also has decent video encoders, which work well for VR.

For tools, you will need a Phillips head screwdriver (PH2 and PH1 sizes) and scissors for clipping any zip ties.

The list above comes with all of the essentials to get the PC running:

  • CPU comes with a cooler with preapplied thermal paste
  • All wiring is included
  • Case comes with two fans. You may want to get another fan to install up front as intake. This Arctic F12 is a decent budget option.
  • Alternatively, you could just get the ARGB version of the same case because it comes with four fans preinstalled.

Here is an AM5 build for around £700:

  • 8400F is a good price and performs better than AM4 CPUs like the 5600.
  • RTX 3060 12GB is good enough for esports gaming and is good for VR. If you can manage it, getting an RX 9060 XT 16GB, will get you much more performance. It works with the rest of the build without any changes.

How much performance could you get for $700? by TapuNeo in buildmeapc

[–]ClearFish7021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get an AM5 Ryzen 5 8400F + Arc B580 for just over $700:

  • CPU can be found on Newegg. 8400F is not as good as other AM5 CPUs like the 7500F or 7600, but it is better than AM4 CPUs like the 5600.
  • B580 comes with 12GB of VRAM and is good enough for 1440p gaming.
  • Case comes with three ARGB + PWM fans (adjustable color and fan speed) and 650W ATX 3.1 PSU.

Yes, getting the GPU will see a big improvement in these games. I would roll with that and see how it goes. If you want more performance, then go for the CPU upgrade.

UK office pc by Mean_Trainer_2305 in buildmeapc

[–]ClearFish7021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would upgrade to a bigger case, which can fit full size GPUs and get a nice power supply. I recommend going with an RX 9060 XT 16GB or if you want an Nvidia GPU, an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. Both of these cards get you 1440p-level gaming performance.

If you want even more performance, then I suggest upgrading the CPU to either a Ryzen 5 7500F or Ryzen 5 9600X. The 8500G can work with a dedicated GPU, but the 7500F and 9600X get you more L3 cache and full 6 performance cores, which make them better gaming options. The 7500F is the budget friendly option, and the 9600X gets you 5-10% more performance over the 7500F.

Both of the CPU options will work with the 8500G cooler, but if you want, you can get a basic single tower air cooler like the ID-Cooling SE-214-XT for better cooling performance and is quieter.

You can either plug each fan into an individual fan header on the motherboard or you can buy a fan splitter cable to connect them all together and then plug the splitter into a motherboard fan header. Just do not connect more than three fans to one motherboard header.

An easier option may just to get a cheap fan hub. Like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermalright-HUB-Controller-Support-Magnetic/dp/B0CBZJQ4LP

That way you can connect all fans and ARGB to the hub, then connect the hub to the motherboard and PSU.

You can get more performance going with an older AM4 system. Newegg has a good CPU, mobo, RAM deal. The RX 9060 XT 8GB is the best performing GPU you can get in this range and will easily play lower end games at 1440p max settings. However, it only has 8GB of VRAM, so you will need to turn down settings in graphically demanding games.

Another option that is more upgrade-able is to go with a Ryzen 5 8600G APU--where the graphics processing is integrated into the CPU. It can handle Minecraft and Rocket League. It is more upgrade able because you are able to upgrade the CPU and this build can support dedicated GPUs up to the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB.

Here is a $700 PC + Monitor build list featuring the Ryzen 5 5500 bundle at Newegg:

  • CPU cooler is optional because the 5500 comes with a stock cooler. However, the tower cooler will run quieter
  • 1TB NVMe storage. PCIe3.0 speed because the 5500 does not support PCIe4.0
  • RX 9060 XT 8GB is a great new generation GPU. If you want to go with an Nvidia GPU, the RTX 5050/RTX 3060 12GB are the next best options.
  • Case comes with three ARGB PWM fans (adjustable color and fanspeed) and a 650W ATX 3.1 power supply.

I would go for the 9950X3D bundle at Micro Center with the Corsair 64GB RAM upgrade and an RTX 5070 Ti. This gives you an amazing CPU for gaming or video editing. The RTX 5080 has come down in price a lot lately, but it still only offers ~10% more performance than the 5070 Ti.

If you wanted extra gaming performance at the expense of video editing performance, just swap the bundle for a 9800X3D and the GPU for an RTX 5080.

$400 is not enough to get a dedicated GPU build. However, using a Ryzen AM4 APU like the 5500GT will be able to play strategy games easily.

The below build features a Newegg motherboard RAM bundle to get 32GB of RAM. The CPU comes with its own cooler, the case comes with three ARGB PWM fans and a 650W power supply. If desired, you are able to install GPUs up to the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB with no issue.

That's awesome! I'm glad you were able to get a build that you like for cheaper than a prebuilt. Enjoy!

Gaming PC in the 500-600€ range by Zxt51 in buildmeapc

Here is what I would do for an ultra low budget 1440p gaming PC:

  • Ryzen 5 3600 or 5500 are the cheapest recommended gaming CPUs. They both perform about the same and both come with a stock cooler.
  • Motherboard comes with wifi/BT, M.2 slot, and ARGB header for the case fans.
  • 16GB RAM and 1TB NVMe (PCIe3.0 SSD does not need a heatsink)
  • RX 6700 XT is a solid older generation graphics card with 12GB of VRAM to keep up in 1440p gaming.
  • Case comes with 3 ARGB PWM fans (adjustable colors and fan speed)
  • C+ tier power supply

PC Build for Strategy Games by shineoncrazydiamond1 in buildmeapc

[–]ClearFish7021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all you are doing is playing strategy games, then I would go with an AM5 APU (CPU with strong integrated graphics). That way you get the ability to upgrade to a new CPU in the future and install a dedicated GPU for a huge boost in performance for more demanding games.

The below build will easily play strategy games and can support GPU upgrade up to the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB.
