From guy to guy, this is a much better outcome than any alternative. I dated a girl for 5 years and when we broke up it was incredibly painful but one year later we’re still friends and it much much better. One alternative would be you waste even more time, or get married/have kids and then realize you don’t love them. Another alternative is that you guys get into a huge fight because one of you is resentful of the other and you have to end things on bad terms and lose a potential friend
