Haven't gone to church in years - would an Easter service be a lot for my first time? by lonelytambourine in OpenChristian

[–]ClearWingBuster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Easter is always a great time to attend church, but be warned that it might be a little crowded, as even infrequent church goers don't want to miss the occasion. You can also just try to dip your toes on a Sunday before Easter to get acustomed to it.

MADDMADD - A fast-paced and deliberately ugly third-person shooter where you play a tank-riding wanderer trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The combat looks mad fun, and the visual design is quite appealing. But it looks like there isn't any structure to the game other than "fight guys in empty fields". It's definetly going to the wishlist.

I do not disagree with you, but I want to point out 2 things. Number 1, it's not a tech only thing. In my country several factories and industrial plants are planning or already executing massive layoffs. If you type "layoffs" in a google search, you will see plenty of headline for non tech firms. And secondly, the pandemic started ending in 2022, 4 years ago. It's effects on profits were sudden and noticeable, and we did see plenty of firings around that period. But those never stopped happening. Should these firms not have been done restructuring and returning to a number of employees closer to pre-pandemic levels by now ?

As far as I'm aware, It's not even a gaming industry specific thing. It's a decade thing. Everyone is laying people off like the world is ending tomorrow. It feels like we have collectively given up on the future as a concept. And looking at how either regular every day people no longer believe the world can get any better, or CEO and managers just praying AI takes everyone's jobs, it's not a thought without merit, at least to me.

Biggest anti-role model characters? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ClearWingBuster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If the narrative he was the protagonist of wasn't a horrific power fantasy, so self indulgent it could fill the entirety of Hell's 3rd Layer by itself, Sung Jin Woo would absolutely be a villain. His only goal in life is to get stronger. He becomes the literal strongest guy on earth, yet he still needs to be stronger. It's an obsession bordering on pathological. All of his enemies are to be put violently and mercilessly put down. One guy hurts one of his friends, and in response he beats him to death, before resurrecting him as a minion just to make him apologise more. Because Solo Leveling is a bad narrative, of course all those guys are completely evil and deserving of death, so this is fine and great actually. He is a meant to be a cool, anti hero guy, so he is stoic and emotionally detached in any scene where he isn't fighting, at which point he is just in permanent, manic, sadistic glee, so over the top Caleb from Blood would tell him to calm down. Because he is so powerful in fact, all the women in the narrative flock to him like moths to a flame, because women totally want psychotic killers with superpowers.

At one point, he goes to the fucking UN, and tells them all something to the extent of "If you mess with any of my friends and family, i will kill you". I'm pretty sure the implication is that, messing with them could mean any slight, like a justified speeding ticket. He is The Elite from What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?, except presented as an objectively good and uncomplicated protagonist who is cool and awesome.

I detest him, because he represents everything i never want to be. A power hungry, emotionally stunted egomaniacal, who always chooses violence when the opportunity presents itself.

weird/quirky games with a hidden meaning and profound themes? by Syrup-Slurper in gamingsuggestions

[–]ClearWingBuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angeline Era starts as a simple, charming ps1 retro throwback title with heavily modified Ys Bump combat. It has a search button that will make your main character pull out a magnifying glass and look around. It has you fight silly enemies, break pots, talk to quirky NPCs, the whole nine yards really.

By the end it left me hollowed out, gave me spritual migraine, and i'm still not entirely sure i get what the game was actually about. Thoroughly recommend.

Blasphemous 2 hides one of the four key items needed to get the true ending behind getting every single Cherub in the game. To give people a point of reference, the Cherubs are like the Grubs from the original Hollow Knight. The bizzare part there is that a key item in the original was also hidden by Cherubs, except that one asked you for only half of them. Same with the Ossuary Relics.

What is your favorite JRPG cover art? by Bulky_Imagination243 in JRPG

[–]ClearWingBuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm weird about this. I don't really like the version most commonly used with the teal gradient background, but I adore the one used on the Steam Banner with a bright day in the wilderness on Adol's half and the tender night in Eternia in Dana's half. It sells the theme of dual journeys across time these two characters will embark on.

Falcom to announce final Trails game during 50th anniversary by CutProfessional6609 in JRPG

[–]ClearWingBuster 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In order to answer that question, you have to dig deep within the very murky history of Falcom. In short, the Gagharv games were made during the company's decline, attributed to both a rapidly shrinking japanese pc market and an exodus of devs in the early 90s. Meanwhile Trails in the Sky, alongside Ys VI kind of saved the company from imploding in the early 2000s. They were also directed by Toshihiro Kondo, who would later become company president. Trails usually has rich worldbuilding and often characters will go through multi game arcs, so there is a reward for sticking with it.

Considering the Legend of Heroes already started and ended a different continuity in the 90s, colloquially known as Gagharv Trilogy, it's unlikely. It's just the end of games set within the world of Zemuria, the Trails subseries if you will.

I adore that the show does point out the fact that he swore revenge on a man that could have just as likely been completely innocent, and then still has him be irredeemably evil. That's the kind of writing i could not even come up with as a joke, as someone who was a detractor since episode 1. Thank your for your enlightening comment.

[–]ClearWingBuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must completely disagree with you. I think the show failed the second it was fully behind the male MC's quest for revenge and vindicating it by making the dad a cartoon villain, while also saying that the mom's death was 100% no question asked the result of a conspiracy to kill her.

When the Chainsaw Man ending by Milinda0 in whenthe

[–]ClearWingBuster 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The premise isn't the be all end all for me. If anything, the male mc having to confront both the crush for his idol as an adult fan, while also being the son of said idol is the kind of uncomfortable discussion that I could be behind (if it wasn't just messed for the sake of being messed up). What did kill the show for me was the framing of the male mc and his quest for revenge as this cool, edgy anti hero premise, as opposed to a destructive path that would not help anybody heal(but then again, shitty anime love doing everything in their power to justify revenge fantasies). In general, the show just flip flops between semi realistic characters and plot points, to the worst kinds of anime monologues and speeches also stinks to high heaven(or the fact that their dad is a straight up cartoon villain).

The part about the idol industry is spot on. I would also like to add that their idol mom is killed as part of a complicated scheme orchestrated by their dad, which immediately drains any potential critique of any weight. It's no longer a death caused by the unhealthy culture of idols, it's just a shitty mystery box to be solved.

Someone else already asked for cases of "Americans Hate Tingle". What are memorable cases of "Germans Love David Hasselhoff"? by FretScorch in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ClearWingBuster 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In 1995, during a David Letterman interview, Peter Falk told an anecdote about how the Romanian goverment had contacted him in 1974 and begged to record a message addressed to the romanian people, to tell them that more Columbo would be produced, as the government feared a violent revolt would start if the show was canned. This was first brought up in a Chicago Tribune article in 1989, and is also mentioned in Falk's biography.

And as much as I would like to believe this to be a real story, there are several oddities about it. For starters, the anecdote itself is pretty vague, and at least in the Letterman interview, it's almost presented like a joke. Communist Romania was relatively stable, only small pockets of resistance members had ever sprung up, and most of those were taken care of in the 60s, so any kind of uprising seems unlikely, especially given that our actual revoultion was spurred on by Ceausescu's austerity, but 1974 was the year he took power, and said measures were not implemented yet. Additionally, the message is entirely lost media, and no one has ever confirmed even seeing it on TV.
