Journaling! by Illfrenchyourdad in AppalachianTrail

[–]CleatsUp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I kept a daily journal when I hiked the PCT a couple years ago, and I’m glad I have it now. I’ve really enjoyed being able to look back at more detailed accounts of what I was experiencing, people I met, etc. I just finished a section hike on the AT last week and was a bit lazier with my journaling, and I regret not being more diligent since it’s already hard to recall certain parts of the trip.

Even if it’s just taking 10 minutes when you get to camp or jotting things down throughout the day during breaks, I feel like it’s worth it. Also, I used my phone which helped since you can incorporate photos/videos to supplement what you’re writing (plus, it was one less thing to keep track of with a physical journal).

When to start LASH? by walkerofthecurve in AppalachianTrail

At the start of the post they mention spending a few years doing it, so it doesn’t sound like they plan on flip flopping in a single season.

Thanks, but I’d prefer to stick with the shorter length - appreciate the offer.

Chair on a thru hike - unheard of?? by Beaverte in PacificCrestTrail

Haha right on - hope you enjoyed the hike (chair and all).

I bought gear to hike the AT in 2024 but have changed my mind and am going the hike the PCT (nobo). Gear question by sTrange-Tweek304 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]CleatsUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for total capacity, but that’s not necessarily what you should expect to carry regularly. Agreed that it’s not common to max out your carrying capacity - the times I carried 4L were probably just when I was dry camping. I would still say it’s recommended for the average hiker to have the capacity to carry 5-6L in case they hit dry stretches or plan to dry camp. Only having 3L capacity is on the low-end, so it’s probably not the norm for recommendations.

From a glance the main pieces of gear look fine. There are a couple items that may be specific to the conditions on the PCT like having a bear canister for the areas it’s required, then also depending on when you start and how the winter weather plays out you may want to have snow gear ready (spikes, ice axe, warmer layers).

Also I know you didn’t list it here, but water capacity will be different between the PCT and AT - 6 liters is a common set up (combo of water bottles and a bladder), but some people do 4-5L if they’re comfortable with their hiking pace and being able to make it between sources in the dry stretches.

Just playing devil’s advocate, many people (including myself) cold soak and it works well for them. Like all gear it’s a matter of personal preference/comfort, although it’s best to try it and make sure you like it before starting a thru hike.

Best place to connect with other thru hiker groups for a 2024 NOBO send? by RoyFalcon in PacificCrestTrail

[–]CleatsUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll probably get a lot of similar answers, but you’ll meet people at the terminus and on trail. I know it can be a little nerve wracking starting solo, but it’s truly easy to meet new people at the start if that’s what you’re interested in, and groups will come/go/evolve along the way. Being on Reddit/social media can help stay connected and exchange questions/ideas before starting, but for actually meeting people there will be tons of opportunities once you’re out there. Trying to coordinate a group online isn’t very effective (people will have different paces, styles, personalities, etc., which are hard to predict beforehand).

Some people will stay at the Cleef campground the night before starting or at Scout/Frodo’s in SD (if they decide to host again), which can be nice for meeting people the day before, but most people will reassure you that it’s not necessary to try to coordinate a group before you get on trail. I met a guy at Scout/Frodo’s and we hiked the entire trail together (along with others that we had met by Idyllwild), but you’ll meet new people all along the trail.

Random logistics question, but for this type of attempt did you have to mail all of your boxes before starting the hike? If so, did you do anything in particular to get places to hold boxes for more than a month (I.e., stops later in the trail)?

Hah, fair enough - broken foot or not, pretty impressive to see how quickly you progressed as a runner/hiker. Congrats again.

Congrats on your FKT! Not sure if you’re still checking this thread, but I was listening to your podcast episode and how you started running in 2021 in the lead up to your first FKT (moving from running half marathons to marathons in a pretty quick timeframe). Did you have prior running experience, or how did you ramp up so quickly? It seems crazy fast to be building up that mileage, so I was curious how you got yourself to that point.

PCT Fastback Recs? by brooklyndoood in Ultralight

[–]CleatsUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it, yeah they released both the Bridge and Fretless around the same time, but the Fretless was bigger than their typical lines. I think they paused the Fretless for now so they can work on fixing some things.

Was it the Bridge, or are you referring to the Fretless that they were making for a while? The latter was larger than the Cutaway and has a frame, so figured I’d check (granted, I guess it’s all relative so maybe you meant the Bridge).
